As you pass the Ball Inn and plummet down Mytle Road towards Heeley Bottom, there are four bright white lights (definitely newish) to the left and further up from the Hallamshire Hospital.

It's difficult to tell exactly where thay are located, but I would guess at somewhere near Crosspool.

Anyone know what they are?

i know what lights you mean - but they definitely arent new. If i look out my velux window (north facing) from the top of banner cross/brincliffe area - i have seen them for at least 2 years.

Could it be some sort of astroturf or something like that - it may well be part of that school that is located on the main road which links broomhill to crosspool.

Yes they could be some sort of floodlit sport's facilities. What about those blue lights somewhere over town. They are on some tall building by the look of it.

Yes, I know that one, it's next to the blood place where my wife works, but there is another one in town.

If you're looking at Crosspool, the lights are probably Sandygate, home of Hallam Football Club

I see these lights as I live in S11, They are the Hallamshire groung at the top or coldwell lane. I have been aware for at least 2 years that they are there.

Thanks, so now I know. But why are they are on seemingly every night?

They could be the lights on the University sports ground opposite Western Park hospital.
Or they could be the lights that were fitted to the astroturf pitches at Tapton and King Edwards school, they will have been there for 2 years now. Both schools were rebuilt 2 years ago on a PFI scheme and are now let out by the company that runs the school buildings outside of school hours and they do get used all the time.
Also at Crosspool there is Coldwell Lane sports field and Hallam Football Club but i don't think they have lights up on them. Please correct me if i am wrong.
