View Full Version : Pride and Predjudice, were you disappointed ?
pattricia 07-10-2005, 21:57 Went to see this film last week, and was slightly disappointed. It had had such good reviews, and the two main actors Keira knightlyand Mathew McFaddyn were marvellous, but they seemed to miss a lot of the t.v. version parts out.The end was very abrupt, and disappointing,as there was no wedding scene, like the t.v.version. They say that they have included a wedding scene for the American audience as they like happy endings, but dont we ? I have not read the book,so maybe the film version is a more accurate version of this.We didnt even get Mr.Darcy walking out of the lake,in his wet shirt !(Thats all I went for)
I've not seen the film yet but you should give the book a go. It's witty, amusing and very entertaining. Although I guess it's not an easy read by today's standards it's worth making the effort to get into. There's no big wedding 'scene' but there is a nice rounding off to things in a way not included in the BBC version :)

The ending of the film version consisted of Mr.Darcy going to ask for the hand of Lizzie, and her father saying an aside to the camera, after he came out. Maybe that is the books ending, but I do like a wedding scene at the end. Mathew McFaddyn gave a much more sympathetic version of Darcy than the t.v.Darcy,and it worked.
How Mr Darcy be anyone other than Colin Firth is beyond me!!
I loved that version so won't be going to see this one!!
:)

:) Thats what I thought, but Mathew McFaddyn is very good. Also Kiera Knightly is much better than the t.v.Lizzie.Cant believe that shes only 20yrs.old as she is a marvellous actress. Cant get used to no"Wet shirt scene"though !

No the book has an epilogue after the marriage. You'll have to read it though I'm saying no more ;)
As for a sympathetic Darcy - his pride is pretty central to the plot. He's not supposed to be that sympathetic (at least until towards the end). I thought the BBC's version did the book justice there.
It sounds like the film's done to P&P what Emma Thompson did to Sense & Sensibility. It was very enjoyable but she made virtually all of the male characters sympathetic in a way they really aren't in the book. Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars was quite endearing in a foppish kind of way (unless you really loathe Hugh Grant I suppose) but reading the book I would have liked to have reached in and given the character a good slap around the face with a wet kipper before smothering him in his own wet blanket.
BexBowden 08-10-2005, 07:33 The film version had nothing on the tv series, i must admit i didnt walk into the cinema with very high expectations at all, as i loved the bbc series so much. I think Kiera knightly did an ok job of elizebeth bennet, but in my opionion the tv actress was better, and as for mr darcy, no-one was ever gonna play that role better than colin firth, in my books ( and yes, no lake scene?! whats that all about eh,lol)
The film version seemed rushed and i agree with others who have said a wedding scene at the end would have at least made it a bit better.
All in all i was v-dissapointed with the film, am gonna read the book next though.

crowefan 09-10-2005, 08:23 I thought the film was lovely..............Kiera Knightly is NOT an actress I like really but she was delightfull in theis version. and I must admit mr mcfaddern who played Darcy, was smouldering.......just as good as Colin Firth.
The film was not chocolate boxy and therefore very different to the tv series. but it felt real....
The supporting cast was wonderfull too, a stand out was Donald Sutherland was Elizabeth's father, didnt he bring a tear to your eye at the end????
the girl that played Jane was excellent too
go and see it
i see no men have posted ....no suprise there.
my mate got dragged to see it and as its his girlfriend of only a few weeks felt he had to go..... he complained about it for about 3 hrs to me next time i saw him instead haha.
I haven't seen the film and I don't think I will - esp after reading this !!
I don't think its fair though to say that there was so much more in the TV version - of course there was ! The film is what ? 2 hours long ? The BBC adaptation was over 6 hours if I remember rightly ?
I love the book and the BBC version so much I think I'll give the film a miss for fear of ruining my Mr. Darcy fantasy :D :P

Kiera Knightly really does have no boobs at all, it suprised me how flat she really is. Mr Darcy guy was not stunning but it worked well between them. Donald Sutherland was good yes.
Never read the book or watched tv series so i enjoyed it for wot it was. and yes i cried. as usual.
The film can't possibly touch on the subtlety that the TV version did because of the time length - the film is two hours and the TV version was 6 one hour episodes. They can't possibly convey the complexities of Mr Darcy and the relationship between Lizzie and Mr Darcy - it's just not simply possibly in the time allowed. Certain aspects of the plot have to be cut too, and that results in a story that isn't as deep.
If you go into the cinema to expect it to be the same as the TV version you will be disappointed, they're completely different formats and therefore will attract completely different adapatations. They're both very good in their own right, and both stay fairly faithful to the book. Personally I prefer the film version, mainly because you can sit down and watch it in two hours, and of course Keira Knightley is fantastic! ^_^
