Chinese Fondue and dumpling house.
162 London Rd
Sheffield
S2 4LT

Ever fancied coming on a forum foodie meet but felt too scared to make that first move? Ever wanted to put a face to a forum username or get to know someone a little better while being surrounded by food, laughter and a warm atmosphere? Then this might just be for you!

It's always great to welcome people - old and new. So, whether you're a familiar face or a complete newbie, if you're at a loose end that night, why not give it a try?

We're a warm, friendly and welcoming bunch, so don't think you'll be sat on your own, staring at the walls. ;)

There are a couple of reviews for JABU here (http://www.thestar.co.uk/food/FOOD-REVIEW--Jabu-162.6241739.jp) and here. (http://www.sheffield-eating.com/33060.htm)

I strongly recommend that you read the reviews as they give insight into how things work around there.

If you wish to bring your own wine, there is a corkage charge of £2.00 per table which is more than reasonable

I normally try a place out before arranging a foodie meet as I like to ensure quality, but I've been told about this place so many times that I thought I'd take a chance. Hope it doesn't disappoint!

The table is booked for 8pm and I'll confirm final numbers a couple of days before.

If you want in, just drop me a PM. :)

*Just a couple of polite requests.

Firstly, please take responsibility in terms of paying for whatever you eat/any service charge if appt. We don't want to be left paying someone else's bill.

Secondly, No avoidable last minute cancellations/no shows please. I won't appreciate it and the restaurant certainly won't.

cool!

as a new-ish sheffielder with only a handful of connections up here, as well as a foodie, this sounds great! i'll see if i can clear it with my missus (so long as you don't mind a loudmouthed southerner coming along with a bottle of rioja.... :D)

why don't you keep this thread active and remind people days before event (so that you confirm booking) and we can confirm attendance?!
i'd love to try the fondue place, the steam inside the windows in winter is something to be envied about!

I always plan foodie meets a few weeks in advance to allow people to make plans. The thread will probably bubble away nicely till then anyway, but yeah, I'll refresh it a few days before the event. :)

Hope you can make it.

Thanks for the message, Stagey; Jabu is a great choice! I've been a bit of an absentee on the forums until recently; lots going on. Pencil me in as a yes because I've sinced moved to the middle of Sheffield and now live just a couple of minutes walk from Jabu. I'm not sure how work commitments are going to unfold in the meantime though, so I'll let you know if it changes.

Just re-checked my inbox, and saw your message, Stagey!

Like many on here, I'm in new job territory, but I've already started, and now know that I can get back in time; and as it's after payday, my finances will have recovered from having to buy motor insurance for the first time in years, so count me in please!

I'm a defo now Stagey.

Just a few pointers from when my friends went the other week.

The pot is regardless of the party size (2-20!) so dependant on numbers might be worth specifying doing as two parties so we get more choice of pots/sauces.

My friends didn't do this, were in a 14ish and only had the one pot between them all(it's split into two). 3 people were veggies so they had to keep one side veg and therefore the meat all went into other pot so although you got to choose what you put in, it really was a bit mish mash when it came out. But they said it was delicious, just this would have improved their experience.

So also it might be worthwhile finding out who is veggie, pescatarian, and full monty.

I'm veggie. :D

:hihi::hihi:

Basically, I think you get one pot per table. There's a divider in the middle so you can put veg in one side and meat/fish in the other. Only thing with this is, for you to get the food YOU chose back, you'd all need to cook your own items separately - so it would be easier if we had a few pots on the table.

At least, that's what I think.....

I get it - basically, it will be to our advantage if we book in as two or three smaller, separate groups on the night. Otherwise, we will ALL be sat around sharing one pan of soup which will create problems for the veggies.

Or stare at them continuously while they're bubbling in the pot to ensure no unfortunate mix-ups. I'd hate to get my button mushroom replaced with a pig's nad or something.

On second thoughts, continuously staring at vegetables might look a bit 'special'. I'll bring my marker pen. :D

Hiya Stagey

Many thanks for the personal invite. I've left it to the last minute to reply as I've not wanted to confirm and then possibly have to cancel.

This date coincides with full council meeting and I now know that when the council meeting concludes, I'm having to go straight to another meeting, alas! :(

Have an enjoyable meal and a great time everyone!

Yeah sorry about that again. It's just so difficult with quiet, reserved people like Edna and Stagey about. This image you have of them getting up and dancing on the tables is a real let down when you meet them in real life.

:D

Can someone please tell me the name of the fish that came in the long shell? It looked squid-like, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called! :help:

I wasn't there but I'm guessing it was razor clam. I know for a fact they have it on their menu too.

it was definitely the razor clam - and lovely it was too (just wish we had ordered a few more!).

oh and give a wave to your fella - i'd be delighted to bore him to tears about the intricacies of designing packaging over a few beers next time there's a social gathering! :D

mmmm, thinking about razor clams again now... want more!!!

This one happened last year but I'm sure Stagey will organise another one soon enough. Keep your eyes open and I'll give you a heads up if he does :)

TBH Edna, I rarely spend any time here these days.

If you want to organise something, be my guest.
