After a long period of unemployemt I have been considering my options and one is taxi driving.

I was wondering if anybody knew how would one get in to this line of work?

I was also wondering if there were any taxi drivers out there who had any advice about whether I should be in fact even contemplating this line of work?

Thanks in advance.

Can you drive at least 20% above the speed limit at all times?
Can you beep your horn if someone fails to come out of their house within 5 seconds of your arrival?
Can you switch lanes in an instant, without any regard (let alone indication) to other road users?
Can you perform illegal U turns at every given opportunity?

Those who can, drive (taxis).

I have actually been practicing these thechniques over the last few days and have become quite adept at them.

Thanks for your very invaluable input t020, we can always count on you :)

I used to think Taxi driving was the kinda job someone as lazy as me would enjoy. However, given the number of drunks on the street, throwing up in your cab, doing runners, threats... and thats just the women... I'm not sure if I could be arsed. Anyway I have better jobs now!

If I were to contemplate it again (highly doubtfull) I'd deffo opt for a black cab. Lockable doors and generally a safer environment IMHO!

Personally I'd go for airport taxis - you know what you're doing in advance and there's much less chance of people throwing up all over your vehicle :)

Yeah it'd have to be a black cab for me.
Nice big screen between you and the rabble/vomit/idiocy.

Could quite fancy a black cab as a normal car actually!
Spacious, reliable, guaranteed for 300,000 odd miles, cheap to fix and run, must be economic, can use bus lanes, wont get stolen, nobody'll notice you etc. Also quite a cool car, in an anti-fashion way. Very patriotic too.

I seem to remember a member of royalty driving one around London to avoid the paparazzi.

Stephen Fry used to drive one around London for just these reasons.
