I'm doin a uni degree and i've been given a plot of land to design a new building fo rthe city centre. But what does sheffield need. It has a lot of things within the centre and i just cant think of something.

Anyone have any suggestions?

One thing we don't need is another night club  How about an indoor beach under a glass dome and the temperature is always very warm and has a wave machine and palm trees and women wearing bikinis and the price of beer is very cheap

One thing the top end of town (Fargate down to the markets) needs is a clean, hygienic and vandal proof public toilet block.

I know it's not a nice subject but when you're caught short for a call of nature in town there's hardly anywhere to go, cos it's not always convenient to go all the way down to TJ Hughes or Cole Brothers etc.

There was the ones in Orchard Square but they've been that badly vandalised over time the council have clearly decided why bother doing them up every time when they'll only get vandalised again.

A beach bar. That's what Sheffield city centre needs.

Seriously, I thought of an idea when I was on holiday in Spain last summer. If someone could come up with a design for a bar that gave the 'impression' of a beach bar in foriegn climes, it could work very well.

Perhaps there could be a screen at the opposite end of the bar running continuous film of the beach and the sea, the floor could be wooden decking and the bar staff could wear shorts.... oh this is getting silly now!

How about an underground shopping mall? I know you have the plot of land so with that you could a new tourist info centre and an elaborate entrance to the mall, or just do like the council and build a multi storey car park on it....oh wait you need a building on the plot of land to knock it down first for a car park!

Sorry i'm not being much help now am I?
i'll go lay down for a bit!

i'll just go with a beach bar like everyone else, it will be summer all year round:thumbsup:

How about a virtual reality bar? Choose any environment you like!

Seroiusly though, I think the city centre could do with a decent mainstream cinema complex. I think the Odeon in town whilst being 'OK' is a bit shabby when compared with the facilities at Centertainment.

Also Odeon = rip off compared to the UGC.

I thought there was a plan to build a warner brothers multi screen where castle market is. Having said that though, that was 4 years ago, so it's obviously been sacked off.

More public conveniences for a start and how about a new advice place for the locals?

Not imaginative for you? Ok try this then............

Imagine going into a cafe, you find yourself an empty booth and peruse the menu which is standing beside a computer screen. You order and while you wait for your order you use the computer to find information/continue researching for homework.

Knocking down and starting all over again!

And I'm serious. The infrastructure is terrible, the layout is bad for shopping, and many of the buildings look shabby. I propose blowing up everything apart from the historical buildings like the city hall, and totally redesigning it so that:
- the road network can cope with the traffic to flow around the centre with ease
- more carparks are built to accommodate cars, all surrounding the centre
- the shopping area will be a large 'square' shape as opposed to the 'stretch' it is now (mainly from the bottom of the Moor right up and then down to Fargate), thus making the shops be within closer proximity. It will also be free of any vehicles.
- a small indoor shopping centre will be built within the centre - most other cities have their own, in-town 'mini meadowhall', so why shouldn't Sheffield?
- more green areas, and bars and cafes with outdoor tables and chairs. An awful lot more trees.
- supertram to circulate the centre, but not to enter it (as applies to cars and buses).
- more bins, and plenty of 'litter wardens' patrolling the area to fine people who litter on the spot, and to clear up any mess from people who they didn't catch in the act.

Before we all get too side tracked, the real question of this thread (if you bothered to read the first post) is :
'What new building does Sheffield City Centre need?"

NOT

'What does Sheffield City Centre need?"

"i've been given a plot of land to design a new building for the city centre.

I will edit the thread title to avoid any further confusion. By all means start a
'What does Sheffield City Centre need?" thread should you desire.

How about - just give me a minute - if we could dig a big hole, like, I dunno, at Castle Square - and dig tunnels out in all directions that lead to the main department stores.
Then, we could put a few kiosks down there, like a newsagents, cobblers, key cuters etc, and maybe even - I know this sounds daft - but maybe a fishtank.
Add a few potted plants and it'd make a lovely underground complex. It could be an excellent way to avoid the rain, and have a chat to a friend on a bench etc.

I've not yet thought of a good name for it yet. Any ideas? The one that comes to mind is just too obvious.

Toataly agree, a fresh new idea like that is just what Sheffield needs. ;)

I have it !!!!!! we could call it "The Hole in the Middle" a bit like a polo really

Really like the idea of the indoor beach, are bikinis compulsory and if so do us girlies get to choose the guys attire?

What Sheffield really needs is a Crazy Golf Course. Some of the flat land near the bottom of the moor (potential site of new market I think) would be good for this.

Wonder if it would make any money?

Crazy golf would be quite good around the back of the Oasis at Meadowhall, where the temporary ice rink stood over christmas.

It'd give all those fed-up blokes something to do - other than slouching in the boozer - while they wait for their wives to buy shoes, bags and shoes (it happens!) :)

A rollercoaster that goes from fargate to bottom of moor, this would cut out the need to dodge all the people that mill about on fargate.

Something like a monorail that runs from the bottom of Fargate to the bottom of the Moor that you can just hop on and hop off. It needn't take up much room. Single file, standing only, but it can be such a pain to get from one part of town to another - it's so spread out. I have two banks, on opposite sides of town. Great joy to walk between the two....

Definitely like the idea of an indoor beach area. This would have :

- wave pool
- sand
- small shops selling tropical drinks and cocktails etc
- ethnic food outlets
- video wall with sky scene projected on it and a sun that sets every couple of hours. Evening meals whilst watching the sunset would be big business. There would be sounds too, especially from the birds flying around
- tropical fish tanks [big ones !!!]
- plants
- live music from steel bands etc

The place could be called Sheffield Steel [tentative link to the steel bands etc !] however other names such as Life's a Beach could be cool too

Oooh a tropical paradise without getting on a plane - nice

Including the large congregation of Big Issue sellers and market researchers situated between Marks and Spencers and Boots towards the bottom of Fargate.
