View Full Version : What's The Best Gig You've Ever Been To?
Who? Where? When? What made it the best? etc etc...
I'd have to say:
Coldplay @ Weston Park, Stafford 2003
I was totally blown away by the performance, this has to be one of the tighest sets they have ever played!
Everything about the gig was incredible. I was with the missus, and "Yellow" is our song (so that obviously contributed to an amazing experience). You know when you go to see a band that are riding high on the crest of a wave and you build em' up so much that the gig can't possibly measure up to your expectations? Well it was better than I could have ever imagined.
What a night!!! I was on a high for weeks afterwards....
So what are everyone else's Best Ever Gigs????
CherryNicole 09-10-2005, 03:58 The Chili's last year were the best. They're my fav band and I've wanted to see them for ages, so that might be why.
Anthony did call us facists or something, but lets be honest, chicks on speed were a rubbish support :gag:
mr.blaze 09-10-2005, 08:15 Mine has to be seeing the Zen Hussies Shambala 04. I think they played from 4 in the afternoon to 12 at night or something like that.
slash's snakepit at the corporation about 3/4 years ago...the place went mental when a guns n roses song was played...and i got knocked to the floor and stepped all over....but what a gig.:D
Plain Talker 09-10-2005, 10:24 For me, the best one I ever went to just has to be "Terrorvision", doing an impromptu gig in the beer garden at a rock pub at the side of Cole Brothers, in Sheffield city centre, the summer of 1993, (the night before they played heavy metal fest at Don Valley Stadium with def leppard, metallica etc).
It was fantastic, I was able bodied, then, and moshed my heart out, standing on a beer crate (LOL) so I could see over the tall blokes blocking my view.
What a night! What an atmosphere!
ACE!

It was round the back of the Yorkshireman. I was there.
Plain Talker 09-10-2005, 11:22 that's the very one, slh. I could not for the life of me remember the name of the pub! lol
If you saw a little, plump blonde-haired woman, dressed like a hippy, standing on a beer crate, moshing, that was me! lol

One of the best gigs I've been to was a Meatloaf and Cher tribute thingy at the City Hall Ballroom about 2 years ago.. The woman who did Cher had won Stars in their eyes doing Cher the previous year and was almost better than the real Cher herself, and the bloke who did Meatloaf was also pretty good...

terrorvision are one of the best live acts EVER in my opinon...defo in my top 5...not in my top 5 fav bands...but such an amazing live act.
Kirsty_87 09-10-2005, 13:12 Iv been to two... Green Day in Milton Keynes (19th June) and McFly at Hallam Arena 21st September.
Green Day are the best!!! :)
ooooh difficult.
Seeing the Foo's at Reading in 94 which was their first gi in the UK (I think) was amazing. Had to be stopped 3 times due to pure chaos. We spent 3 hours establishing our postion at the front (through Echobelly, Moist, Whale) for my mate to be crowdsurfaced out of the tent after 1 song :P :P
also Pavement were amazing at Reading (although they did blow the speakers but the drum stick fight made up for it!) and seeing them at the Foundry as well
Rockerman 09-10-2005, 23:54 I seem to get to gigs a lot (maybe not as much as I used to these days)
So to pick one gig and count that as the best gig would be really difficult as each had their own merits
- but the best Live band i've seen (and the most times) is a Rock Band called Thunder
I just bought tickets to see them for the 19th time
They are constly great - I've never seen them do a bad show
I whole hearted recommend them to anyone who wants a great night out
Tubthump 10-10-2005, 00:52 My most memorable gig was seeing Radiohead support, and totally blow away, James at the Gloucester Leisure Centre in 1993. I was a fan of James at the time, and definitely not of Radiohead. After that night my opinions reversed themselves. It was just before The Bends came out, and it was very apparent that they were on the cusp of greatness.
Alejandro Escovedo at the Boardwalk - two years ago before he became seriously ill. An extraordinary musician and performer well worth investigation.
Greenback 10-10-2005, 09:46 Hawksley Workman at the Adelphi Club, Hull (incidentally the best venue in the universe ever as far as I'm concerned), back in 2000. It was magical. From the moment the man came on stage and played his first chord the audience went deadly silent.
Everyone was absolutely captivated by the best performance I've ever seen. It was funny, sad, heartfelt, raucous and totally spellbinding.
Hawksley's a true showman and it's a real pity he hasn't played in England for so long.
Slash's Snakepit at Corp was brilliant!
Best gig...hmm not sure but. Saw Slayer last year at London Astoria. Great night!!! Saw two songs by Slipsnot and had enough and walked back to the hotel!!
Got great hopes for Arch Enemy this December and just booked tickets for Chimaira at Corp, also in December!
December is a busy month. Seeing Cradle of Filth too. More out of curiosity really. Seen them supporting a few times so could be interesting!
Worst gig was Chili Peppers. Saw them a couple of years ago in Manchester. They only played songs off the latest album at the time. Which is ok if thats the only album you've ever heard.
Thats just my opinion!

