Ysobel 04-10-2005, 12:45 PM I'm considering bidding for flats in this area but would like more information. Is this a reasonable area? I've had a look round and I like the feel of the place. Some people have made an effort growing plants round the flats, which are currently being modernised. It also seems very convenient for shops, buses, doctors etc. However, I noticed in one block (near the playground) the police have installed a CCTV camera! Does anyone know if they get much trouble here?
I'm also considering Stradbroke (Stradbroke Rd/Smelterwood area). How does this compare to Woodhouse?
I have health problems and currently live alone so want somewhere I'll feel safe and also somewhere (fairly) quiet.
Any advice would be welcome.

A relative's friend lives on this road - seems reasonable; did notice a bit of litter around, but other that, I haven't anything to whinge about.
:D
nick2 04-10-2005, 04:28 PM I used to live on Stradbroke Road, in the flats just up from City School, although the area is not as bad as some places it's not that great anymore (it used to be very clean/quiet/desirable), the area round Stradbroke Shops is filthy and usually there is a lot of litter everywhere. When i lieved there there was a big problem with joy riders tearing up and down Stradbroke Road, but I think the speed bumps have sorted that out.
Bus services from Woodhouse/Stradbroke are dire and take ages to get into town.
My doctors are on Skelton Lane and whenever I go up there, it always seems ok. I've noticed that a lot of the flats are being done-up at the moment too. Never been up there in the evening though, so can't say if it changes - as many places seem to after dark ...
Ysobel 05-10-2005, 01:46 PM Thanks for all the replies. I've decided I will start bidding for the flats at Woodhouse, and possibly Stradbroke too, as I haven't had a barrage of replies saying --- "Don't go there!!" I'm working on the principle that no news is good news! However, I'll probably get my sister to run me round there in the evening a couple of times to check it out.
I'm not too worried about the length of the bus journey into town as I probably wouldn't go into town that much. There seems quite a lot in Woodhouse, also Crystal Peaks is near by.
Judging by what I've read on here about the property shop though it will probably take me years to get a flat! I've got over 7 years waiting time but looking at the property shop website it seems most flats at Woodhouse go to priority applicants. Anyhow, thanks.

Adman 07-10-2005, 04:30 PM I lived in a flat right next to the park for a couple of years, we never had any problems in the area except for the odd **** head making his way home from the pubs.
There are quite a few kids that hang around the park that can be noisey but nothing serious.
Buses are very good and you can pretty much get anywhere in sheffield without any problems.
hope this helps.
i would not touch stradbroke with a barge pole ,at the moment it is getting worse and worse .i too am looking to move up to village area i have been on housing list 28yrs does any one know how long i would have to wait.all in all the bus services are very good at woodhouse except on a sunday as you cannot get to crystal peaks till after about 1oclock
Ysobel 17-10-2005, 03:49 PM Thanks everyone! I've recently had a look on Stradbroke Rd. Didn't like the look of it at all. Doors boarded up (and someone living in the flat!), also intimidating looking young men roaming around. It may have been a bad day though.
There also seems to be some trouble round the Skelton area of Woodhouse that's got worse just recently. Again noticed a boarded up window in a lived in flat, smashed entrance door and police notices on nearly every block. Waterslacks area or Tilford Rd area may be better?
Lint, I should think with 28 years waiting time you'll have no trouble getting somewhere fairly quickly. I get the Property Shop guide every week and flats at Woodhouse seem to go to people with 5 - 15 years waiting time (though many go to priority applicants especially ground floor). I still like Woodhouse but am going to hang on for a while before bidding for anything.
pedro1 29-10-2005, 04:54 PM It depends on how old you are. My father in-law lives in one of the flats and he`s in his 70`s. I think you have to be over a certain age to bid for them. It`s a lovely area though.
