Yeah, I've figured out what the error was.

Our default printer is a PDF writer and, being American, was set to Letter.

So, when our students go to print and choose a 'real' printer, it was still retaining the paper size used by the default printer when the database was set up.

Altering the settings of the PDF writer to A4 cures it, but it's very strange that Access would take this information as soon as a database is created.
