Who living there thinks it can develop into a better place to live?.. Do you think it already is?

Having lived here all my life, I have seen Wincobank change from being a little 'village' with loads of shops into what it is today. The council made the mistake in the early 70's of turning our 'playing field' Maycocks into the estate that stands there today. As I remember, our understanding was that it was supposed to be flats for the elderly and bungalows for disabled. Wincobank has always had bad press, but having lived here I know its ok. The local builder Eric Moore has plans to build lots more private dwellings, so hopefully we will see Wincobank become a better place to live.
We have got one of the best positions in Sheffield. J34 of the M1, Meadowhall within walking distance, tram, train and bus station.

Yes Anj, I lived there (Standon Road) before we moved up to Leeds. I remember just off our back garden was the fabulous Woolley Wood and Concord Park golf course. We spent many a happy hour on our cardboard grass slides on the slopes up there. I remember there was so much open space around the 'village' then, Maycocks field, the orchard at the top with the 'big' house, the lovely walks to Ecclesfield and up to Thorpe Hesley. We kids practically lived out of doors then and were never bored! I've been back since moving back down from Leeds and seen the estate they built on Fife Street - monstrous! Anyway I'll be back to walk in Woolley Wood when the bluebells are out - sheer heaven!

was wonderin about the post office and pub at the bottom of Newman rd, would they have been apart of old village?

Trishtee

Yes they were. There were terraced houses adjoining the pub right down to the bottom and the same on the other side. Most of these were lovely little shops. There was Mrs Pegg the Drapers, Mr Chapman the cobbler, Harrisons fruit & veg, I think there were two or three butchers & cold meat shops, Co-op Chemist I think, & loads of others. But they knocked 'em down and left the rubble instead. On Fife Street you had the Co-op Drapers where you got all your clothes and across the road was the Co-op Grocery. You never had to leave the village in those days! Wincobank proper finished at Barrow Road and then after that I think it became Brightside. At the top end it finished at Newman Road. OOh 'ec, showing my age now!!!

realy?, wow it sure was an hive of activity.. on top of that I suppose the church on Newman rd with it's vicerage in the grounds at the end of Eccles st was the icing on the cake?

Trishtee

The church was well attended right enough but the thing I remember most of all was those huge gas tanks hovering over the place. As I remember they used to go down slowly during the week and then they filled up on a Friday. When that happened we couldn't get very good TV reception. I always imagined they would blow up one day and obliterate us all. They're still there but I don't know if they fill up and empty like they used to - horrible things.

yeah Trish, those dame gas tanks still go up & down pending on useage..

Wow Trishtee! its nice to hear someone else remembers how Wincobank used to be. I remember Harrisons fruit shop, The shop we used to call the Pork Pie shop just up from there, the cobblers, the butchers next door in what seemed to be a big shed - complete with sawdust on the floor. The co-op habberdashery shop on Fife St with their butchers next door and the co-op grocery shop across the road before it turned self service. Oglesbee's fruit shop and of course Sullivans chip Shop. We also had great fun in the summers sliding down the steep hill in Hinde House School field on cardboard boxes.
The Bluebells in the woods are as beautiful as ever, so make sure you go next spring and have a look.

Yes Anj, I remember it with such affection and always will, however it develops. I think most people have a love for the place where they grew up and had such happy times as children - you hear it so much, "we had nowt but god we were happy" - used to be from the old people but I guess I've become one now!!!

Trekker,
What do you think about living in Wincobank at the moment? I am interested to hear what someone else who has come into the area recently thinks.

I live in lower Wincobank too, the developments on Merton Lane are across the road from me. They look really good and are being snapped up almost as soon as they're available, which proves its becoming more desirable. Unfortunately, we'll be moving soon, so I don't think we'll get to see it improve further.

Remember all the old places pre the council estate. as people have aid it was originally for old folk and indeed my gran lived in one of the flats on Stanwell for 15 years bless her.

Bad news about Wincobank & Blackburn WMC heard it might be closing.............anyone else heard ???

Thanks for the piccies Tara. That's how I remember Wincobank as a child. I have also heard that Wincobank WMC is closing down and that the land is to be developed into more private housing which can only be good news for the area. the day's of Working Men's clubs being peoples social outlet are long gone and the club at the moment is just an eyesore. My son had his 18th in there last year (only because it was within staggering distance!) and the toilets were disgusting. I had been to a party a couple of months previously and there wasn't even a light bulb in there!

Years overdue!

Moore has built some quality houses in Wincobank and I'm sure he'll do the same there.

Pity he can't do anything about the area where Maycocks' field was!