They was better the year before IMO when they played in the MEN, I personally didnt think they was playing their best at that gig... the year before Flea and John were really ripping up some of their classic Bass vs Guitar solo battles and the whole arena was shaking it was awesome...
and Chicks on Speed werent that bad, just the wrong crowd, they certainly DIDN'T deserve booing off stage or having things thrown at them... if you dont like a band then fine, but they've taken their time to prepare to play and to come on stage, give artists some respect...
as for James Brown after them, wow ;)
Anyways, fav gig... hmm... dunno have to say Meatloaf last year was fantastic, puts on a great show... its more like a musical theatrical with acting and such, truely awesome... Deep Purple With Peter Frampton and Thunder as supports was also a fantastic gig :)
Cant pick a favourite, seen too many great artists/bands

It was truly amazing. The energy the fun and spontinaetyof it all. I'm sorry I was one of the tall blokes in your way.
I had never heard of them before that but after I saw them about 5 times.. Greak rock music which you could dance to.

I have seen thunder a few times too, I didn't know they were still going. A good hard working british blues rock band with a frontman with a voice with an amazing quality to it.

The RHCPs have gone down hill since the Blood Sugar album, one of the greatest rock albums of all time. The earlier albums were truly groundbreaking and full of energy. After Blood Sugar, they have turned into a housewives choice, ballard, boring band.
One of the greatest Gigs I ever saw was Jane's Addiction, the first time around in about 1987. At the Ledmill, the support didn't materialise, and I nearly went home, but they finally came on at midnight and played one of the most amazing gigs I ever saw.
I also used to love Faith No More. They played sheffield about 5 times, and I loved it. From out of nowhere is one of my favourite songs ever, but they went off a couple of albums later.

Was it the Manchester gig? I was there!
The Chilli's rocked.....but James Brown was in a league of his own!!

I certainly wasn't booing or throwing things at the stage, I found them funny more than anything else. Definatly wrong crowd, I think people just expected someone a bit better known and not so weird :D that's all. They did add something to the gig mind ;)
Aye liencam, manchester :headbang: suprised I didn't see you in the 60,000 people that were there!! ;)

I was sat at the back getting gradually more relaxed if you get my drift. :D
RE: Chicks on speed. They didn't do themselves any favours by lessing up to try and win the crowd over.

I was in a mosh pit at the front getting battered and bruised :D
Chicks on speed did have one song that was ok. Just think that after we'd been stood in the rain for a few hours and they came on, it was just a bit too crazy for some.
I personally model my dress sense on them :D

Sod your dress sense, just think of the fun you could have if you half modelled your sexuality on them.....
:hihi:
Agent Gypo 10-10-2005, 13:04 Some of these are dj sets but were still better than the vast majority of bands I've seen.
Squarepusher @ Leadmill, Sheffield 2004.
Fear Factory @ Rio's, Bradford 2001
Aphex Twin @ Carling festival, Leeds 2002
Radiohead @ The Apollo, Manchester 2003
Andy Jenkinson @ The Social, Sheffield 2005
Chris Liberator @ Corporation, Sheffield 2005
Captain Tinrib @ The Arches, Sheffield 2003
The Arcade Fire @ Leadmill, Sheffield 2005
Autechre @ The Showroom, Sheffield 2003
marinaparkes 10-10-2005, 13:26 oh my god i remember seeing lulu before i moved to aus in 74
Bisonic_Man 10-10-2005, 14:47 James Brown at V99.
Horrible, corporate nightmare of a festival but with an amazing line-up, culminating with James Brown on Sunday night. The entire crowd was chanting "James Brown! James Brown!" for about half an hour after the encore, unwilling to believe he wouldn't come back on again.
Also Radiohead when they played in the park in Oxford, round about the time Kid A came out, and even better at Glastonbury 2003. Sigur Ros at Glastonbury 2003. The White Stripes at Glastonbury this year.
The Pet Shop Boys, Glasto 2002. They looked ludicrously out of place, but that just made it better. The crowd stopped trying to be cool and just lapped it up.
New Order at Barry Noble's Roxy in the mid 80s, I jumped up and down so much I collapsed with exhaustion, I regained conciousness for the encore which was my fav song at the time and one they rarely played.

Thin Lizzy Sheffield city hall 1977.
Stood in a queue 6 hours in the snow for tickets.

I suppose many of the things that made it rubbish wouldn't show up on the bootleg: The awful support band, an all girl Japanese act. The lack of atmosphere - the lights seemed to remain on through the performance, giving you a great view of the red brick interior. A very ordinary rendition of the songs.
Maybe it was while I was there that I realised I didn't actually like Nirvana, but prefered Husker Du, Minutemen, Fugazi and Mudhoney type stuff.
I have to be honest, the first time I listened to it I thought it was an awful recording. But it's lost some of it's "awfulness" over the years. Never been a huge Nirvana fan myself to be truthful.
Phanerothyme 12-10-2005, 11:55 A few gigs stand out as completely untouchable.
Frank Zappa - Brighton International Centre in 87 (I think)
Lords of The New Church - Salisbury Arts Centre, 88
Chuck Berry - Portsmouth Guildhall 1990?
Kevin Ayers and the Wizards of Twiddly - The Lomax, Liverpool, 1994
The Tansads - The Lomax, 1994
The Egg - The New Adelphi, Hull, 1997
Motordude Zydeco - The New Adelphi, Hull
Fila Brazillia - The Tuesday Club. 2000?
Coldcut/ Kid Koala - The Tuesday Club. 2002?
Just a handfull that stick in my mind.
Rammstein - Prague December 2004
Ac/Dc + The Offspring and Megadeth at Milton Keynes bowl, about 4 years ago i think.
Paradise Lost - St Georges Hall Bradford 1995 i think.
Hayseed Dixie - Glastonbury Festival 2005
shefflasfema 12-10-2005, 14:28 The best gig I have ever been to has got to be Oasis in Manchester this July just gone.

