View Full Version : WinXP Pro Auto Updates
commuter 06-10-2005, 12:41 Ok. Long story but I'll try and shorten it. Installed XP pro incl sp2 a couple of weeks ago to overwrite a copy of the same that a friend "helpfully" upgraded me to from his disc. I get "page cannot be displayed" when trying to get to ms updates. Connecting to web via USR 9106 wireless router, desktop is hard wired into router along with other pc running Win ME, laptop is wireless connection running xp pro and can be updated from ms updates so routing is not the problem. I did register the installation when prompted
Any ideas on what to check?
limpetboy 06-10-2005, 19:34 Can you get to other websites? If not have you configured your PC to connect to the router? Are you using something other than Internet Explorer?
steevie/d 06-10-2005, 19:43 is it a legal copy of xp if not you will have problems billy boy is clamping down on illeagal software nowadays:thumbsup:
alchresearch 07-10-2005, 06:59 The Windows Update site did have a couple of drop-offs yesterday.
commuter 07-10-2005, 09:39 I can connect to other websites so router is ok. I use AOL as ISP so usually google from the field on my home page. This version of XP is (supposed) to be legal and was purchased to replace the copy a friend of mine loaded on. I think I managed to register the copy during the install process, would it be worth re-installing xp?
AOL can see any other website I search for so would it be fair to assume it could be an IE setting? what changes should I make (if any) to the list of trusted sites?
alchresearch 07-10-2005, 10:43 I'm on Windows Update at the minute and I've been getting errors that it cannot connect. But a simple REFRESH gets it going.
commuter 07-10-2005, 10:58 does anyone know how I can check if my "new" version of windows is legit? I bought it off ebay from an MS OEM supplier.

Or...
Double click MY COMPUTER
Click HELP on the top toolbar
Click "Is this copy of Windows Legal"

Tried this but it can't connect to the website :gag: I think the problem is possibly a configuration issue and may be something to do with trusted sites settings.
from within aol if I select file - open - web window IE opens with Royal Bank of Scotland login page (my bank is set to home page for IE) should I set it to be ms site?

Try calling Microsoft. I think you'll find they're really hot about potentially pirated software even if their staff dont always know what they're talking about. They have this mantra drummed in to them and everyone you speak with there is red hot about the subject.
Therefore if you intend to phone them and have the slightest concern it is remotely not quite sound, I suggest you withhold your phone number and double check the Product ID Number is OK. You can tell if its OEM because it will state it in the Product ID Code probably immediately after the first sequence of numbers. If it is OEM rather than full box product (which is much more expensive) you may find technically speaking it isnt strictly legal. Unless Microsoft changed the rules they usually require OEM products to be bought at the same time as buying a new computer or hardware device for an existing
Just remembered if your software is an OEM product then Microsoft wont be of very much use because they dont keep records of OEM software products and usually refer customers back to their supplier. I would imagine they may well be very interested in your OEM supplier although if they are a Microsoft approved reseller they will give it the nod of approval.
commuter 12-10-2005, 11:14 managed to validate the software on MS site last night but now getting error codes
0x80072EE2 & 0x80072EFD
When trying to run an update manually from the updates page on the MS website.
My laptop is connected wirelessly to the same adsl router/modem and can get the updates so its not the router config.
steevie/d 13-10-2005, 09:06 This is so simple guys!!
Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> click Manage Add-ons
Find the "Windows Genuine Advantage" add-on in the menu and then click Disable in the Settings box at the botton
Now go back to the Windows Update page and download as normal
You have to have SP2 installed for this to work!! :D

I have no idea why you think that will work but I'm assuming you're still on the whole idea of it being a "dodgy copy"...
I did some googling and found this...
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/2005-06/msg02562.html
.. which points to these Knowledge base articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842773
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;883357
That may provide the solution... but google will undoubtedly be more use than anything else...
steevie/d 13-10-2005, 10:25 try this then martin
http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?fr=slv1-wave&p=0x80072EE2
commuter 13-10-2005, 10:32 Thanks Martin_s will try the links when I'm home tonight. Last night I was preparing to copy all data onto the slave hdd before uninstalling windows and starting from scratch - which would have been a real pain in the a**.
fnkysknky 13-10-2005, 10:32 Sounds like it's being firewalled to me. Windows Update obviously isn't connecting to the server.
Martin_s 13-10-2005, 10:43 try this then martin

Actually based on that Yahoo search I would have to say that this is probably a better bet...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941
However I still fail to see how removing the validation tool as suggested by Steevie/d would actually solve the problem... As I said before this still seems to focus on the idea that this is a duff copy of WinXP and not focusing on the actual problem.

I had this problem last night, after some of the update failed, but the rest downloaded. if you copy and paste the error message, which was in the top right-hand corner of the screen, into the search box on the help page, it will give you the solution....i.e. you have to add three MS urls to Trusted Sites....then try to download the rest of the updates.
I found that, after I had done all that, I could remove the urls from the Trusted sites, and Windows Update was still working normally.

