I'm in the process of replacing the plug on my mains adaptor (the end that plugs into the laptop) for my laptop (Compaq Presario 1700) as its become faulty. I snipped it off and toddled off to Maplin, somehow losing the plug on the way.

Anyway, I've bought a replacement (guessed the size, was lucky) but now have no idea which way (ie, what polarity) I should solder the plug back on.

The original plug had a little diagram stamped on it indicating which way round to do it.

Anyone any ideas? Does anyone with a laptop have the diagram stamped on it? Maybe they're all the same?

50% chance I'll get it wrong if I guess, but I reckon a 90% chance of it blowing up if the 50% chance goes the wrong way...

Not good odds.

Any help?

Ta.

Usually centre +ve, and just looking at the tech specs of some replacement power supplies they state they are centre +ve and work with the Presario 1700.

Looks the odds just went up, (or is that down  )

Compaqs usually have a little diagram both on the underside of the laptop and the PSU indicating polarity.