Rammstein was great in Manchester
littleidea 12-10-2005, 18:10 Rammstein at Rock city a few year back were great, arenas just don't feel the same. Hard to pick a best ever gig but best this year is probably Dropkick Murphys at Manc academy. They had half the crowd on stage with them at the end, it was a classic.
The best gig I have ever been to has got to be Oasis in Manchester this July just gone
A few of my mates went, and the view was unanimous.... Would love to see em' but somethings always popped up!

Yeah they were great. I wasn't really a massive Oasis fan, wouldn't have gone if my mate hadn't have told me we were going :D But it was an amazing gig, although I did nearly get killed several times :D
NEKRO138 13-10-2005, 09:28 Bloodhound Gang, hands down. They've had to tone it down a bit now because no one would insure them.
They had swimming contests to the back of the gig, over the crowd.
They made a man eat 10 stone cold kebabs.
They made a man drink 24 cans of Dr Pepper in an hour.
They made a man eat two blocks of lard.
When the bloke didn't eat the kebabs, they told him to put a funnel down his pants, close his eyes and roll 2p down his nose into the funnel, and he could have $100.
Soon as he closed his eyes, they poured sour milk down the funnel and were sick down it too.
They were firebreathing off the end of the guitars. And the music was top!
NEKRO138 13-10-2005, 09:29 just seen the dropkick murphy's suggestion. Yes, they are class live. Playing Leadmill in December!
you'll all hate me for saying this but my favourite best ever was seeing Robbie at Knebworth :D

you have been to see robbie- \/\/ o \/\/!!!! ;)
you can really go off people you know
Best gig I ever went to was Pink Floyd Pulse (1994 I think) in cologne. Sound was amazing.
Seen Robbie Williams twice but I reckon the concert in Gelsenkirchen, Germany was the best. Skin did the support and she was amazing. Best support band I've ever seen!
Seen the Doves a couple of times and their sets are just amazing!!!
I went to see Oasis in Manchester in July, they were ok. Hope they'll be better in December at Millenium stadium (also featuring Foo Fighters - should be ace!!)
Was in the US a few years ago and managed to watch Supergrass (with The Coral supporting) at a small club in Atlanta. Only around 150 people there but the gig was superb.
Also, Oasis at Knebworth was pretty special!

I forgot to mention that I went to see Maximo Park in London in July too. Maximo Park arent that well known yet I don't think? I got into them through a friend and absolutely love them now! Come on Maximo Park get abit more well known!!!! :headbang:
metalman 14-10-2005, 21:55 One of the best I ever went to was a jazz-rock band called Turning Point at the Student's Union in Bristol about 25 years ago. They had Jeff Clyne on bass and Brian Miller on keyboards (two of the original members of Isotope), an excellent sax player, drummer, and Pepe Lemer on vocals. They started at I think it was 7 o'clock on the dot, and a grand total of about 30 people turned up. About 9-ish they had an interval, during which Miller bought me a drink, and then they carried on. At midnight they were still going when the security guard came round to say they had to finish because they wanted to close the Union. And musically they were superb; I bought both their albums on the strength of that gig. I didn't want it to end either.
More recently, prog-rockers Spock's Beard at the Oakwood Centre in Rotherham a few years ago. This was their first gig in the UK and I don't know whether they knew they were coming to play at a school after filling much bigger venues all round Europe, but they certainly gave it everything.
cptwhite 15-10-2005, 08:49 Mew @ Leadmill 16 Septemeber 2005 was definately up there as one of my favs:
They had massive projector with loads of trippy imagery in time to the music it was absolutely brilliant and very original, I managed to capture a few short video clips with my digicam:

the_rudeboy 20-10-2005, 22:13 Tough one....
The Specials at Steeleys in 1980 (this was first gig I ever went to)
or
Chili Peppers at Hyde Park in 2004, supported by the Godfather.
franc1987 20-10-2005, 22:30 I cant choose between
Slade- Rock and Blues Bike Rally 04
REM- Hyde Park July 05
Slade was good because i was off my head and they sang "here it is merry christmas" on one of the hottest days of the year in santa suits and everyone sang along
REM- a week after the london bombings (had to be rescheduled from the 9th to the 16th) London was still in shock and it was almost eery, hard to explain but as soon as we got into Hyde Park that "london feeling" was back and REM played a brilliant set. It was great!
angelgirluk 28-05-2006, 17:22 Gawd, been to a few but I think Madonna in 2004 was amazing and Take That's comeback gig the other week was amazing too - but I have seen so many good gigs.. ! x
EdnaKrabappe 28-05-2006, 18:33 Stereophonics supported by Ash and the Black Crowes at Donnington in 2001. They did a set starting from the beginning to the current stuff. I went with some friends who were as passionate about them as i was and my boyfriend at the time. We had such a laugh, it was a really sunny day, lots of beer. Plus they played my favourites (tshirt suntan, same size feet) which at every gig i've been to of theirs since they haven't (too much material now!)
kylie - dont care what any one says.
for pure effort & a 3 hour solo performance Chris de Burgh, although i went under duress in the first place.
weenireeni 28-05-2006, 18:53 i reckon live 8 last year has to be the best for me!
individual artist, probably the zutons at the octagon a few weeks ago
and probably the real favourite that i wont admit to: boyzone 1996 at notts arena
:D
Chris_Sleeps 29-05-2006, 15:45 I saw Black Rebel Motorcycle Club play a 2 1/2 hour set at Birmingham Irish Centre. Its weird how a band go improve but lose a lot of their following, and there were about 200 people at this gig. They were absolutely amazing.
I saw Mogwai at Glastonbury aswell in ... 2003 i think. I didn't think it was going to be good but it was one of those moments where you can just lay down in the grass and listen. Lovely music.
I have a few but topping my list at the moment is Me First and the Gimmie Gimmie's in Nottingham a couple of weeks ago! I'd waited ages for the American band to come over here and it was well worth the wait!!!
heartshaped1 31-05-2006, 09:44 I agree with previous posters about Iron Maiden Donnington Monsters of Rock 1988, also the last two visits to the Octagon by the Doves were superb, as was FatBoySlim at the Octagon a couple of years ago.
Afraid I'm still stuck in a timewarp - best gig - Mega City Four at Hallam Poly as was, or PWEI at the Octagon in 1993. :)
mr.blaze 31-05-2006, 11:29 The Zen Hussies (Shambala 04)
They were off the hook :)
My most memorable gigs so far have been..
* Hole @ Octagon (Live Through This era)
* The Shins @ Rock City (May 2006)
* REM @ Glastonbury (forget which year, 2004 maybe?)
* CUD @ Derby Wherehouse (sometime around 1992 probably)
* Arctic Monkeys @ Octagon
I've seen so many live gigs over the years I've forgotten who I've seen.. especially when it comes to the stuff I've seen during the last 8 or 9 glastonbury festivals..
I think Madonna's Confessions Tour will be added to this list in August - if the bootlegs of the US leg of the tour are anything to go by.. especially since I'm going to be within touching distance of her on the catwalk.
StarSparkle 31-05-2006, 12:54 Afraid I'm still stuck in a timewarp - best gig - Mega City Four at Hallam Poly as was

Kid 606 @ Showroom bar 2003
Gescom/Autechre @ Showroom bar 2002 (I think)
Peaches @ Leeds festival 2002
Metallica @ Milton Keynes Bowl 1999
Fear Factory @ Bradford Rio 1999
Pitchshifter @ Ozzfest 1998, Leadmill 2001
The Arcade Fire @ Leadmill 2005
Ceephax Acid Krew @ Matilda Social 2005
scarey girl 31-05-2006, 14:15 Rammstein @ Newcastle, July 2005
I have never sweated so much in my entire life, but I was at the front so it was so worth it! You could really feel the flames on your face never mind see the whites of their eyes!! The most amazing band to see live, ever. Period.
And if you don't know who/what I am talking about then check out the band playing at the start of the film xXx, (where the agent gets followed into a club and then gets killed) - that's them. And yes, they play like that live, every time! :headbang:
Oh, and Slipknot were pretty damn good at Download last year too. Going again this year, well next week in fact, and for the whole weekend, so I think I may well have a new top 10 very soon - YAY!!! But R+ will always be at the top for me.
EDIT: How on earth I forgot this gig I will never know!
Depeche Mode @ Manchester, March 2006.
These guys may have been around the block a few times now but boy can they still do it! The whole performance, from beginning to end was just brilliant. The singing was awesome, the playing was awesome, the set list was awesome, the crowd interaction was perfect. All in all an amazing gig!
Seen Robbie Williams twice but I reckon the concert in Gelsenkirchen, Germany was the best. Skin did the support and she was amazing. Best support band I've ever seen!
Have seen skin few times live and she is always amazing and full of energy and a very sexy lady
I love gigs (my better half says I spend far too much money on them!!!)
Don’t think I could ever have a favourite but
Erykah Badu was amazing at Manchester Apollo in 2003
I saw Paul Weller at Don Valley in I think 1998? I have never been a fan but he was very good, great atmosphere even thought it rained
Sorry but Robbie at Knebworth was amazing
Kaiser Chiefs in Leeds few weeks ago were pretty good, great crowd too.
Went to see Athlete around the time Wires came out without really knowing who they were and loved them and I am a fan now
Really enjoyed Culture Club, ABC and Human League around 1999 at the Arena but probably because it took me back to the 80’s and I was a little drunk!!!
Got a few booked this year but going to see Boy Voyeur at the Leadmill on Saturday, should be a good one

