View Full Version : How can I get rid of my sweet tooth ?
pattricia 02-10-2005, 09:21 Seriously you guys, have you any tips on how I can get rid of my sweet tooth. It really bothers me,as I know sugar is bad for your teeth and your weight. Im alright for a bit, eat healthily, and cut it out, drink freshly pressed juices, and feel great. Then after a few weeks, I start and feel low in sugar, and have to have something sweet. Pastry, chocolate anything sweet. All the time Im eating it,I feel guilty, cos I know its not good for me,but its like a drug. This weekend Ive bought, a large egg custard tart, 2 swiss rolls, and 3 large bars of chocolate! I cant enjoy them really when Im eating them, but I feel a craving for them.As Im a pensioner, I think, ****** it,might as well enjoy myself, might be dead next year, but I would seriously like to stop it. Any tips ?:help:
Sorry - not really. I have the same problem. I have found that if I give it up for a long time I don't really crave it anymore but it's that initial lack of will power
Unless, have you tried really sweet and fruity yoghurts? Sometimes if I'm craving something sweet I'll have a muller fruit corner or something similar - they're not low in fat and not the best for your health but I can only assume they're better than chocolate!

Lottie x Yes, Lotti, I eat yoghurts. all the time, but they are nearly all full of sugar. They may be fat free, but not sugar free ! Also opposite to you, the longer I go without something sweet, the worse I crave them. There aught to be somewhere like Alcholics annonymous for us like "Sugar Cravers Help Club".

Sugar cravings can be terrible. I was always eating sweet stuff at one point. I seem to have moved on to savoury and spicy things now though. But do love a sugar boost now and then.
Zenmaster 02-10-2005, 10:42 I used to have a very sweet tooth. I don't eat so much chocolate anymore, but still love sugary coffee.
I think the key here is moderation. Don't cut it out completely, but have a particular time of the week, say at the weekend that is treat time. But then the trick is not to go mad. I won't eat chocolate all week, then on a Saturday I have maybe one or two bars and thats it for the week. Well it works for me.
I mean last year I ate chocolate everyday because of work.
I stopped it tho after I had several tests and my glucose levels were slightly high. But now I'd much rather tuck into a delicious cheese sandwich or something.
I hope you find something that works for you.
Kristian 02-10-2005, 11:31 Pattricia stop beating yourself up! A bit of what you fancy does you good!
As long as you're not resembling Claire Rayner then you enjoy your sweet treats!
If you start eating really bitter things, and get used to them, it makes you like sweet foods less... I find.
Can I recommend sugar free sweets? You can con yourself that you're indulging yourself, but you're actually looking after your teeth instead (xylitol- the artificial sweetener in them- actually suppresses plaque). Providing you don't eat a whole packet at a time you can eat as many as you like. Sula even make a sugar free butterscotch now- yummy.
You can also have sugar free jelly with fruit as a dessert, and fresh dates taste like they are the most indulgent treat but are actually really good for you.
But you need to undestand that fretting about eating the sweet stuff probably does you more damage than eating the sweet stuff does, so give yourself a break.
sugarnspice 02-10-2005, 11:49 I'm terrible at being sensible and healthy to be honest.
If I fancy a bit of chocolate - I eat it. Simple as that. I'm not a calorie counter sort of girl. I never ever feel guilt about it either.
I would genuinely rather be satisfied and happy and plump around the edges than "the perfect size" and miserable.
That's just me and most women may disagree. But if I want some treats, I have them. No worries.

Sula sweets are really nice, I recommend them too! I believe they can have a laxative effect though if you eat too many! We don't want any accidents! :D

They certainly do, I tried having their lollies as an aid to giving up smoking (the idea being that the physical act of having a lolly would mimic the physical act of having a cig in my mouth) and I was on the pot for days and this got me so stressed I had a cigarette!
I think the point above about moderation is the way to go - rather than cutting it out completely, allow yourself a treat each day. While my knowledge of dieting is limited to say the least, I believe that this is part of some of them - the logic being that if you try denying yourself all the time you will end up craving what you 'can't'/'shouldn't' have.
I would just like to share with you that I am eating bourbon biscuits while reading this ...
