View Full Version : IYO ~ The Worst Vocalists Who Have Made It!
Following on from the best singers' thread, I thought I'd start this.....
At the moment, I can only think of two, but there are probably many more.
IMO:
Cilla Black
Mariah Carey
I'll come back with others when I think of them:wink:
They're nowhere near the bottom of the barrel when compared to the likes of 'Sonia (http://www.thebubbleburst.co.uk/sonia/old.jpg)' Ann :D
I choose
Mariah Carey
Rolf Harris
Classic Rock 03-10-2005, 09:55 Geri Halliwell
Mel C
Victoria Beckham
Mariah Carey (too many notes - tries too hard)
Ozzy Osbourne (sorry, I'm a rocker, but I think he's got a dreadful voice - he might belt the tunes out and be hugely successful but that Brummy accent keeps coming through)
Kelly Osbourne - talk about following in her father's footsteps!

Oh, I liked her. Thought she could sing. Party pop princess but she did have a voice.
Splodge_CRB 03-10-2005, 10:04 OY!!!! You can't knock Ozzy! :nono: :shakes:
Now if you'd said Celine Dion........

Can and did.
Oh yeah... Sea Lion Dion. Shudder.
How about Peter Andre?
StarSparkle 03-10-2005, 10:28 Mariah Carey :gag:
Celine Dion :gag:
Talk about torturing cats....
They both frazzle my nerves and give me a headache. The only comparable noises are violins being played particularly badly, and bagpipes.

I rate him right up there with Ronan Keating :gag: although he's not nasal like RK!
Classic Rock 03-10-2005, 10:51 Here's another....
That bird from Catatonia....forget her name, was it Cerys?
All sing along with a ridiculously strong Wesh accent, boyo.
Classic Rock 03-10-2005, 10:56 I'm on a roll here....
Mel C.
Her voice truly makes me cringe. Lovely warm personality but that voice....aaaarrrghhh!
The Cheeky girls, how terrible were they. Haven't heard from them for a bit though.

I know many people who would agree with you on this, though I have a bit of a soft spot for her voice.

Strange how these two feature on the greatest AND worst vocals..........:suspect: :suspect: :suspect:
Personally I think this thread is their rightful place. :hihi:
Ian Brown
Liam Gallagher
Bernard Sumner
Tim Burgess to name 4
sugarnspice 03-10-2005, 11:24 Geri Haliwell wins for me. Her voice makes me feel slightly ill. :gag: :shakes:

so, you're a BIG fan of Manchester bands, right? :D
Personally, I think music doesn't come any better than it does from Manchester bands
Each to their own, I guess
StarSparkle
Celine Dion and Whitney Huston...both on my sick list :gag:
Robbie Williams has got an awful voice.
sugarnspice 03-10-2005, 13:32 Elton John!!!!!! :gag: I just don't get it?????
You can't say that Mariah Carey doesn't have a good voice!!!
She does sing awful songs and she's majorly cringeworthy, but she has an amazing voice.
I think:
Ian Brown
Victoria Beckham
Geri Halliwell
and I don't rate the voices of Madonna or Britney Spears - they just choose songs that they don't need a good voice to pull off.
Pseudonym 03-10-2005, 17:00 IMO... Francis Albert Sinatra... 'Talks' most of his 'songs'... and was 'made' by the media and his connections, not by his 'talent'.
His mother used Mob connections to get him his first gig.
He was...
A raving sycophant towards the Mafia...
Egotistical in the extreme...
A thoroughly objectionable person in private life according to many reports.
But to give him his due, he fooled millions and still does, albeit posthumously! ;)
PuressenceUK 03-10-2005, 18:27 Chris "Overhyped Bobbins" Martin
I know I will cop the flak from Coldplay fans but his voice on high notes strains and it's like nails down a blackboard to my ears. Thankfully I am not alone in this assessment.
muddycoffee 03-10-2005, 18:58 Why has nobody mentioned Kylie?
Robbie Williams of course
All the spice girls, of whom all owe their recordings to electronic trickery making their weedy little voices thicker and in tune
Maria Cary does actually have a good voice but she sings in such a terrible way that most "right thinking people" think that she's awful
Liam Gallager - Not be long before he gets vocal nodes due to him singing from the throat.
Jeff Lynne from ELO - The guy has a very limited voice but he uses it so cleverly.
Cilla Black - probably the worst singer ever
Doctor Alban - Couldn't even sing in tune when he was miming on top of the pops, that was just so embarrasing
Crystal Waters - Why did she leave the NYPD wasn't she any good at that either?
Elton John in the last decade, before that he was ok but he sings like a comedy club singer now.
The little Scouse guy from "space", good idea mate but not really good enough.
Moby - Should have stuck to session singers. He sounds like he's mumbling while slumped in an armchair. Stand up that man.
Axl Rose is one I'm suprised no one has mentioned..
Or maybe thats just me :suspect:
Tubthump 03-10-2005, 19:20 Bit of a sacred cow this one, but Leonard Cohen really cannot sing. He is a great lyricist however.
Mick Hucknall ~ simply red....:gag: :gag: :gag:
muddycoffee 03-10-2005, 20:49 Usu Ndor - Sorry I don't know how to spell his name. Sounds like he is singing out of a huge nostril. He did that seven seconds with Nena Cherry. His voice is sooo grating it's unfair to call it a voice.
Yoko Ono - Just sounds like a confused cat
I won't have anyone slagging Linda McCartney (RIP). If you listen to some of the early wings albums she can sing very well and has a nice voice.
Billy Bragg - Nice bloke, Interesting Bloke, Great songwriter, Horrible voice
Bob Dylan - God Must have been having a joke when he designed his first Bob Dylan. To give someone such talent and leave him with such a limited voice. And as he is now older he sounds like an old bloke mumbling in a bathtub.
Tracy Chapman - Another Nasal Wonder.
Jimi Hendrix - The most talented and influencial artist and guitarist of the last 35 years but his voice isn't good at all. It took him a long time to get the confidence and a lot of persuasion before he took to the lead vocals. And he makes the best of it.

Buffy you don't get to be the first lady of sheffield Rock without noticing a thing or two about Sir Ozwald of Osbourne.
You are dead right of course. Dear Ozzy, the guy is a rock genius, a rock god, and far from the drugged up clown he likes to portray himself on his tv show the Flinstones.. Oh sorry the Simpsons, oh sorry third time lucky the Osbournes, he is shrewd, intellegent, creative and gifted. He is also kept himself in great shape for the last 15 or so years.
Yes he can technically sing well in the rock style, and he has a very good vocal range, but his voice is a bit whiney, well a lot whiney to be honest. But his best work is so great that it brings a tear to the eye of any rock aficionado and it doesn't really matter that much.
War Pigs + Diary of a madman + Paranoid = genius
northernboy 04-10-2005, 06:10 Heather Small (M People) - good grief woman, shut up!
Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals) - I really cannot stand this man's voice
Kevin Rowland was not exactly a bad singer, but I could never understand a single word he was singing!
Classic Rock 04-10-2005, 09:27 Disagree about Axl Rose - his voice is distinct rather than bad. There's a difference. He rocks!
It's Ozzy that's bad - whingie whiney voice....but his fame and those who will follow Sabbath to the grave tend will not see that.
Other dire rockers...while I'm on a roll include:
The Darkness (aaaarrrghhhhh)
Meatloaf - I guess I've just heard too many Karaoke singers crucify his stuff; also having seen him in concert a couple of times I've realised how bad he really is...singing bent double is never flattering nor good for the vocal range! That awful tremble he's got is really offputting.
Oh and he's not really rock but Phil Collins sounds strained and really in pain at times.
The Doors - yeah, yeah, a world famous amazing band but Jim Morrison's voice was dull as bleedin ditchwater
Tom Petty - brilliant tunes but another irritating voice.
jackthedog 04-10-2005, 09:40 Heather Smalls, Ian Brown, Jim Morrison, Robert Plant, Shaun Ryder, Axl Rose, Brian Johnson, that tosser from Muse...