shells2909 02-06-2006, 18:04 I'd have to say the best gig i've ever been to was the Manic Street Preachers at Hallam fm arena bout 8 years ago, they were supported by Catatonia. James Dean Bradfield's voice was unbelievable - great show:thumbsup:
Seen hundreds of bands some good and some bad. But the best gig has to be Jellyfish at Newcastle Riverside 1990 (alas gone now). Psychedelic four part vocal harmonies, wild floral flares and the lead singer was the drummer.
Also, first gig i ever saw was Motorhead at Newcastle City Hall 1982. I was 13 years old and went with my (younger) brother! We still have a soft spot for Lemmy and co.
Funky_Gibbon 09-11-2006, 19:53 I've seen quite a few gigs by some great bands but the one I remember most fondly is Catatonia at the Octagon (was 1998 or 1999 I think - damn this aging brain!). It was the first gig I went to with some good friends from Uni and both me and my best friend were somewhat in love with Cerys Matthews. We arrived fairly early so we got to stand right at the front which, as we were both 6 foot tall, probably didn't impress the girls stood behind us. The gig itself was superb and it was one of the earliest performances of songs from their Equally Cursed And Bless album so it was the first time we'd heard those songs. They played International Velvet and afterwards Cerys said that she didn't realise there were so many Welsh people in Sheffield (as we'd all been singing along to 'I thank the Lord I'm Welsh') which started off a mass chant of 'Yorkshire! Yorkshire!'. Seeing a few gray haired women join in with jumping about when they played Storm The Palace was hilarious.
I also fondly remember going to a small Toby Jepson (formerly a member of Little Angels) gig in Liverpool with my best mate on a cold Sunday morning in December a few years ago (2001 I think). My mate had become friends with Toby after bumping into him in Scarborough and cheekily asking Toby if he could have any old demo recordings of Little Angels that Toby had. We set off early to help the band set up for their gig later that evening although we only knew the name of the club and the area of Liverpool it was in.
After driving in circles for about an hour and a half we found the club hidden in a side street, helped the band carry their instruments into the club then sat around for about 3 hours while the band set themselves up for the gig. I got to listen to the drummer, bass guitar and lead guitar players improvising an amazing instrumental piece that went on for about 30 minutes. The gig itself was pretty entertaining with about 80 people crammed into a small club. Towards the end of the gig Toby motioned for one of the blokes in the crowd to climb onto the stage with him (which had been prearranged as the bloke was from his fan club). Unfortunately there were two very drunk women standing next to this bloke and both of them climbed over the barrier and started dancing on the stage next to Toby, who had to finish the song whilst being groped by these two ladies.

oooh... i was there too (my 3rd or 4th time at a catatonia concert...). i am also somewhat still in love with her :) went to see her on her solo tour at the leadmill a few weeks ago and she was stunning then. most people i tell this to seem to look at me funny. we are the chosen ones, i think :)
(friday 12th march, 1999 by the way...)

Ah thanks for giving me the date. Hope I didn't block your view. :D
The last time I saw her was at Manchester University on her first solo tour which was about 2 years ago I think. She was 8 and a half months pregnant at the time and looked like she could go into labour at any second! I also got to see her with Catatonia not long before they split up at a Unicef charity gig at Manchester Evening News Arena where she belted out Do You Believe In Me which was fantastic.
sexkitten 10-11-2006, 09:38 Velvet Revolver at the Apollo Manchester........Slash is God
Thought I'd posted in this thread....oh well.
Best festival/day would be Monsters Of Rock 1995 - Metallica, Slayer, Machine Head, White Zombie....
Just for sheer exuberance would go to Terrorvision at Rock City last year...Tony Wright was dancing around the whole 2 hours and never once got tired!
Any Opeth gig is awesome :)
Then far too many, Deftones @ Rock City, Mastodon @ Corp, Mad Capsule Markets @ Corp...
Muse at Leeds Festival this year.
Although I was at the barrier absolutely squished and soaked in rain/sweat/beer and probably **** I didn't care- nothing was going to spoil that night.
At least when I see them in Sheffield next week there's no chance of rain :hihi:
thecyclist 12-11-2006, 08:51 Back in the late seventies I went to see Supertramp at the city Hall. Supporting them was Joan Armatrading who was brilliant. On the same night a relatively new band who had had their first hit were booked to play the crucible. They timed their concert to start after Supertramp had finished theirs. When supertramp finished me and my mate along with most of the people in the stalls in the city hall ran down to the crucible at around 11.00pm to see the newish band. They were called Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynot on guitar and lead. The supertramp set was the Crime of the Century tour and it was the first time I had seen huge video screens used, which should a picture of the album cover which started off as a dot and got bigger and bigger as the band played Dreamer. Joan Armatrading was brilliant and sang "Give me Love". And Thin Lizzy sang "The boys are back in Town".
A brilliant night that was never repeated.
I saw many groups at the City Hall. Lynyrd Skynyrd several times, the original line up. Santan, John Mcluaghlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Argent, Tangarine dream, Sabbath and Rick Wakeman loads more. They were great times and I wish I had appreciated them more at the time, but I guess that comes with age.
cant really say whats the best gig ive been to as i been to so many, but all my best experiences have been down at The Boardwalk on Snigg Hill
okka north 12-11-2006, 16:35 Guns 'n' Roses Melbourne many years ago. It was awesome.
Hmmm this is a tough one because I go to loads of gigs............ now I'm not really a big fan of their music but the best gig purely based on live performance was Bon Jovi earlier this year closely followed by the Toxic Twins Towers Ball back in 1999 which included Aerosmith (Slightly biased as they are my favourite band of all time) Lenny Kravitz, The Stereophonics, Black Crowes & Three Colours Red!
Paul Rodgers too was fantastic and I've loved Free since i was a kid!
Slash's Snakepit at Corp was amazing too!
And I have to admit this, although I am mainly into Rock ~ I went to see Pink and she puts on a very good live show!
flufftier 14-11-2006, 19:12 I went to live 8 last year. It was amazing. A really long day but the atmosphere was so good.
nightstorm 12-01-2007, 19:04 Nightstorm here, Best gig i went to is the Chatteris in Cambridge its awsome.
viennafamous 30-01-2007, 11:46 GONZALES at the Barfly (around 2001) was a sensation! He seemed 10 feet tall and he walked around the crowd. I remember the crowd open mouthed at his room filling presence...More costume changes than the Oscars and more 'tude than an ASBO granny!
Anyone else there??
the rolling stones at don valley, fantastic!
ub40 in 94 did a all day reggae gig a number of well known reggae singers there but gotta say bitty mcclean was the best cool day n night :P

