mistyraven 08-10-2005, 21:17 got a six month puppy, and she has been really ill for two day,s. took her to the vet. and they told me she may have parvo... I am very upset due to the fact that she has had all her needle,s... I have to give her water every hour but she look,s really ill. I am scared. in case anything happen,s and I am alone.. well not alone I have a little one in bed.. but what do I tell her if the pup don,t make it through the night... feel very scared ... my daughter will be heartbroke.
Tell them the truth..if not they can see right through it :)
Plain Talker 08-10-2005, 21:21 The truth is generally best....
You have to pitch it at the age of the child though.

Fishpole 08-10-2005, 21:31 I hope your pup pulls through. In the unfortunate event that the worst happens, I'd explain the loss as best I could. Its a part of life that many people shield their children from but honesty prepares them for the tough life ahead. I hope it doesn't come to that (everything crossed for puppy).
GothicCharm 08-10-2005, 21:37 Hope your pup pulls through. Tell her the truth, if my parents ever lied about anything like that I'd be even more heartbroken
Oh I really hope your puppy pulls through, this must be so difficult for you.
Did you vet offer any other advice? When my pup was about 6 months old he was ill too, my vet saw him everyday and gave us some rehydration sachets to mix with water to make sure he didn't become dehydrated.
I agree with everyone else about what to tell your child. Obviously it depends on the age of your child as to how you explain things to them. Your child already knows the puppy is ill?
Children are amazingly resiliant and can accept the truth sometimes easier than an untruth, especially if an untruth cannot be fully explained.
I really hope you have something good to tell your child in the morning and over the coming days, got everything crossed for you.
Yeah, hope the little Pup makes it.. If not, it's always best to tell the kid the truth, they might be upset in the short term but in the long term they'll thank you for being honest with them.
I think explaining death (of animals or people) is very hard to smaller children who have no concept of dying. A neighbour's little girl, a couple of weeks after burying their cat, asked her mum if the cat was still dead and when they could dig him up again. Everybody else just cried, but she just wasn't old enough to understand the concept of death and death being permanent.
I think that it will be hard to explain a concept when they just aren't old enough to grasp it, and it may take a number of repeats but you can't lie to them, even if you are doing it to be kind to them.
I'm crossing everything that your puppy has the strength to pull through this- one of my cats was similarly ill as a very small kitten, and is now 11 years old.
UnkleBob 08-10-2005, 23:22 I love dogs, keep us informed, please..

Any more news yet?
Aw Mistyraven, I'm so pleased your puppy made it through ok. It sounds like it was a hellish night for you though.
I hope that with plenty of TLC he'll keep getting better and better
Sandra1961 09-10-2005, 20:09 How old is your child?
If there really young, then say something like the puppy is wanted by the angels up above lol, sounds sweet :)
If there older then about 5, just simply tell them the truth, but say it the best way possible, cos kids get very upset at things like this...
hi im sorry about your puppy, but im glad it made it through the night,my dog had parvo after all injections,a friend told me to give him tea loads of,he said it flushed it out ,i tried it and it worked, good luck :) please tell your child the truth ,its best
