Has anyone, like me, got an unusual phobia?

Mine is maps. Relief maps to be precise. The very thought of opening an atlas up gives me the creeps in case I find myelf on a page that contains a dreaded relief map.

Political maps provoke a little anxiety, but I can just about cope.

Strangely, street maps do not bother me in the slightest. I could happily flick through a Sheffield A-Z and suffer no ill-effects from the experience.

Isn't it strange?

I have a large relief map of the Peak District on my kitchen wall.

Wanna come round for lunch Sam?

I have one of those - a 3D relief map of the entire North West of England, from Worksop in the bottom right to Lancaster in the top left. It contains most if not all of Yorkshire, so I can touch/feel at a glance where all the hills are! Champyin!

I was given it a a gift and it's (c) Oxford University Press 1964 so it doesn't show any motorways  Sorry to take this thread off topic, but I'd like to know where I can get an updated relief map.

Anyway, back to the thread, as I child I had a phobia of steel pins and sewing needles. I hated looking into a sewing box, just in case one popped out and jabbed me in the eye.

My youngest child (13 months old) is terrified of a certain plastic flower in our living room. He'll stare at it for ages, but pass the flower to him and he'll do a runner.

A friend of mine has a phobia of buttons.

Not the popper type that some cheap shirts or denim shirts have; but the real four hole button types.

Cant stand em, and it makes her feel sick.

FREAK!

I'm absolutely terrified of moths (dunno whether this is unusual or not). Sometimes it can be quite embarrasing cos I totally freak out and sometimes cry if I spot one.

I know that really they can't hurt me but when I see them my brain flips and I imagine that if it comes near my face it might actually be able to kill me. However, I am now receiving medication and psychotherapy regarding this and have found my new padded walls a great help! (That bit was a joke....I'm not really mad, well not completely anyway!).

Well ... not so much now ... but as a child I would never wear anything with buttons on ... zippers rule !!!

Freaky maybe, but not uncommon. A search reveals there's even a name for it: praepilaphobia.

Mine is cats,I hate it when the jump on your lap and do that stomping thing with their paws (whats that all about).
Then when they realise you dont like them, the lay down on your lap.
Just as you think you are over the worst, they begin to purr and vibrate, then comes the grand finale, you move and the claws sink right into you.

makes me shudder

The pedants on this forum will probably point out that it was in fact cotton in the film/book, albeit chocolate coated, but in its raw state cotton and cotton wool are very similar.

Yes, they're each as bad as the other...and even the thought of chocolate coating isn't going to stop my teeth being on edge for days now.
T-shirts, sheets, anything like that, put it near your mouth and eeeeewwwww!!!!
But cotton wool is worse. I once worked in a chemists and my boss loved to torture me by making me price all the bags of cotton wool. Any bottles of tablets or vitamins with cotton wool in the top have to be dealt with by my patient partner. I literally cannot touch the stuff.
I say again: EEEEWWWWW!

It's a common one, but I'm terrified of spiders. Only the big ones, the smaller sort don't bother me. I can't even stay in the same room as one. I've had to sleep in the living room sometimes 'cos one of the spindly little buggers has got into my bedroom.

I seem to have lots of phobias, I think they all related to something that must have happened that I can't remember.

I hate lifts. absolutly hate them but the wierd thing is I live in a tower block and for the first 2 years of living here I used to walk up and down 14 flights of stairs every single day. One day I decided to brave it and get in the lift. Now I get in the lift all the time but the odd thing is I will only go in my lift, I wont go in any other :D I'm crazy.

Also I don't like small rooms, hate aeroplanes but I have to brave them if I want a good holiday.

I despise cable cars and there's no way anyone could get me in one of those.

I don't like things that fly, ie moths, butterflys etc...I especially hate Bees and wasps just looking at them makes me want to be sick, they are vile! All furry and urghhhh

That's all for now, I'm sure I'll think of more.

I have a fear of people walking on paving flags in socks, the noise goes straight through me and i can almost feel it. I first noticed this when i was little and I had a bike, if i was "fixing" it and got oil on the patio, my dad would make me rub it off with an old rag.

