Na then.

Whilst reading the thread about the good and bad points of life in Hillsborough, a new College at Owlerton was mentioned. This is the first i have heard of any such plans, can anyone give more details

thank you in advance

It's been planned for many years and is due to open in 2005. Here's a website which may help:

Very exciting stuff and a great web site. Two more questions, where is the college actually being built ? and has work started yet ?

once again thanks for your help.

I think it's Livesey Street, that runs down the side of the dog track.

I don't think they've started building it yet, but they've ordered the materials!

They're closing Parson Cross college next year, and moving all their courses and students there.

They're also knocking down the Wood Lane campus of Loxley college, and turning the area into a housing estate.

I always wondered what happened to the courses that ran at Shirecliffe College after it was closed and demolished.
(I am presuming that Shirecliffe College was part of the Sheffield College - bit before my time to know)

The new Owlerton site is (as the crow flies - not by road) very close to the old Shirecliffe site. I'd say it's only a 15 minute walk up over Parkwood. Seems a bit odd to ditch one site and build another so close, but the Shirecliffe College was a nightmare to get to, and was probably outdated.

Strange there is no mention of the new one they're building on the site of the old Firth Park school on their website.
Are they actually closing the Parson Cross site, because I thought it was being expanded with the new building at FP?

I was up there last Friday and they're were on about it, apparently they're closing it down next year in time for the 2005/6 college season.

The new one that they're building at Firth Park is "Longley Park Sixth Form Centre". This is not part of the Sheffield College, it is a new Local Authority sixth form.
Parsons Cross is due to close sometime soon (not sure when), and everything will move to the new Hillsborough site. Whether the students move there or try to get into Longley Park is up to them I guess??

Is it me, or is Sheffield trying to become a centre of educational excellence or something?

We have got more students in this city than ever, and yet we are still crying out for more.

Cant see a problem with large numbers of students. They bring life to the city.

The problems might come when they graduate and want to stay here. Then we could end up with loads of highly qualified people going for very few jobs. But that seems to be the case at the minute anyway.

The Hillsborough College is on the old `Booker` cash and carry site alongside of the dog stadium.

The demolition of the £2m building started w/ending Jan 10.
