View Full Version : Am I the only person to keep getting my stilettoes stuck in cobbles?!!
Why has Sheffield City Centre's ENTIRE paving been replaced with 'orrible cobbles? (ok, not the ENTIRE paving - just seems like that!)
And why am I the only one wearing stilletoes to get stuck down them?! I HATE THEM! I approach them like they're stepping stone in a river - and treat them accordingly! And I ALWAYS lose my shoe as my foot invariably breaks free of the offending shoe in the offending damn cobble - Aaaargh!!!!!

Answer to your thread - no, you're not alone, I have exactly the same problem!
I've lost count of the times I've nearly twisted my ankle on Fargate as the result of my shoe heel getting stuck in a bit of fancy paving. Suppose it's my fault for wearing non-sensible shoes?! :o
The cobble-stones look beautiful, but are potentially lethal! Clearly not designed by women! :D

But not as beautiful as my shoes. :D
Yeah I get this all the time and often look like a total moron in the process. But nothing will come between me and my high heels. Nothing, I tell you!
I've toppled over on there myself a lot recently too. Can't they just "grout" round them a bit better?
It's no wonder the clipboarders from Ambulance Chaser Direct or whatever they're called have set up camp on Fargate - theres a huge supply of tottering Sheffielder's just waiting to sprain summat.

If I remember rightly the original concept of the Fargate scheme was the brainchild of a woman. :P
Maybe she doesn't do heels.
Stilletoes are dangerous anyway:suspect: .........they make a right mess of the roof lining in ya car.....:heyhey:

Lol! :heyhey: They are fabulous! :D
It's not just your stilos either! If you are fond of pointy boots, sometimes if you aren't picking your feet up properly or slaring your feet (as my mum used to tell me off for doing), then your pointy toe gets all scuffed up.
So you see, The_Rudeboy, you might get your winkle picker stuck... it's a danger for all. ;)
Thank God I'm not alone! Its just that I never see anyone else falling base over apex - just me!!! And when I do fall and try to make a joke of it, looking around for a bit of humour and sympathy, all I get is blank faces. Oh, the embarrasment of it all!!!
But I'll NEVER stop wearing them - nothing looks sexier -even tho they've given me a slight bunion on my right foot - I'll just have to avoid the cobbles! I just dont feel dressed when I'm wearing "flatties" - not that it happens reguarly!

Yay! Flatties = :gag:
Yeah I do the look around nervously laughing but nobody is laughing with me. I rather tend to get this look instead -
B*stards. :hihi:
Missbrum 05-10-2005, 15:13 Hehe, this happened to me on west street a few weeks ago.
My heel got caught in the gap between paving stones, shoe didnt come off though! Instead, i was stood with one foot forward, my other foot stuck, trying to ease the heel out of the gap! Outside a busy pub aswell, with full length windows and to top it off, my mate walked off laughing pretending not to know me! :( VERY embarrasing!

Aaaaww Missbrum you have my sympathy! ;) Amazing what we do for the sake of fabulous shoes sometimes. :hihi:

That was my 'Clash' phase in the early 80's
*wonders if red winkle pickers were such a good look*

Cripes! Can you imagine snagging your winkle picker, whilst wearing bondage trousers? You'd never regain balance.

Yes, I remember the red wickle picker look.... :suspect:
Red wasn't the best idea ever - although - it has to be said - black winkle pickers, that IS a great look!

sheff_minx 05-10-2005, 15:36 Can I join the club please?? My shoe came completely off today on Fargate during the busy lunch period - I had to battle back through the crowds in order to get it back. But i will NEVER give up my stilettoes - they transform my short chunky legs into long and slender man-catchers (or so I like to think!!)
Yep the cobbles are really annoying. I very rarely wear heels as i'm pretty tall but when I do I've left my shoe behind a few times and ended up hopping (and thats hard in heels!) back to stick my foot back in my shoe and try to prise it out of the cobbles.
I get so embarassed about it, and last time ended up nearly tripping the person up behind me as I stopped that suddenly they did'nt know whether to laugh or be angry with me!
Well I'm glad it just is not me making a fool of themselves.
sugarnspice 05-10-2005, 15:39 Nearly crying with laughter (and sheer relief that it doesn't just happen to me either).
It's hateful but I'm proud of us all for not giving up on our high heeled "friends". :hihi:
sexibabe 05-10-2005, 17:18 Oh yes- that rings a bell with me too. The last time it happened I was just in front of Virgin where the man stands selling the Big Issue. After nervously looking around I turned to retrieve my shoe to find him killing himself with laughter!! Oh the shame of it all- still wear the stilettos though I won't be parted from them....;)
Maybe it's a ploy by a council/health authority think tank to try and get us to stop wearing "silly shoes" that will have us all crippled by the time we're 40 (and therefore costing the NHS loads of money in physio and chiropody). :suspect:
They'll be a stall at the top of Fargate giving out free Earnshaws next! :o
sugarnspice 08-10-2005, 11:45 I wore the craziest shoes I own the other night and didn't fall over!
Sorry - just had to tell someone!
WallBuilder 08-10-2005, 16:31 I was in town yesterday and spent a while at the top of Fargate and was most disappointed, I didn't see one damsel in distress although there were a few [very nice] heels around. I also noticed a wheelchair user giving the cobbles a wide berth so maybe they aren't the best idea for a busy area.

Well I have BoroughGal - for over 30 years in fact - and I wholeheartedly agree with Feargal. A bit of grouting would help solve the problem. Maybe you're just lucky. Or maybe your heels aren't quite as high as ours! :hihi:  :hihi:
I used to have this off to a fine art - keeping an eye on the layout of the bricks and making my heels land squarely in the centre of them, whilst holding my head high - not an easy trick :P
I once got the heel of an impossibly spiky boot caught firmly in a pavement crack, but was lucky enough that the bloke next to me had been looking for an excuse to examine them closer all afternoon, so was pretty quick off the mark at grappling it out for me :suspect:
