meumeu77 30-09-2005, 10:57 PM Hello,
am househunting and was wondering whether Shiregreen is ok or not? How about Shirecliff and Wincobank?
I've heard bad stuff about them but would like to have a second opinion (or more!). Ta.
:D
Yellowrose 30-09-2005, 11:11 PM Well, previously I would have said no. But thats an outsiders view. Earlier in the year I made an ebay purchase and had to collect it from Shiregreen. Cant remember the street, but it was a small quiet leafy little road, and the house had been done up a treat. I would go and judge for yourself. Make plenty of visits at different times of day. Hopefully someone who lives there will post on here.
Yellowrose 30-09-2005, 11:13 PM Most of Wincobank isnt bad (Jenkin Road area). Steep hill though! I used to live in the Jenkin Road area when I first came to Sheffield and it was quite nice really, never had any trouble. But we are talking 25 years ago. Most of the houses around Jenkin Rd are privately owned, so presumably they will have been looked after.
meumeu77 30-09-2005, 11:15 PM Thanks Alysonpeach. The only problem is I'm not living in Sheffield at the moment and everytime I find a house I like on t'internet, hubby says: "no it's too rough".
I don't mind living in a rough area if the street the house is on is fine!
Anyway, thanks again.
jayjay 30-09-2005, 11:26 PM Your best bet is to post the street name and see what response to that you get .
Can help with most of Shiregreen and some of Wincobank
Good luck

Hi Jayjay,
Shiregreen = Perkyn Rd and Beck Rd
Wincobank = Beacon Close and Sandstone Rd.
Thanks.
Yellowrose 30-09-2005, 11:55 PM Both Beacon Road and Sandstone used to be fine.
Yellowrose 30-09-2005, 11:58 PM Sorry Beacon Close that should be. We lived on Jenkin Avenue and then Ridge View Drive. They were both nice.
Good luck. Its hard to get on the property ladder isnt it? I jumped off it a few years ago because of divorce and ill health. I cant get back on it now and I am resigned to renting now.

Depends what part of Shiregreen you want to live in? i've lived here 39 years without trouble :)
meumeu77 01-10-2005, 12:09 PM thanks guys for your replies.
I'm sorry to hear that Alysonpeach and yes it is hard for us to get on property ladder because we rely mainly on my wage (my hubby's not qualified).
Jayjay I'll PM you.
Thank you.
nezona 02-10-2005, 10:09 PM I was really blessed with buying a house here, bought a three bedroom semi for £28k it is now worth £89k..dont understand how people can afford to buy house these days...couldnt be a first time buyer now.
nezona 02-10-2005, 10:12 PM oh yeah on the subject of Shiregreen, ive lived here for 30 yrs and most people say its a dive, which I quite agree, Unfortunately there is a wealth of the hoody culture here, and it also one of the most illiterate places in Sheffield, thats why a lot of training providers offer free training, due to the lack of skilled people living in the area.
If you keep yourself to yourself, you dont have any problems, but dont buy too muvh nice stuff, because it will probably be pinched.
Would love to leave here but couldnt afford to live anywhere else.
Weazel2006 23-10-2005, 05:00 PM I agree with keeping yourself to yourself. It has the downside of the usual chav invasion forces but its more intimidating than anything else.
The shop staff are also pleasant and if its near hartley brook then you could just go round in your slippers lol.
Its not the worst or the best area its a mix of good and bad like anywhere else but you can do worse.
dongle 24-10-2005, 01:47 PM if your thinking of buying in wincobank we have just put ours on the market its a 3 bed semi on sandstone road priced at £94,950
meumeu77 25-10-2005, 03:09 PM do you know what Oaks Fold Rd is like please?
And Pear tree Rd?
We're coming to view some houses on Thursday and don't want to waste our time.
Ta.
pedro1 29-10-2005, 04:36 PM I was born on the shiregreen opposite perkin road, that`s a really nice quite road. Beck road used to be nice when i was younger but is quite rowdy and run down. I`d recomend living on the shiregreen but i`m biased as that`s where i live now.
meumeu77 29-10-2005, 04:50 PM well thanks for your reply but my husband and I were really put off by what we saw and even though I don't want to upset those who live there, we've decided it's not for us because we're not tough enough.
We went to view 4 different houses in the area and were not impressed with:
- racer boys driving dead fast
- hoodies at every street corner
- the owner of a house we saw had a giant TV screen and just before we left her house after viewing it, she said "oh and we do have CCTV because you never know"...
It was like something out of a comedy sketch. We just could not believe it.
But I'm sure some people are fine living there but as I said
I don't feel I'm tough enough.