Crikey, what a list I've read.
I shall add my freaking out about.... holes!
I don't think I can explain this very well but here goes....
Imagine *cringe* a lot of holes *shudder* like a natural sponge or like a real close up of your pores *Urrrghhh!*
Be it big, small, close or distant it freaks me soooo much.
The spice monster in Dune really freaks me out.
I used to have a bizarre issue with spontaneous combustion as a child but I made myself read about it and decided I'm not scared anymore. I was reminded of it by a previous thread.

Time to resurrect an old thread! Yeay!

Okay, my phobias are pretty wierd I have to admit, but I'm deadly serious about them. They are all completely irrational, but I can't deal with them:

Lard and Dripping. It makes me heave, and as a younger chap, I used to be obsessed for checking the ingredients labels for the mention; even things like jam and tins of peas!
Bridges. Can't drive over them especially if they cross water. I try to hold my breath!
Dwarves and Midgets. I've been known to cross the road to avoid them. I once sat in the pub at lunchtime with my colleagues, and there was a dwarf lady sat across the room; I couldn't eat my chips. This is awful because clearly they can't help it, they just really frighten me.
Pigeons. They always fly towards me. Have you ever seen a 6ft 6 man screaming on Fargate? That was probably me!

Anyone share these?

I know, my phobias seem completely rational to me too,

1) Lollypop sticks, especially pulling them through your teeth.
2) Catapillars and anything else maggoty looking (nasty accident when fishing caused this phobia)
3) Slugs
4) Heights (though I am working on this one)

You would be scared of it if you came across a camel spider in Iraq during the daytime! They don't like the sunlight, so they follow your shadow no matter how fast you run!! And they're BIG!!!

I've aways had a phobia of going down stairs. Not esculators just a normal flight of stairs. I fear I will fall and break my leg or worse still my neck or back. I always go down with caution.
Funny thing is, I fell down my attic stairs on Christmas eve and ended up on crutches. I hurt my leg badly, bruised my ribs, cut my leg open but all in all was lucky I didn't kill myself. No broken bones! It was the one time I wasn't cautious when going down the stairs.

You would think that facing my fear, literally, would help but it hasn't! Still phobic. Not scared of heights just stairs. They can be tall or just a few, doesn't matter. Is there a name for this?

I've got an irrational phobia of sticky labels.
It's the lack of control that you get when you've got one stuck to you and can't get it off.

It stems back to when I was a toddler and I got one stuck to the roof of my mouth. Makes me gippy to think about it.

I thought my phobia was unique, until I read that the ginger one out of Girls Aloud also has the same fear.

This thing is, kids at my son's school get stickers when they've been good. It's unbearable when he comes home covered in stickers.

A bloke I work with breaks out in sweat every time he passes piccalilli.

I am the same i have fallen up & down stairs so many times now that it is beginning to become a phobia... if i see alot of steps in front of me i get really nervous... going up isnt so bad its the walking down... Where i am a little on edge about the stairs my eyes seem to play tricks on me and i end up mis-judging the step... hence why i fall/trip down them... seems so crazy... but true :?

Its horrible...

It is strange how other people's phobia's can sound so funny and daft... but if we're the sufferer its no Joke!

I never thought i would see the day when i had a really pathetic phobia... Yeah you will laugh dont worry... but this is serious for me...

Vibrating cuddly toys... I hate them... My friends little girl had a vibrating cuddly elmo... she kept throwing it at me i had to nudge it to the floor... I cant stand them they make me cringe...

My sister has a Mad Cow that does the same shakes etc... ewww i can feel myself cringing now (fingers going all weird on me... ) Its stupid... i even admit its a really silly phobia... i picked up a little snowman once... had a button on it 'press here' so i did... argh!!! it started shaking an vibrating... threw it down straight away... :help:

Couldnt stand my phone on vibrate at one point got used to that now tho...

Please no jokes... Remember: your phobia is serious to you so have repsect for others no mater how daft :)

Bridges, especially ones with water underneath, if i'm alone I try and get as far away from the edge as I can and refuse to look over at the water. If i'm with somebody, I do the same, but also hold onto them, as if they'll keep me safe if it collapses :loopy:

I've always had a problem with this, Angel. When I'm above any large body of water I can feel it trying to pull me in. Now I think about it, it really only happens with slowish-moving water like the sea or a big lake - doesn't seem to happen with fast-flowing rivers. It's like the water is literally trying to hypnotise me and drag me into it. Horrible.