Using Macafee fw, there does not seem to be anywhere to put trusted URL's in but (I think) you can specify ip's. Also there do not appear to have been any MS or Windows update tools added to the list of trusted application on the fw.
I can connect and pick up downloads form ms using a wireless laptop via the the same USR9106 router so its not a fw on the router that could be causing the problem. Any one got any views on turning off Mcafee and turning on MS fw as a test?

 the web page for downloading updates goes through the "checking for the latest updates on this computer" and then returns a 0x80072EE2 error message. I've added the ms sites to the trusted list. Thanks for your suggestion Ann_x, I'll keep trying and I'll have a look at Martin_s suggestions as well
In Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, click on the Security Tab, click on Trusted Sites, then click on the Sites button, then add the urls.

The trusted sites functionality is part of Internet explorer itself in the context that was explained earlier...
As belatedly noted, this article

Regarding the ms.com kba above I've been through that
1= ok no probs connecting to SF!
2= ok as far as I can tell as laptop also has macafee running
3= done
4= no entries for windows update in hosts file
5= command run
6= done - message says up to date files already loaded
7= tried running this but the command failed

Sounds like that last bit might be part of where you're going wrong then...
Can I ask which command in particular failed?
commuter 13-10-2005, 13:15 Step 7: Re-create the SoftwareDistribution folder
The SoftwareDistribution folder can become corrupted. Therefore, you must re-create this folder.
To re-create the SoftwareDistribution folder, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. At the command line, type net stop wuauserv and then press ENTER to stop the Automatic Updates service.
Note You will receive a message stating the Automatic Updates service was stopped successfully.
3. Type ren %windir%\softwaredistribution sdold, and then press ENTER.
4. When you are prompted to remove the folder, press Y.
5. Type net start wuauserv, and then press ENTER to restart the Automatic Updates service.
How do you cut and paste into dos? to elimiate the risk of mistyyyping :hihi:
fnkysknky 13-10-2005, 13:44 Cut and paste using right mouse button - ctrl v doesn't work in a dos window

Erm... yes I could read that... what I mean't was... which command in that list of 5 points did you have an error reported with?
commuter 14-10-2005, 23:12 It was running the command "type ren .... and press Enter" that was when I got the error. I'm just about to try it now and will post again later
fnkysknky 14-10-2005, 23:29 %windir% needs replacing with your windows directory which will usually be c:\windows so number 3 in this case would actually be:
3. Type ren c:\windows\softwaredistribution sdold, and then press ENTER.
Hope that helps :)
commuter 15-10-2005, 00:10 do you think that should read rem rather than ren which would make the command remove the sdold folder?
commuter 15-10-2005, 00:25 too tired to look at screen any longer, will pick it up again. Any ideas gratefully received.
fnkysknky 15-10-2005, 15:02 No it's ren - rem is the dos command for remark for use in batch files to comment lines out.

Whereas "ren" is short for rename...
commuter 17-10-2005, 08:07 can I just navigate using explorer and rename?

 I've received this from ZD Net this afternoon:Critical Windows patch may wreak PC havoc By Joris Evers, CNET News.com
Published on ZDNet News: October 14, 2005, 6:36 PM PT
A Microsoft patch meant to fix critical security flaws in Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is causing trouble for some users, the company said Friday.
The patch was released Tuesday to fix four Windows flaws, including one that experts predict will be exploited by a worm in the coming days. The flaw, tagged "critical" by Microsoft, lies in a Windows component for transaction processing called the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MSDTC.
Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said.
The trouble appears to occur only when default permission settings on a Windows directory have been changed, according to Microsoft. The software maker has received "limited reports" of problems from customers but is still investigating the issue, a representative said.
Even if users experience PC trouble after installing the patch, they will still be protected against any attack exploiting the Windows flaw, a Microsoft representative said. The patch was delivered with Microsoft security bulletin MS05-051.
To resolve any problems caused by the MS05-051 patch, users should restore the default permissions for the Windows folder and the COM+ catalog. A guide is available on the Microsoft Web site, and steps start with changing the permissions on the "registration" folder in the Windows directory. I don't know whether this is the solution to any problems that some people might be having.
Typical Microsh***!

If anyone was seriously nuts enough to change the default permissions on their windows folder (which would either be, someone flailing in the dark or an expert) then I'd be surprised as it'd likely have reprecussions for access to programmes, etc.. anyways and it's likely that that's the reason why it's caused the problem.
Most users (read 99.9999% of them) wouldn't touch those specific permissions so it's a little unlikely in this instance... Worth knowing about though, thanks for sharing...
commuter 25-10-2005, 22:58 Latest instalment (pun intended)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=7 - this works
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us - this does not
I think I've been through all the suggestions but still have a problem. The main problem is that I can't scan to identify the updates I need to install.
Any more ideas - other than lob the damn thing out of the window!!!
