I know that there are scientists on here so I hope they can help.

My daughter (11) shows a strong leaning towards the sciences already. She has asked for a microscope for Christmas. Now obviously we don't want to go mad (can't go mad) on the expense side of things but would love to buy her a starter one.

She has a kit with one in but is really is no more than a toy and to be honest it's useless.

How much should I expect to pay? Where should I go to buy one?

I would be prepared to travel to buy one.

Hi Mo,

Great idea - my microsocope is a Russian one that's about 20 years old and built like a brick outhouse. The mechanics on it are VERY smooth, and the optical quality is good enough for me. All metal build, cost me about £120 back then.

I did a Google and found this :

It's a great hobby - I got my first toy microsocope as a kid and have tinkered with microscopy on and off since then.

Thank you for that JP,very kind of you to find that out for me.

I shall have a read later today and hopefully get an insight (sorry  ) into the best buy.
