Hi,
I'm looking to make a drastic career change to become an electrician but am struggling to find what the most appropriate and required qualifications are that I need. Some companies say that you can train whilst still holding down your current job but once I speak to them, they reveal that this isn't actually the case.

I wondered whether becoming a trainee electrician would be an option but I have no experience, but I do learn fast. I'm not sure however, how much something like this would pay for a trainee.

Due to paying a mortgage on my own, I can't afford to drop much in wages but any suggestions that people have would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Hi,
The minimum requierd qualification you need to be an electrician is:

*Level 1-2-3 electrical installation.
*Level 3 BS7671.
This is a two years course.

If you looking to be an approved electician you need above that:
*2361 inspection and testing
*NIECC card
*JIB card

Try and find a sparky that will take you on as an apprentice and get you through college. That's easier said than done though especially if your older than your average school leaver etc. - use your initiative, ask if you can do a couple of works for free or something - gives you a chance to make them realise you can be an asset and also gives you a chance to see if it's really the life for you.
