View Full Version : Music for the occasion (or not)

Music makes the moment special, or so they say. But sometimes the reverse is true. Take last night as a case in point.

We were in Morrisons at Hillsborough and had had a meal and drink before shopping. We'd found everything we wanted (if only!) and selected a short queue. The queue moved through the checkout at a moderate pace, but then seemed to stop. At this point I was aware of some discomfort in my bladder and resolved to use the little boys' room at my earliest convenience.
At this point I became conscious that the store tannoy was rendering some singer's words: "I wannabe your number one."

Another occasion, a good few years ago, was at a family wedding when the florist was behind with her work, causing the bride's departure to be considerably delayed. This wedding was not in Sheffield - not that that is relevant to the tale, but it may help Sheffield Florists who are afraid that I'm maligning them - but somewhere down south. All the guests were in church awaiting the bride's arrival and to while away the time the organist was performing his repertoire.
A select few of us were aware of the reason for the delay and when we heard the organist playing "Edelweiss" from "The Sound of Music" we could see the funny side.

Or take the occasion last year when I was awaiting minor surgery at a local hospital. I suppose most people are apprehensive before operations, but to ease things they put on a CD of "relaxing Classics" - the adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony. All I could think of was that it had been used in the film "Death in Venice".
