Sad news indeed.

We have lost a giant of a comedian. Personally speaking, I feel a little part of my youth has been taken away.

Intelligent, funny, at times a little crude - Open All Hours - but top entertainment.

And not a swear word in sight.

RIP "Four Candles".

This is so sad. I remember the Two Ronnies from being a kid and a teenager, and also the sketch with John Cleese about 'class' - the joke being that Cleese, Barker and Corbett stand in a line of descending height.

Cleese, nodding towards Barker, says 'I am upper class, I look down on him'
Barker, nodding to Cleese and Corbett in turn : 'I am middle class, I look up to him, and down on him'
Corbett : 'I knows my place!'

Always makes me laugh!

And the Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town, Charlie Farlie and Piggy Malone.....

All one can say is 'It's good night from him.' And thanks for the laughs from the rest of us.

Doing the playschool run this morning when I heard this, really sad.

I grew up watching the Two Ronnies - they just don't make comedy programmes like that anymore, let's face it 'The Chuckle Brothers' are no way near!!!

My favorite sketch from the Two Ronnies was where they lived in a village run by women and all the men wore dresses and frilly aprons and baked. They had the womens role and the women were the bosses (as it should be!).

The men had to meet in secret to be butch! It was so funny, I'm laughing now as I remember it.

The Worm That Turned :)

We all have to go, but it's good to leave behind such a wealth of talent to share for the future.

This is indeed sad news.

I've allways had hopes that one day we might get to see what Arkwright and Granville are doing today?

Big fan for as long as I can remember.

Best wishes to the Barker family.

I agree with what Joe says.
A legend. It's not very often comedians of Ronnies calibre are born.

His funeral will be marked by the lighting of at least two candles, indeed possibly three and maybe four in memory of a giant of the entertainment world.

I initially saw this thread and thought it was some sick joke and had to verify it with BBC news. I still cant believe the news even after reading the story.

The world of entertainment has lost a great character and a comical genius. I would like to thank Ronnie for all those years of entertainment, as I grew up. Open all Hours and Two Ronnies to name a few. God bless - Ronnie Barker!

Might his old record be re-released "A pint of old and filthy" with the immortal "Billy Pratt's Bananas"?

Did no-one notice the reference to the 4 candles in my previous posting?

Very sad news. Porridge is one of the few comedy shows from the 70s which hasn't dated to much

Just reading everyone's comments and quotes from Ronnie Barkers' professional life makes you realise how much a part of us all he was.
As long as we can go on quoting his catchphrases and laughing at his sketches he will go on. Gone, but not forgotten.
He was indeed a funny man, and, as has been said, with no bad language or smutty jokes...inuendo, maybe, but definitely family entertainment.
At least he took early retirement from the business and was able to enjoy a measure of relaxation and peace before he returned to the public eye last year.
He will be missed.
Thank you, Ronnie, for such wonderful entertainment.

Great comedian, sad to see him go.

He was excellent in Porridge, with the quick, fast gags - genius.

Along with Leonard Rossiter the best British comic actor I have ever seen.

Very sad to hear that he has died.

I have got to have my say, he was a very good performer, on the way home from work i heard a sketch he did when he was playing a waiter, Ronnie C asked what water they had, and he just reeled off a load of unquotable stuff from "trent water, mucky water, severn water, six-and-a half water...throw the baby out with the bath water..." I hadn't heard it before but it made me laugh. A fine man.
But look on the bright side, if there is a Great Beyond, he'll be there...and his presence will make it that bit greater!

RIP to an amazing gentleman.

I remember sitting with my father at christmas and watching the 2 ronnies and laughing my ass off! - Ronnie Barker was a wonderful writer & comedian. As Joe said earlier - the episodes of the 'Phantom Raspberry blower of old London Town' used to have me in creases.

I am just glad to have grown up watching such great comedy.

They could put a whole night over to form a tribute to Ronnie Barker but it wouldn't be enough to cover everything.

It was a great program Zinger549.

The only thing that is disturbing about these things is that they are quite obviously all filmed well in advance of a death. It all seems a bit hollow to me somehow.