A fantastic magical day to cherish for life, everything was fantastic!
CHAIRBOY 01-04-2007, 10:02 Classical music fan but in July 2005, took my wife to Newmarket racecourse to see Ronan Keating on a Friday evening after racing. Paid £200 for a return taxi but it was a wonderfully warm night, terrific atmosphere and setting, and truly memorable. I wouldn't do it again because it couldn't surpass that evening.
Little_Alex 01-04-2007, 10:49 The Rolling Stones in '95 at Don Valley
REM at Glastonbury
David Bowie at Maine road Glass spider tour
U2 at Roundhay park
The Stone roses at Manchester Apollo
Kasabian at the Leadmill '04
Plus loads of others at the V and Glastonbury festivals
:)
Chilli Peppers last year was awesome but just pipped at the post by Public Enemy at the plug I was in pure heaven.
Little Man Tate at Boardwalk Xmas party on 22nd December! Absolutley great night. I've seen bands that are better musically but as far as gigs go this was so much fun.
dfgenius 02-04-2007, 14:57 I saw Kasabian in Amsterdam 4 weeks ago, at the Paradiso. They are playing stadiums etc. here, but the Paradiso used to be a church and holds about 1000 people. They were on top form and dead chuffed to be playing such a great small venue.
Sweetcheeks 02-04-2007, 21:04 Best 2 gigs for me were Caterwaul at the Polytechnic circa 89 and Dreams So Real, who played to around 25 people at The Limit. Both bands blew away some of the massive names I saw in the 60`s and 70`s.
EdnaKrabappe 03-04-2007, 13:16 Housemartins/Proclaimers at Octagon circa September 1985/86 ish

That was my first gig ever! Fond memories of losing shoes. Sat 4th October 1986 - I always thought I was loads younger than that! Won 1-0 according to Heaton.
Some of these are dj sets but were still better than the vast majority of bands I've seen.
Squarepusher @ Leadmill, Sheffield 2004.
Fear Factory @ Rio's, Bradford 2001
Aphex Twin @ Carling festival, Leeds 2002
Radiohead @ The Apollo, Manchester 2003
Andy Jenkinson @ The Social, Sheffield 2005
Autechre @ The Showroom, Sheffield 2003
Definitely enjoyed seeing Aphex live, he literally just pressed a button & cleared off & Autechre, I enjoyed.
The best things I've heard recently....
Public Enemy- Nottingham Rock City (2004/5ish)
Surgeon- Glade Festival (July 06)
but my fave....
Luke Vibert- Glade Festival (July 06)
Will probably go back to Glade ths year
cressida 07-04-2007, 11:25 can't think of anything really spectacular, saw Madness and the Spice Girls at the Manchester Arena, my son went to the Band Aid concert last year, Madonna was there, Pink Floyd and the Who, got me a keyring and a very chunky programme
ChrisTodd 07-04-2007, 16:04 Prince in London in 1985 and 1987 I think were both excellent.
_Kirsty_ 07-04-2007, 16:08 Green Day- Milton Keynes Superbowl on 19th June 2005.
Support acts: Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday & Hard-Fi.
Probably the hottest day in 2005 (weatherwise). Loads of blokes with their tops off jumping around in the mosh pit. I loved it.
Atmosphere: Brilliant
Performance: Out of this world
Iv got it on DVD now, and EVERYTIME I watch it I cry when he sings Wake Me Up When September Ends.
In my opinion, nothing can compair to that day. The best day of my life and most certainly one I will NEVER forget.
The Darkness at the Apollo in Manchester. I had the Man-Flu on the day but was determined to go. Needles to say they blew the Man-Flu right out of me.

Prodigy at Creamfields 2006 where amazing! the energy, vibe, the entertainment was 100% annie mac was good too
prince - lovesexy tour 1988, my 1st prince gig and utterly amazing none of the hundreds of bands i've seen since have come close
I agree with previous posters about Iron Maiden Donnington Monsters of Rock 1988, also the last two visits to the Octagon by the Doves were superb, as was FatBoySlim at the Octagon a couple of years ago.
Afraid I'm still stuck in a timewarp - best gig - Mega City Four at Hallam Poly as was, or PWEI at the Octagon in 1993. :)
I was at that Mega City Four gig and loved it. Not sure it was my best gig of all time, but a comment made by the band about changing the world one mind at a time stuck with me and has probably done more than anything else to set my course through life in the last decade for me.
It was an idea that took root, and took a few years to germinate, but is now something that is very important to me.
Thanks guys! :)

