View Full Version : See it to believe it - community policemen on bicycles chasing youths on a motorbike
you had to see it to believe it ,two so_called community policemen on cycles,in all there yellow gear trying to catch two youths on a motor bike.who are they kidding no wonder the bikers get away with it .police need to get in the real world
Yeah, I believe it mate! I was driving on Wolstenholme Road the other month and had to look twice when I saw 2 policemen on mountain bikes! I'm all for having more police on our streets and I'm all for community police, but not on mountain bikes!
I suppose they could be classed as bobbies on the beat though, only a bit quicker???
Escafeldia 03-10-2005, 17:58 In a situation like that they are supposed to communicate with other police who can then set up a block, complete with motor cycle coppers who are then supposed to actually catch them. The mountain bikes are there to act as spotters and to tell the others where these idiots and uninsured yobbos are heading.
the bike is still riding round now just gone past again and there are little kids playing out .an tragedy waiting to happen on here im afraid

There uses to be a tv show about this. They knew all sorts of amazing tricks and could knock suspects over with their wheels by doing wheelies and stuff! Bet they dont do that in real life!
The two police on mountain bikes have been around here a couple of times, doing a damn good job they are too!
They can get to places where cars can't and they can get there quicker than if they were on foot. They are specifically targeting areas where there's been reports of youths etc causing a nuisance either on bikes or on foot in areas usually inaccessible by car. And I bet they're a lot cheaper to run than cars too, and more environmentally friendly.

True!
It was just the shock of seeing them for the first time on the mountain bikes. It was a bit comical at first sight.

The mountain bikes are a great idea. They allow the visible presence of a bobby who's not just driving past in a car, coupled with the ability to give chase rather speedily.
Do you think that a bobby on the beat would be able to run fast enough to keep up with a motorbike?
I think they're great!
Gotta say I was a bit surprised the first time I saw them too ...
:hihi:
But as they're doing such a good job, I hope they get some more. I wonder, do they have little blue flashing lights??
Iwork2shop 04-10-2005, 09:38 The police can't win can they? They try something different i.e on mountain bikes and get criticised and laughed at, or they remain in their police cars and again get complained about.
I live in the Mosborough area where there is a big problem with kids on motor bikes. Believe it or not I've seen kids as young as 5 riding on fields where I live. There's an arguement that says that whilst there are there they are safe cos they're not on the road, however the noise is horrendous and the mud that they create on the footpaths is awful. Not only that I do believe that it's an offence to ride these bikes on fields and footpaths.
So... if there are police on mountain bikes trying to catch and stop these kids FANTASTIC I say. Let's have more of them!!

I remember that. Pacific Blue it was called. Or Baywatch on Bikes, if you like.
Quote from pacificblue.com:
It is with great sadness that we must announce "Pacific Blue" was not picked up by USA Network for a sixth season. Reruns will continue to air on USA Network. The producers, cast and crew thank everyone for all your continued support.
They sound surprised...
mountainbike 04-10-2005, 16:05 hiya,
pleased to see some positive feedback in realtion to the cops on mountain bikes as I happen to be one of them working in the south side of sheffield.
Seemed a little comical riding out for the first time in all our gear on a cold snow blizzard day in February-
However after catching well over one hundred off road bikes both on and off roads.
Throw in a few drug deals down alleways and alcohol fuelled troublemakers in children play areas and oap flats - I think maybe we have come into the real world
keep smiling
Awesome work your doing there mountainbike
I had a quick look at your bikes a few weeks ago in town. They look pretty heavy IMO. It must be hard work riding those things around all day?
Hee hee, welcome to the forum mountainbike
Can't wait for you to get back to Woodhouse - round the railway station and the 52 bus terminus area
PS: do you have any little blue flashing lights??? :hihi:

I'll second that Hels. I live in Woodhouse and we get one particular guy on a trials type bike who comes from somewhere over on Waterslacks Road and drives through the footpath which joins Colliers Close with Sheffield Road. Sometimes he has a passenger on the back and sometimes he's on his own. The other day he came through, as normal, went onto Sheffield Road and dropped his mate off at the Co-op at the top of Stradbroke Road. He waited with engine blipping then went, with his mate again down Market Street, back into Sheffield Road and shot off up Waterslacks Road again. At some stage he is going to hit someone who is walking on the footpath from Sheffield Road through to the Close. Complaints to the police don't have any effect because he goes into flats and no-one has his address. The bike carries no number plates and is, in all probability uninsured. A mountain bike or two in and around the bottom of Waterslacks Road would be a move in the right direction - with or without blue lights.
Yup, seen him around - if it's the same lad, doesn't usually wear a helmet? If only they knew how dangerous it is!
What concerns me are the kids who hang around behind the bushes where the 52 bus terminates alongside the railway line...
Push bikes? Coppers? Penny farthings anyone.
You and your mates keep up the good work mountainbike.
You don't look that daft.....honest!:P
Police on mountain bikes great idea
Most people agree they want more police in the community rather than in cars well this looks a great idea to me, out on the beat and able to chase criminals as well you would be suprised how quick you can get around on a mountain bike particularly in the centre or in bad traffic.
Plus it keeps them fit and is cheap to run into the bargain, lets see more of it.
Also if you give chase on a bike I would imagine they are far less likely to cause an accident than in a car

