*doesnt have the image

Iv never liked him... no doubt il get told off now by some David Bowie fans for saying he cant sing and just doesnt look like a pop star... SORRY TO DAVID BOWIE FANS :(

i can agree with some of the stuff you say about bowie his voice has never been his strongest point but he has done some bloody good albums ie diamond dogs , station to station , low but i cant stand his newer stuff and ive still not forgive him for the most cringy moment in rock history doing the lords prayer thing at the freddie tribute gig

elton john used to be really good in the 70s but for the life of me i dont understand why anyone would buy his stuff now elton was much better when he was in denial:)

Elton John has had some good songs out! (and thats coming from an 18 yr old!!)

Saying that, his songs are good, but his attitude sucks big time. I bet he's a right stuck up git!

And that's the very reason why the "stars" of X Factor and Pop Idol will never have a career spanning the amount of years that David Bowie has.

Music is not a "formula" and "image" that can be chosen. It can be about individuality & style.

Think of all the other people that wouldn't have won X Factor -Mick Jagger, Kurt Cobain, Bono, Rod Stewart, Shaun Ryder etc.... but a lot of them will have a longer and more worthwhile career than the likes of (even) Will Young. Greenday would never have won X Factor either. Which is a bonus for you, Kirst....!

I get sick of all the same R&B type voices, all looking the same - it's so bland. Gimmie something new and fresh everytime. Which is the answer to your original question MTheo - I can't understand why any of the bland R&B singers do so well. Specially that Akon bloke.

Bowie isn't my favourite and he is often overated but he's survived and re-invented homself so many times.

the most overated band in the history of music in my opinion have to be The Clash. They were good but they seem to top many polls for best album/band of all time.

Well, it's the same chords, over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and overover and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over.

Next Quo song: same 3 chords as the first over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over over and over and over and over and over and over.

Thats what baffles me.

although in their earlier years some of the stuff was more intricate. they just got stuck with being popular and decided to not spoil a winning formula...much like ac/dc did

I agree they should have packed it in after or even before Vitology (although it is worth it for Better Man and Nothingman) but Ten And Vs were excellent. Rearview Mirror is one of my favourite songs. I used to play Ten endlessly as well.

I agree with you there. I have to admit i was once into 50 cent... and my favourite song of his is probably 21 Questions. But now i dont listen to him anymore, even got rid of his album!

Although, Eminem is wicked, his rapping is different in some strange way. His videos are hillarious too!

Yeah totally agree, I think Eminem is great but there's hardly any other rappers I'd so much as cross the street to see.

Boroughgal is coming from exactly the same direction as me on this one, there's so many kids that have just had the same old bland R&B rammed down their throat that they don't even know the first thing of what music is about. I don't reckon the majority of them even like it, its just "what you listen to" and they've never heard anything different.

Wash your mouth out, young man!! How dare you!!!! I thought you had reasonably good taste in music till then! :D ;) :)

Seriously, the Clash were without question the greatest band of all time until the Manics came along, and for very much the same reasons.

Where do I start? Utterly brilliant live; the best line-up ever in rock for sheer charisma and rock 'n roll legend; integrity that was coming out of their ears (they truly did mean it man, and gave up on s***loads of cash over the years to stand by their principles); they loved their fans and always took the time to chat with fans after gigs - and famously often smuggled fans who couldn't afford tickets into gigs for free; they cared deeply about people and issues, and never forgot where they came from. They gave loyalty and inspired loyalty. So honest and earnest it hurt.

Oh yes - and they wrote brilliant songs in many different musical styles (sometimes years ahead of their time) with meaningful, heartfelt lyrics that inspired a generation.

They were all of them - Mick, Paul, Joe and Topper - thoroughly lovely blokes who stayed down to earth and didn't let it all go to their heads. Lovely people. The best.

And They Never Sold Out - and now never will. Joe RIP.

Ex public schoolboy singing about a single mum trying to get by in a grotty bedsit makes my blood boil.

In a small effort to upset Kirsty i would say greenday.

I use to really like them 10 years ago at the time of dookie. Nowadays they are just political drivel!

Sorry but American Idiot???? Geez, bring back the old punk music and try not to run for president!!