You mean the first gig Manic Street Preachers played in Sheffield without Richey?
If so, I was at that one too. It was the last MSP gig I've ever been to - it broke my heart.
The boot boys had taken over from the genuine Manics fans who loved the band through thick and thin from 1991, roaring along to "we just wanna get drunk" in a way that would have made Richey shudder.
And I found I couldn't bear to watch them up there on stage without Richey - there was a great, gaping black hole where he should have been, and they simply weren't the same band anymore.
Same gig, very different experiences.

roxette @ sheffield arena 91 or 92 & then in 94
i went to the 92 one i was superised how rocky they where a exellent concert:)
been to hundreds of gigs but a few whats stand out are

The Specials at Steeleys in 1980 (this was first gig I ever went to)
or
Chili Peppers at Hyde Park in 2004, supported by the Godfather.
Chilli peppers at hyde park my best too, such a memorable day sitting in the sunshine in the park drinking overpriced lager and not caring for once and chillis playing into sunset was awesome, then watching all the traffic come to a standstill as the roads were overun by fans and dashing through the streets to get the last train back to my mates place in aylsbury for last orders, sweet.
Love the manics too, amazing live, and to show i have broad tastes i tip my hat to neil diamond birmingham nec 1997, went with girlfriend at the time and her parents but was pleasantly suprised.

Sadly not - I've not been to a gig for AGES.
Although I would have gone to see the Only Ones recently if only they'd played Sheffield, and am very, VERY tempted to go see the Arctic Monkeys if I could ever get a ticket :)

I haven't seen anyone for along time either. I tend to see DJ's more than anything now. Haven't heard any bands for a while that have got me excited.
boutiquechoc 07-08-2007, 15:23 My best gig out of the tonnes I have been to has to be either The Roots or Erykah badu, she was awesome!!!!!!!! I'd say anyone who likes this genre to check either of those two out as the live music is 100% fab! I will be attending the next Roots gig in MCR this autumn and can't wait :hihi:
The boot boys had taken over from the genuine Manics fans who loved the band through thick and thin from 1991, roaring along to "we just wanna get drunk" in a way that would have made Richey shudder.
To be fair, the boot boys (and I mean national front types!) were there before Richy left. I can remember them throwing their weight around at a Manics gig at the Octagon. Can't remember the year, but Richy was still with them.
Best gig I've been too was probably Pavement at Manchester. They were really in the zone with even Malkmus's typically fragile live voice keeping up. Which was a revelation because I saw them the previous day when they played L**ds and they were bloomin' awful!
I think the best one I've been to was when I took my dad to see Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music at the Arena a few years ago, I left that place in awe
Rammstein @Nottingham
Rammstein @ NEC
Chris Rea @ Sheffield Arena
Killers @ Sheffield Arena
Bon Jovi @ City of Manchester
Chilis @ Don Valley Stadium
Probably a few more when I think about it I have been very lucky.
Dragonforce @ Octogen (very good fun)
Another three Best Gigs to add to my previous post...
The Shins @ Manchester Academy (March 07)
I was really looking forward to hearing the new stuff live and it sounded amazing :D
Madonna @ Wembley (almost a year ago today!)
I got a place on the barrier of the catwalk stage and at the end of the show she was stood two foot away singing right at me, kind of weird to see someone you've admired since you were 11 in the flesh for the 1st time! She looked radiantly beautiful close up. Well worth the extortionate ticket price!
Arctic Monkeys @ LCCC (Sat 28th July 07)
Decided to brave the mosh pit and got squashed and covered in unidentified liquids thrown from the back but it was well worth it for the amazing atmosphere and perfect view. They played a perfect set and I got noticed by Alex who asked if I was comfortable squished up against the barrier

Oh no, not in the same way at all back then. I was at that gig at the Octagon as well, and yeah, there were a few idiots obviously p***** out of their 'minds' throwing their weight about as you say - I got bashed into by one of them. But there was only a handful of them, and they were vastly outnumbered by the proper Manics fans with our feather boas and eyeliner! :)
It was "Design for Life" with its 'we just want to get drunk' that really pulled the boot boys in. I was really distressed at how many of them there were at the City Hall gig - Richey would have been completely appalled. I saw near-anorexic girls with their feather boas go flying when the neanderthals charged forward. And these were girls who would have followed the Manics since 1991, going to all their gigs round the country. It was just horrible to see, the change.
Those blokes would have beaten Richey and Nick to a pulp given half a chance in previous years. Absolutely sickening.

johnbradley 07-08-2007, 20:30 best gig?
it was probably seeing tommy emmanuel in the city hall about 4 or 5 years ago...absolute genius on the guitar...that was probably the best gig in terms of hearing/seeing everything, atmosphere and delightful guitar playing.
Public Enemy in 1998 was cool, Roni Size in 1997 @ alexander palace was pretty mental too...
Ivor&Mel 07-08-2007, 21:39 Most unexpected best gig was going to see Free and finding they hadn't turned up; so we had to pay just 3/- to see the act they'd roped in as substitutes: an unknown band called King Crimson...
But so many others... Every gig of The Nice was phenomenal... Mungo Jerry at the Hollywood Festival (nr Stoke, not LA :P) in 1970... Cream playing in some small place in N London... Yardbirds in Scunthorpe Drill Hall...
Paul Mccartney at Wembley a few years ago.
Siouxsie & the Banshees at the City hall, mid 80's
Both superb gigs.
FlowerdUp89 08-08-2007, 11:40 Pendulum at Sheffield!! Speaks for it's self really! It was absoloutly AMAZING!! Can't remember all of it in order, but I was kinda deaf the next day and had a hugh comedown - So it was good :)

