View Full Version : Would you - or wouldn't you?

I've just got back from Specsavers in Meadowhall, where I had a nice new pair of glasses made. I only needed to pay for the frame as they cut my old lenses down to size and fit them in.

The thing is this - I left my old glasses with them and went looking around for an hour, when I got back - the lady went and fetched them and I tried them on and they were spot on.

She walked off saying goodbye and went back to her desk - assuming I'd paid for them, I hadn't!. The frame was worth £100.

Now, they didn't have any of my details as it was just a re-fit and would probably have never known if I'd walked out as I saw her throw the tray reciept in the bin.

I went over to the main desk and the same lady was there, I told her I'd like to pay for them - she seemed embarrased and fished the reciept out of the bin and thanked me!

Now - what would you have done?.....

I would have walked out - if they haven't got the wherewithall to make sure you've paid it's their problem not yours!

I was sort of kicking myself afterwards and thought that - it's their fault at the end of the day, for not knowing. But, they could have cashed up that night and realised - and if they'd checked their cctv footage, I'd be on it.

So, I suppose I did the right thing.

No doubt you did the right thing Lestat, it's very admirable that you did go back. I just don't have the moral strength you clearly do!

I doubt however that they would have gone to the length of checking CCTV.

Wouldn't have lived with the conscience if I'd walked out. It would have ended really badly with me going back in days/weeks down the line, having built myself up to a snotty crying guilt monster, and throwing myself on their mercy if they promise to just take my money and not call the police and throw me in (moral) jail.

But that's just me.

it would be just as easy to mug an old lady of £100, but that's not right either!

Id have done what you to Lestat, otherwise I would have felt really guilty if Id have gone without paying... infact, i need a trip to the opticians....

Your comparing apples and oranges tho. Morality isn't black and white - stealing £100 from an old lady and walking out of specsavers cos the shop assistant didn't ask for the cash are two very different things.

Well done mate - I dont think its a question of if you should have paid for them or not; you should have regardless of how dopey the assistant might be. well done

I'd have paid for them. To not do so would have made me a thief. I also hand back the difference on the odd occasion when I get too much change in a shop.

Theft is theft, it doesn't matter if it's from a shop or a charity. If it's not yours then it's not yours.

well done on your honesty-you deserve to win £100 on the lottery tonight!
I once paid for a £250 fishing box, and when the man passed me the chip-and-pin machine he had put £2.50 instead of £250.00, i, like you, thought about it afterwards but at the time it just came out of my good nature to point out his error.

What goes around comes around - I once found £100 in £5 notes and handed them in. Mates laughed at me but then the week after the place where it had been lost from contacted me and gave me a signed footy which I then sold for £200 :D

I'm ever so proud of you. That was so good! Not sure, in all honesty, what I would have done.

I'll polish your halo for you if you like. :D

I shocked a sales assistant ion the pound shop today...

i had gone in there, yesterday, and had not been feeling well, and left with an item in my scooter basket, completely by mistake (I felt ill and all i could focus on was getting home)

I realised what i'd done, and this morning, i went back in and paid for it. It was only a quid,, but it's the principle of the thing.

the assistant was totally astonished, and said "God! most folk would not have even bothered to have come back!"

But I am nothing, if not honest. I said to her, "I could have left it, and not paid, but my conscience would have plagued me, had I not come back!"

I found a couple of pound coins on the sink in a restaurant, not long back, I handed them in, too, in case they'd been reported by the lose-ee.

Burberry? me? Rich! :O the very idea! lol lol lol :D

Thing is, Rich, I like to dabble in sketching, charcoals, pastels, and watercolour painting.

I'm no great-shakes at it, but, until my technique improves a bit, i don't see the point in spending daft money on the supplies.

The £ shop has paper, pencils, charcoals, watercolour paints, pastels, that i can play about with, and not have to worry that i'm wasting the stuff, if i decde i'm not happy with the end product.

Once I think I'm up there with Van Gogh or Monet, then I might buy the pricier stuff. Till then I'm happy to experiment with my styles and techniques, using the cheapo supplies. it's fun, and it keeps me from getting into trouble, hanging around the corner shop with all the other teen-hoodies, and the wannabee hardmen.... ;)

Lestat you did exactly the right thing. Well done you

I've been in similar situations in the past and thankfully did the right thing. Once in Alders my card wouldn't work in the machine so the assistant put the bagged goods behind the desk while I went to get the cash out of the machine ... when I went back, a different assistant was there and she just handed me the goods, assuming i'd already paid for them. I explained that I hadn't, and handed over the cash.

Many years ago I went to take £10 out of a cash point outside the bank, the machine made the usual noises and then dropped a huge amount of cash... I took the cash and just stood there, bemused for a second or two, then I went into the bank to explain, as I was there an oldish bloke was just telling the assistant how he'd gone to draw some money out but the money didn't appear - so it was all sorted quickly. In those days I had very little money and it would have been all too easy to walk off with the cash, but I wouldn't have been able to live with the guilt.

I do believe what goes around comes around and would hope that most people would act honestly.

I like that. Well done Lestat. You used their service and took the glasses entering into an agreement to buy. Their mistake or not I think its only right to pay.

My local education authority once gave me around £600 too much grant money. I thought about it and told them (they took the money back). My friends said I was crazy (my family has no money and I got a full grant and needed it) and i did wonder but I think it was the right thing to do. I know the world isnt all honest but the one I choose to live in is.

Karmically maybe it worked out as in a summer job I was walking round a theme park, on my own but with customers all around me, where I worked and due to cut backs and dodgy senior management I had around 15 grand stuffed in my pockets to take to the strong room. I didnt realise it but a bag fell out - must have been 3 or 4 grand in crisp notes in there. I heard this voice from behind - is this yours?

Needless to say i didnt tell my boss that happened! Thinking about it I could have taken the cash myself .... done a runner........

There's a surprising number of non-instinctively-honest people on this forum, seemingly. :suspect:

Not as honest as you honourable people I am afraid. Recently took a watch in to have a new battery. Was notified it needed a clean and a service for which there was an additional charge of £70. When it was time to collect the watch I was only charged for the battery. I knowingly paid that price and went on my way. No feelings of guilt whatsoever, but I was cheesed off at them cos they had it for 2 months and had supposedly tried to contact me to tell me it was ready, but must have forgotten cos I didn't hear a thing from them until I contacted them. Will I go to hell?

I don't see why anyone would need to brag about being honest, isn't it a normal thing to do ?

This is it.
In the clouds, or not?
I do feel that most people are honest.
The awful things that happen always get reported in the press and we get the frightening picture that nearly everyone on the street is a thief or a murderer.
I like to hear the good news!
Lestat, you are the salt of the earth. One of the good guys!
I like to think they are in the majority.
