Hi there,

Just a heads up on this event for this Saturday (and others), if you are interested in beekeeping then this is the one for you - find out if working with bees is for you, hand on!

http://www.buzzy-work.co.uk/sheffield_beekeeping_course.html

(surprise guests this Saturday so dont hang around in booking!)

Urban Beekeeping Experience
(2hrs session)
Weston Park Museum/Sheffield
£30.00 per person

You will get a practical introduction into the world of bees and beekeeping and look at the various tasks a beginner beekeeper needs to master. You will get to see a Beehaus as well as other hives and get to know if beekeeping is really for you. While the event is aimed at newcomers, it will be tailored to the audience on the day.

You will learn some of basic beekeeping skills including:

•Examine hive parts and its structure (inc. the BeeHaus).
•Using a bee suit, a smoker, and the hive tool.
•Open a hive and remove frames for inspection.
•Identify castes of the honeybee (queen, worker and drones)
•How to find the queen and recognise brood and honey
•Why disease management is so important.

Veils (bee suits) will be provided but please bring a pair of rubber gloves (kitchen type) and wellington boots as we plan to examine at least two hives during the session. Course attendees should also bring a notebook and pen for note taking. The main session is very much weather dependent as we do plan to spend 50% of the time on the hives (bees don't like rain either), please bring waterproofs if it is raining as we will still visit the apiary area.