These mountain bikes don't cost just a couple of hundred pounds Fudbeer - the ones which were bought for the Ravenscroft area came to well over a thousand smackers. They are, as you say, very versatile in small spaces and, I suppose do keep the police in trim, as it were. Mountain bikes plus a couple of stategically placed cars and the "Spy-in-the-Sky"should be able to catch some of these guys. The trouble is the cost of getting the helicopter into the air - these things aren't cheap to run.
mountainbike 04-10-2005, 20:52 Ravenscroft TARA and Neighbourhood watch Group bought the bikes for £800 each- not cheap, but by mountain bike standards not expensive either.
You get what you pay for .
To date after well over two thousand miles despite been abandoned, thrown down, and handled by hundreds of curious school kids and used five days a week they have survived!!
As for expense they don't require any petrol and the only running cost now is a couple of chocky bars each day to keep our little legs spinning
keep smiling
Please say you don't keep your truncheons down your Lycra tights mountainbike!!
My image of our wonderful police force depends on your reply:gag:
MuteWitness 04-10-2005, 21:01 so after catching lots of people on off road bikes dont you think its time to set up a place for kids to ride off road bikes safely. Am not on about the kids who steal them and ride up and dont the road am on about the people who want to do it as a hobby and dont want to hurt anyone.

I think an appropriate " No Comment " is the safe option here
keep smiling
Well I don't care what anyone else says Mountainbike, I think you're brilliant!
Let me know when you're in Woodhouse and i'll make you a nice cuppa to revive those tired legs! :hihi:
I haven't seen these guys yet!
I was wondering if SYP had scrambling bikes yet though - as that seems the most practical method of catching these brats
re mountainbike if you are the same one you were down here on severnside on monday as soon as the biker and his mate saw you chatting to someone he dissappeared into his friends back garden and hid the bike ,after about fifteen mins you and your co biker rode straight into woods ,out came the biker and his mate again and off he went again haring around on it.they were laughing all over there faces .try coming round here at 9 oclock onwards and then see the scumbags that hang around

They are indeed in the real world, utilising some of the latest technology and methods in modern policing and are one of the best forces in the country too.
I think your comments were a little unfair, the mountain bike riding officers do a great job. At the time of you seeing them pursue the offending motorcycle riders, they had probably already called in the vehicle and it's location before giving chase and I'm sure you'd have been even more upset had you just seen them sitting there watching the motorcycle. Be fair.
If you are really concerned about these idiots on motorcycles, then why not do something about it? You can help by acting as a witness or by gathering evidence yourself such as video evidence etc. (always keeping safe though and out of sight etc.) or maybe if you and your neighbourhood are able to start some sort of neighbourhood watch like scheme?
If the community and the Police work together then these people have very little chance of hiding or getting away with what they are doing.
It seems to me there are certain areas of Sheffield that have these kids on motorbikes and they are left to get away with it. The Police do their best to catch them, but if the community worked better with them it would be a much easier job. There are plenty of people out there that won't be a witness or won't name people when they know they are committing these offences and they are very happy to criticise the Police for not catching them, what do they expect?
I am not saying you are one of these people, but give the Police some credit instead of criticising a very good and successful idea.

The message would have been relayed and you would have been well out of site doing this.
mountainbike 05-10-2005, 15:29 Lint,
sorry we didn't catch the culprit on this occasion not for want of trying though .
Many people say that they don't see the police on the estates. You proved them wrong !!!!
If you feel happy enough to pass the address onto the mountain bike cops discreetly we will do the rest- there's more than one way to skin a cat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you,ve ever heard the story about the hare and the tortoise ......... I rest my case
Catching motorbikes though isn't the only work that we do .
keep smiling
dont get me wrong i know that you have a hard job to do.i am currently in the process of trying to sort alot of problems that are happening on here with the council.but it takes such a long time and when things are happening around you and affecting your life to such an extent that you darent go out then it is past a joke .the bikers i can put up with it is the anti social behaviour of the gang of louts that are invading the estate as i say about 9,0clock onwards most nights and the gang gets bigger as the days go on
lalaland thanks for the critisism but i am in the process of doing that and collating the info but as i say when things are happening around you ,and only one other neighbour is doing anything ,then the stress is unbelievable and it takes so long

You seem to be in the unfortunate situation where you are willing to do something about the problems, but the rest of your community isn't. It's a shame, if there were more that took the time to work with the Police and together then problems like this would be cut dramatically.
Again, not criticising just curious now, have you approached other members of your neighbourhood to try and get them to get involved?
paulhagerty 05-10-2005, 15:52 i can't believe it, lol
there is one neighbour who is helping ,but the others are of the opinion that if they get involved it will backfire on them.others say they are fed up with it but dont do anything,i can only wait and see what the council will do.not knowing alot of there names will i suppose be the main problem and as usual they always have caps or hoods up
I think its good to see bobbies on bikes. I had a little play with a couple in the city centre, about a year ago. I was riding around the steps near the cathedral, and 2 bike coppers shouted.
Me and my friends were all semi-pro sponsored team riders at the time, and flee'd. They gave chase, but after we launched about 8ft in the air off the big flight of steps next to the cathedral, they stopped pursuing.
When we saw them later on, we got nothing more than a nod.
Keep up the good work fellas.
If I could get a career change, Copper on a bike is what i'd like to do.

If I could get a career change, Copper on a bike is what i'd like to do. You've missed the recruitment drive for this year, keep an eye on the South Yorkshire Police site around Autumn time 2006 for news of any more recruitment presentations and pick up an application pack when attending.;)
Cheers for the info, i'll keep an eye out.
