View Full Version : Problem with Date on Printed Emails

I've just been trying to print out an email from the Local Government Ombudsman received in August and September 2004 but whenever I try to print out either of these emails they automatically backdate to the same timeframe BUT 2003 and NOT 2004.

I need to prove they wrote those emails to me in 2004 and not 2003. In fact thinking about it I rarely used email in those days so this is really very surprising.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how to fix it?

I've just done another check on these emails to find that the same thing happens when I display the email on to the screen.

If they've got the date setup incorrectly on their end then they come through as being sent at the incorrect date. I get it all the time, emails recieved here an hour before they are sent, I got one yesterday dated 2012! Don't think there's anything you can do, short of forging the headers but then there wouldn't be much point in proving it if you forge the proof!

Print them out, along with the 'message source' details which gives you information as to the time and date their postmaster sent it to your postmaster .

Hi alchresearch, that sounds a really good idea but how do I do that because they are no longer on the server and are now on this hard drive. Either I'm doing something seriously wrong which is a possibility or after having explored all of the options within Office 2003 it doesnt seem to give that level of fucntionality.

If you're in Outlook Express, then do this...

In Inbox (or whichever other folder they're in), rightclick the message & click properties.

In the box that opens, click the details tab at the top, then the "message source" button.

That's what you need...

Well it becomes interesting interestinger. Unfortunately it isnt in Outlook Express but Microsoft Outlook 2003 and I cant seem to access the message source stuff from postmaster to postmaster.
What I was able to obtain from message properties was:

Sent: 8 September 2003;
Received: 13 August 2004

Couldnt find the stuff you referred to in MS Outlook 2003. have they removed the facility to access the relevant postmater source code?

No, I know it's somewhere else in Outlook (not Express) but I can't remember how to get to it. The two different dates just mean that 1 of the 2 mail servers have got the date & time set wrong...

Outlook does have a slightly odd way of viewing the full headers - unless there's an easier way I've missed! :) Double-click on the message to open it up in a separate window, then View > Options...

Rich I've been through everything including that as well without any joy.

When you receive an e-mail message in Outlook 2003, Outlook normally displays the e-mail's sender, recipient, date/time of message sent, subject, etc., the basic information. However, e-mail addresses can be forged, and if you receive suspected spam messages, it may be beneficial to view the e-mail's routing information to help determine which computer or network actually sent the message.

1. Right-click on a suspect message.
2. Choose "Options" from the popup menu.
3. Look for the section "Internet headers". Depending on the e-mail, you should see more detailed routing information, such as when and where the e-mail was received on each network, SMTP message IDs, MIME type information, and more.

There are a lot of websites with a range of instructions (http://www.google.com/search?&q=view%20headers%20outlook%202003). As I don't have outlook 2003 I can't confirm they work, but they should help.

Rich
I had a brainwave and found it in my OUtlook Express deleted files folder which very thankfully I have never done anything about and it's showing exactly the same stuff as in Outlook 2003 so followed directions as above which suggests their server is set up with the wrong date. So how do I prove they sent those emails on the date which I received it?

I am ecstatic that the Uni actively discourages use of Outlook 2003 because I'd never have recovered that stuff otherwise.
