Called in at 'Staples' today having noticed that they can produce photo copies from CDs/floppies.

Scenario:
Assistant puts floppy in and shouts over to staff that printer drivers not installed. Various staff join in on speculation on whose fault it may be.... male assistant says he will tell her what to do if she helps him find something he has lost.

Time passes. She finds said item for him. His advice is 'to use that computer on display, it's connected to a printer ' off she goes. Then she comes back - can't find printer. Male assistant having had his lost item found for him has vanished sharpish...

More dialogue ensues about who may be responsible. The staff don't seem to know what drivers are anyway (surprised they didn't phone down to the loading bay :hihi: )

Machines are moved to check everything is 'plugged in' Assistant (although very nice) starts swearing loudly about whole thing.

More time passes......

Male assistant comes back, points vaguely to where display computer with printer is located.

Off she goes.

back she comes - computer doesn't have a floppy drive and another printer she found has a broken key board. Can't do it she says, I did try my best.

Called in at Pinders drawing office supplies nearby.
Scenario:
Greeted by calm, confident and professional assistant. Place order. Walk out of shop, collect order twenty mins later.
Painless, job done.
 Rant over :D

Mods feel free to remove.......

I have used Pinders quite a lot in the past and always found them to be fairly priced and extremely helpful.

Mail Boxes Etc also do printing from disks / memory cards / cd's etc. They are VERY efficient and VERY cheap too.

They are based on Eldon Street, near Devonshire Green.

That's if you can get their attention in the first place :suspect:

I was in there earlier this week and dared to speak to a bloke with a pair of scissors in his hand. He gave me a look like thunder for not taking the hint that ignoring me meant he was busy.

He changed his demeanour completely when he realised I was there for one of his business customers

I used to work at staples when i was 17 (i'm now 24) never got trained in anything expected to do overtime for no extra money cause they were understaffed, (they basically made out that i would get the sack if i didn't)
i did 2 years so i think i might be the longest member of staff they have ever employed
while i was there they 4 different general managers (3 left while i was there) and about 20 new staff (about 16 left after a month or two)

I have also worked at pinders about a year ago and hats off to them they were really nice people who worked there so much more organised, friendly etc

Lol... Ask for Lindsay next time she has a Computing A Level... can't promise she won't swear though!

I worked at Staples too- sounds like just after Craig left. I got a new Gen. Man starting same time I did and he made it pleasant to work there, with social nights and what have you. But Staples hires mostly students because they're more desperate for the money and can be asked to do more hours and as such doesn't train em much. A video from comedy central on H&S and a tour of the aisles and that's it.

They never threatened me with the sack though- sounds like Craig got a nasty run.

I was part of the team that opened the Sheffield branch. All was good for a while but then it turned into a pile of crap!
Don't blame the staff, it's the management's fault. (At company not store level)

Can Pinders do things the other way round ?

I need some maps, printed on A3 size paper, scanning onto CD as a bitmap images.

Possible ?? Expensive ??

I'm pretty sure that they have a large format scanner. If not, they will know who has.

Thanks, - they couldn't but knew somebody who could.

G&L Services (2754737) on Bramall Lane. But an A3 b/w image scanned onto CD at 300dpi in TIFF format will cost me £20 !

Think I'll scan 'em myself in bits and stitch them with Panavue. ;)

£20 for 2 minutes work and a 15p disk?

That's outrageous.

Well I've five to do, so perhaps 30 minutes with burning the CD, at a cost to me of £100.00 :o

You might as well just buy an A3 scanner.

Pinders can do it but they will need to be sure that you have license to reproduce. If you have an OS licence number you *might* be ok.

Pinders is never cheap, but they rarely get it wrong, and if they do they will put it right. You pay for service and competence.

Well Pinders said they couldn't do it and suggested the company who want to charge me £20/sheet for digitising these maps.

The maps are from the 1896 OS whose copyright has lapsed. However Sheffield City Libraries who supplied me with copies do have a copyright interest, but have assured me that provided I use the maps strictly for private study I can digitise them.

I can do it myself but it's a tedious business having to scan each map in four sections and then stitch them together.

Normally too expensive at over £1,000 but I have just seen this (http://www.cocc.co.uk/itemdesc.asp?ic=MUSA3SCAN) at £74!!!!

Was going to say, there's no need to pay £1000 for one.

A friend of mine had one through college. He managed to afford it on his student income so they cant all be that expensive.

74 quid seems very cheap though