WayneBetts 16-08-2007, 22:00 Motley Crue at Download 2007.
Velvet revolver also at Download 2007.
Seen Metallica at Earls Court, and Iron Maiden at Sheffield Arena.
All were good gigs but none of them can touch the Crue. :D
FlowerdUp89 17-08-2007, 07:39 Motley crue were better than Metallica!? Wow!
I'd love to see Metallica play live
The Buzzcocks in 1978 blew my mind because I was a huge fan, although I think in retrospect they were a bit ropey musically. I saw the Rich Kids a week before they split up and they were fantastic, although visibly hating each other.
I saw the Jesus and Mary Chain in 1998 and it would go down as my greatest ever gig. Genuinely stunning, in the sense that coming out of it I just had a feeling of my brain being cleared about thinking or worrying about anything. They only did 45 minutes but finished with "Vengeance" and after that one you knew there was just nothing that could follow it.
The most suprising one, was when I saw Bill Haley's Comets about 7 years ago. I had gone to see the Belfast rockabilly band the Sabrejets rather than specifically to see the Comets (who even at their prime get the reputation of being tame compared to say, Eddie Cochran or Gene Vincent). They came on in matching tartan waistcoats and I thought that it could be a bit sad. The drummer was 78, the lead guitarist 79. They then proceeded (metaphorically) to rip the place apart. The energy, the drive, was like watching 18 year old punks going ballistic, songs such as "Eat Your Heart Out Annie" were delivered with sheer venom, and the bass player even climbed up his double bass and played it from there!
StarSparkle 17-08-2007, 13:19 The Buzzcocks in 1978 blew my mind because I was a huge fan, although I think in retrospect they were a bit ropey musically.

The Buzzcocks gigs I went to were all WILD!! Some of the roughest gigs I've ever been to - the Sham 69 and Clash gigs I went to were gentle in comparison!

funkychick 19-08-2007, 17:31 The best gigs I have been too are Muse nov 06, we are scientists oct 06, and Interpol 04&05.
Powerage 19-08-2007, 18:48 Most unexpected best gig was going to see Free and finding they hadn't turned up; so we had to pay just 3/- to see the act they'd roped in as substitutes: an unknown band called King Crimson...
But so many others... Every gig of The Nice was phenomenal... Mungo Jerry at the Hollywood Festival (nr Stoke, not LA :P) in 1970... Cream playing in some small place in N London... Yardbirds in Scunthorpe Drill Hall...
Your so lucky wish I could have got to see King Crimson I love that band.
My best gigs are Led Zeppelin Knebworth 1979
Black Sabbath Birmingham NEC Xmas 1999
Peter Frampton Shepherds Bush Empire 2005
Roger Waters Earls Court in May
I have been to loads of great gigs but these stand out for me personally.
Australian Pink Floyd at Sheffield Arena WOW

Scratch Perverts are fantastic!!!!
Not too sure about Andy C nowadays: he cheats a lot as he presses most of the tunes to the same speed!!!! But one of my all time faves is 'roll on' so I do give him massive respect for that!!
Sounds like it'll be good! Enjoy it as I know you will :hihi:
Zozoyoyodede 01-03-2009, 21:07 i really enjoyed Give It A Name 08 at the Sheffield Arena even though i couldn't really see the second stage. Craine at the Sherwood Pub was good as the band went round talking to everyone before the show (Can't wait to see them at the O2 Academy April 3rd)
But the best was We Are The Ocean supported by The Urgency and Deaf Havana i didnt get home until midnight because me and my friend got chatting to some of the band members. :D
perplexed 02-03-2009, 16:01 Queen, Wembley stadium, 1986. :)
Never been equalled.
Other fantastic gigs:
Fleetwood Mac (1989 I think...)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (In Sheffield a couple of years back)
Heart (Mid 1980's I forget when)
Crap gig = Beautiful South, Crystal Palace about 8 or 10 years ago. They couldn't be arZed and it showed...)
Probably the last Smashing Pumpkins gig at Wembley (before they got back together) Must have been about five or six years ago now, but they basically played every good song they've ever written.
I also thought the last ever Bison gig at Plug was ridiculously good.
U2 Zoo Tv tour at the Arena. Queued all night for tickets
xEllieBellie 03-03-2009, 18:15 Disturbed @ Manchester!
irenewilde 03-03-2009, 21:57 Queen, Wembley stadium, 1986. :)
Never been equalled.
Absolutely. One of my best was the first time I saw them in Newcastle in 1974. Bohemian Rhapsody didn't even exist.
Heart (Mid 1980's I forget when)
Saw them supporting Queen at Milton Keynes in '82 and twice at Wembley Arena in '88. Absolutely superb every time.
More brilliant shows:
Def Leppard Don Valley Stadium '93 and Wapentake '95
Muse Sheffield Arena Nov '06
Bruce Springsteen Wembley Stadium 4th July 1985
Sensational Alex Harvey Band Newcastle '75
Hoping to add Mott the Hoople to this list in October!
Forgot to add the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in April 1992!
Lady Star 10-04-2009, 00:46 Morrissey, Christmas 2006 at GMex... Absolutely amazing!!! White Stripes at Empress Ballroom Blackpool had been my best ever up until that point...