Same for Offspring. Another great band 10 years ago with Smash but sold out.

At least when Sex Pistols came back they were honest and said it was for the money!

You're spot on about Offspring (what a great album Smash was - might be worth getting the old tapes out of the loft for) but I have to say I think American Idiot is a bit of a return to form for greenday.

Watching Robbie try and make it in America was hilarious. Over here he gets by on the affection a lot of people seem to have for him for some reason. Over there he was exposed for what he is: a sub-standard crooner with a lot of very poor songs.

And anyone who owns anything by Dido wants shooting.

Or James f*cking Blunt. I'd rather listen to the Crazy Frog.

The one hugely successful band I have never understood the appeal of is The Rolling Stones. I can hardly name any of their songs and I only recognise a song as being theirs because of Jaggars God-awful singing. I actually heard a song on the radio at my dad’s the other week (can’t remember the name) and thought it was great, didn’t even realise it was Mick Jagger singing until my dad explained that that was how he sounded when he was singing properly rather than putting on his act. It sounded soooo much better!

On a more superficial note I have been amazed at Girls Aloud’s ability to still keep packing in the hits. What exactly makes them any different to any of the other throw-away acts that these talent shows come up with? Especially as they really are the worse of a bad bunch.

Also I never understood the whole Busted or McFly thing. Call me old-fashioned, but although boy bands were never the most musically talented, they did at least used to be good looking!!

Listening to post-'Word Gets Around' Stereophonics makes me want to cut out my liver using a serrated bread knife.

Oh, and Kasabian too. Music for people who aren't really sure if they like music at all, but are positive that what they do like is to jump up and down with weak lager in their hands whilst wearing retro Adidas tracksuit tops they paid £60 for, shouting inanities and bumping into their identikit friends.

The appeal of Van Morrison has always eluded me. I cannot see a great deal of merit in either his vocal style or his musical arrangements. Quite simply, I find his music dull and banal. Why then do most of my friends, and some members of my family idolise the man? It must be me. These are sensitive, intelligent, tasteful people and they are incredulous at my inability to appreciate their hero's music. Morrison is almost universally lauded as 'brilliant' in the music business too. Try as I might, I just cannot find anything there which makes me want to play his music more than once. Am I going about it the wrong way? Should I drink a bottle of Bushmills first?

got to disagree here. I liked dookie then bored with them for years but American Idiot is a real return to form. The song itself isn't amongst my favourites but as an album it is really good.

And most of what passes for pop music. And 50 Cent (or as I knew him about 36p) - it gets my goat when I say I'm a hip-hop fan and get "so do like Ja Rule?" Grrrrr

Kathy you are spot on about Roots Manuva. Had the pleasure of a freestyle with him at the Tuesday Club back in the day and hes a lovely gent to boot :D

got to disagree here. I liked dookie then bored with them for years but American Idiot is a real return to form. The song itself isn't amongst my favourites but as an album it is really good.

Well, life would be boring if we all agreed on everything!

I disagree with you I am sorry!!!! I was born in 1981 but I still appreciate David Bowie!!! I have done from a child! My parents both like him and I have liked SOME of his music not all of it, I must admit, but I like the majority and I also think he is interesting. He has a look that is interesting and not run of the mill barbie or ken just come out of the plastic mold that most famous people come out of. David Bowie, has acted too. He has appeared in a few things but I have to admit that Labyrinth has to be something I grew up with from a young age, and now own on DVD! (i don't care if that is sad!)

I am sorry, well no I am not!!! Everyone has the right to be different, and if you heard half of the "popstars" singing live these days (with exception to the contestants on X-Factor where they are shown up for not being able to sing at all let alone live) they can't sing at all!!!

But...everyone is intitled to their own opinion. And this is mine. :P

Hope you dont mind me saying so.

:P :hihi:

i would be one of those persons who suggests that bowie is well past his sell buy date i tend to think of his better stuff ie diamond dogs and station to station and low to his new stuff besides ive never forgive him for the lowest moment in rock history in 1992 at the freddie mercury tribute gig

We truly do not deserve to survive as a race.

timo, I'm with you about Van Morrison. Saw him at Glastonbury this year. What a load of dreary nonsense. Them were good though.