Yoko Ono - Just sounds like a confused cat
Any more compliments and you'll be getting a personal invite to Yoko's latest 'Art' Exhibition.
She's done avant garde music which included the heartbeat of one of her children - whom she went on to miscarry. She's done slow mo videos of male sexual organs in state of arousal. She had a film called Bottoms which featured, yup, you guessed it.
She once stole one of George Harrison's chocolate digestive biscuits whilst the Fabs were recording The Beatles (aka double White). They didn't last much longer after that, did they? She even used to accompany John to the toilet or when he performed live, lie at his feet - in a black bag. There's also that great track on the Sometime In New York City album (Jam Rag) where she screams and wails at full pelt - for nearly 20 minutes.
She loved John so much that one of her album covers features John's blood-splattered spectacles, yes, the ones he was shot in.
Maybe the word 'confused' is wrong. Plain and utter stark-raving is nearer the mark.
And yet strangely, I respect the woman.
Classic Rock 04-10-2005, 09:44 Here's another for the pile.....
Bjork!
A strangled cat on acid.

I disagree. Sometimes Jim could sound average but give him a song like LA Woman and he nails it. :)

To be fair I don't think Leonard Cohen has ever claimed to be able to sing, and indeed not many other people would claim he can either, but somehow it doesn't matter.
I still reckon Ozzy can sing though... and what's wrong with a bit of Brummie accent? And Bjork can definitely sing too.
A lot of the others on here I'd agree with though, and to add another one I've never rated David Coverdale as a vocalist either (though even he was a damn sight better than Tony Ashton on the Paice Ashton Lord album).
If you want an uncontroversial one, that girl from the duo who got null points for us in the Eurovision Song Contest a couple of years ago - that was possibly the most dreadful bit of singing I've ever heard.

Ok, Brian Wilson's voice hasn't stuck with him as he's got older, but in his day he was a truly great singer. Him and his brothers produced some of the greatest harmonies ever put to record.
Oh and Metalman, I was a bit harsh on Leonard Cohen, and I've nothing usually against the talky style of vocals, it's just that, personally, i feel he takes a good song that he's written and drags it through the slough of despond until it's unbearable to listen to.

The Darkness (aaaarrrghhhhh)
Justin's liberal and frequent use of his soaring falsetto leaves him sounding like a cross between Roy"the big O" Orbison and a castrati opera singer with his family jewels in a jar on the windowsill. :o

Metalman.
I think you may be confusing the ability to sing with the quality of voice. This is of course two entirely different things.
Ozzy has a particularly whiney voice, but he can sing ok.
Whereas Maria Carey has a good voice but her singing technique is terrible.
Brian Johnson from AC/DC has a Foo**g terrible voice he sounds like he is straining on the lavvy, but it is interesting to compare him to Bon Scott who preceded him, who had less vocal range and sang some of his famous songs using only a few notes. But his voice had a more rounded and better tone to my ears. Brian has a bigger and higher vocal range, but I prefer Bon's voice. Although they both are great vocalists and are writers of great rockin' lyrics.
Axl Rose, before he went a bit mad, made use of different voices, he had a lower voice and a higher one too, a very useful technique, but he has unusual vocal equipment.
Sebastian Bach ex of Skid Row was an amazing vocalist, he went up to rediculously high notes, and had an incredible vocal range, with a reasonable sound. Which gave extra lift to some of the otherwise "ordinary songs" like "Youth gone wild"

Many heavy metal and rock singers need to sing extremely high notes, to overcome the guitar type frequencies which dominate the general sound of those types of music, and there are several secret tequniques which may work to achive this extension of range.
Often they are only partly succesful in that they can make fantastic records but not have the stamina to play a good live show for two hours.
I would tell you more secrets but I would have to kill you :hihi:  :heyhey:
