View Full Version : The factories behind Winn Gardens
Wondered if anyone knew what was happening to them?
We live at Kingswood Hall (adjacent Wadsley Park Village) and have started to notice a lot of banging sounds.
I heard rumours of it being demolished, but am now wondering the banging sounds are due to demolition or are the factories still working?
I noticed a couple of large blocks further up being knocked down a few weeks ago, which may indicate the rumours are correct.
I suppose it would be nice to see them gone. Not sure what would look good in its place?
lauramottram 07-10-2005, 11:55 trees and fields!!
surely kingswood hall is ON wadsley park village?
surely kingswood hall is ON wadsley park village? [/B]
Hmmmm, i would refer to Wadsley Park Village as the new housing, which Kingswood Hall isn't.
Either way, i was just trying to illustrate our vantage point of the factories.
lauramottram 07-10-2005, 12:09 oh i see, i suppose you do have a good vantage
so when they convert the other building and the church will they too be adjacent?!
also, did u hear music on saturday night, all night, coming from that direction? im sure its not just me going mad!
i think those buildings are on clay wheels lane arent they? a pretty established industrial area

You probably did hear music, there's often someone having a party on a saturday night.
Re; the church/clocktower - i would say they'll be WITHIN WPV being as they have both been built around. Is this really important?????????
fox20thc 07-10-2005, 14:25 Hi, well the factories behind the estate were owned by union carbide ltd. They are doing a clean up and demolition job as the new development company who have bought the site are proposing to build 550 new properties. plus light industry.
Included in the proposals are a roadbridge from middlewood road down beeleywood and claywheels to penistone road and a footbridge across the river.

A road bridge would be handy and would help congestion at Leppings Lane.
Any ideas who the developer is?
fox20thc 07-10-2005, 14:47 Craig marks and his team who are doing the snow dome are responsible. Upper don rennaisance!
Henrietta 07-10-2005, 19:22 The footbridge is a stupid idea. Ill thought out.
Greybeard 07-10-2005, 20:15 I found some minutes (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/council-meetings/area-panels/owlertonsouthey-green/agenda-24th-november-2004/minutes-11th-october-2004) of a council meeting last November. Is there anythig later available that includes plans etc ?
Henrietta 07-10-2005, 22:59 Typically, any plans over this development have not been greatly publicised; and more specifically, the residents of Winn Gardens have not been made aware of the proposals which would affect them directly - and not in a positive way, either...
Seems to be a case of ignoring the fact that people's lives will be directly affected by these suggestions, with no great effort to consider the current residents - nor allow them the knowledge or opportunity to challenge the proposals

Don't be silly, Kingswood Hall (or the old hospital if people want to know what they are on about) is part of the Middlewood Hospital (re) Development site . The actual estate has now been renamed "Wadsley Park Village" and includes all new houses or refurbished buildings which in turn includes the old hospital!
So as much as you try to escape from it you live on Wadsley Park Village........its not that bad!

The consultation exercise held by the developers was held in the pavilion in Middlewood Park, over 3 days and was publicised by a 1000 leaflet drop on winn gardens and wpv in addition to being advertised in the local library.
Part of the proposals for the development is investment in the environment of the Winn estate and the footbridge is to allow access the the jobs and houses over the river from the tram stop.

I never said Wadsley Park Village was bad? I do work for most of the house builders on that site and think it's a really great development (apart from the speedbumps :gag:)
I made a big mistake saying 'adjacent' didn't I? Maybe i should edit the post.
Henrietta 08-10-2005, 10:02 The 'public meeting' was poorly advertised, and the notice given for the meeting was very short. Can't say I saw one of the 1000 leaflets giving me good notice of this meeting, its cause, and its possible consequences?
The said footbridge's location has been poorly thought out; you may think it will "allow access to the jobs and houses over the river from the tram stop", but it will also allow undesirable 'access' leading to an influx of trouble on the estate... one thing about the Gardens is its relatively enclosed status; providing some protection to the residents, children and property.
Pandora's Box, anybody?

I also understand this has been in the pipeline for 18 months and it is only now that the residents are being filtered some notice of the proposals
lauramottram 10-10-2005, 12:14 i got two seperate leaflets about the meeting and it was in the local rag, i think thats a fair amount of advertising?
Henrietta 10-10-2005, 17:06 Strange - I didn't receive two leaflets. And what are you classing as your 'local rag'? The Star, or the Journal?
lauramottram 11-10-2005, 11:09 that free one that gets delivered i think it was

I live at Kingswood Hall too.
Heard a while ago (about 18 months ago) that the factories were being pulled down but haven't had any notice of any plans for the area.
I agree with the speedbumps comment!! Awful.
lauramottram 12-10-2005, 11:24 i was thinking about the speed bumps on the estate and the councillor had said that one day, the council will just come and put the final layer of the road surface on, no one will know when however.
therefore as that layer will go over the humps, does that mean that they are bigger humps than they should be, thus are they currently illegal?
just a thought...

I was told the bumps will be replaced with a rubber type that are soft if walked on, but harden when driven on.
I don't think they will be as high as they are at present.
franc1987 12-10-2005, 21:23 i think on the speed bump issue, the final road surface will be put on, but not over the speed bumps so there fore they will become less violent? just a thought......
fox20thc 28-10-2005, 11:37 There was an article about it in the star last night. Seems they think it will be developed for industry only, not the plans that we have seen. Does anyone know if the planning application has gone in yet?