On one family holiday when I was a kid, we drove along the road by Loch Ness for a while, and I was transfixed by it. I couldn't tear my eyes away from it I found it so terrifying. It was so black and so deep I felt it wanted to pull me down into those depths. S**** the Loch Ness Monster, I was scared of the Loch!!

Also as a small child, I had a phobia about my bedroom curtains. They were truly hideous, sort of green/grey with huge brown flowers :gag: Late at night if I couldn't sleep I'd find myself staring at them, and then I'd get the optical illusion that the flowers were moving towards me, intent on doing me some harm. Weird, and really scary. I'd hide my face under the blankets, then I'd be ok.

I told my Dad about this quite recently, and he was horrified I'd been so scared of the curtains. Apparently Mum had spent ages choosing them for me, and she thought they were lovely!! :help:

Sounds exactly the same thing my Mum suffers from... glad it wasnt passed on as it sounds really scary...

The only thing i was scared of in my room was the underneath of my bed... i had to jump onto my bed at night as i thought something would grab hold of my ankles an drag me under... i think most kiddies suffer from this... :? not nice...

I hated going out of the living room having to go upstairs to the loo in the dim light... i used to run down stairs as fast as i could incase something came out of one of the bedrooms an started chasing me.

What wild imaginations kids have huh!

I have a phobia about (or more accurately an intense dislike of) chewing gum. I hate the sight and smell of it, including the masticating jaws of football managers. I can't understand why it is regarded as permissable to spit it onto the streets, turning our pavements into eyesores. I think in Singapore it is banned. they have the right idea. Perhaps I ought to emigrate to Singapore.

i like this thread :)

I too I have a fear of escalators, but i can't stand going up them - going down them isn't too bad. But up? I panic, can't breath, its horrible. The ones in huge department stores are worst - those where you can see the other escalators going down, ergh all that space between the escalator & the wall, its just horrible even thinking about it.
I used to live in London and used the tubes all the time, i had to really syke myself up before getting on the escalator! Its so bad i lean forward, until i'm practically sitting on the floor lol! Yes, i do get strange looks!

I also hate stairs with gaps between them (only going up tho) - i can't explain it, but i feel sick & dizzy when i go near them. And glass lifts have this affect too!

Same here i hate it when i can see a long way down i think its something to do with me being scared of heights...

Pauly & me went out to Derbyshire for our weekly walk on the rocks... this week we went further than last... went climbing up this rock only for me to see through a gap an noticed how high up i was... thats was it for me... i froze there an then on the spot... Pauly went up without me... as he came back down he had to kinda prise me away from the rock behind me... It was horrible... If i hadnt have seen the distance i would have been fine... :)

Surprised this one hasn't been mentioned already - Snakes uuugggghhhh can't even stand typing the word!

It's one of the reasons my parents didn't emigrate to Australia when I was little. We were going to go to Adelaide and the literature mentioned 'sn**s' and I had the screaming ab dabs! (i'm sure there were other reasons they didn't go!)

The more unusual but milder phobia is - I can't stand dinner plates being left in front of me when I've finished eating. I have to move them straight away and if I'm eating out anywhere I get really anxious if they are not moved. I usually have to leave the table and go to the loo or something out of the way until they are gone!

Deep water - hate it, like others have mentioned, I always feel it's drawing me in. Have nightmares for days after i've been near/driven past deep water.

Snakes are mine too, don't know what I'd do if I came face to face with one. I was once in the sea off Barbados when I thought I saw one in the water next to me; would've beaten Linford Christie up that beach.

Snakes, more precisely, "killer brown snakes" have been on the news here tonight, shiver. Apparently the Gold Coast is over-run with them. So looks like I’ll be spending Easter in the city. Oh hum.

Lord Chaverly, I think that they have just reprieved the chewing gum ban in Singapore, as they did with the long hair on men law a few years back. It used to be the case that if you wanted to leave the airport and had hair longer than shoulder length, that you would be given a short back and sides on the spot!

My strange phobia is that i cant look at a tv screen that is all black with white lines on it.

Do you remember those old video machines years ago where you had to get a test signal on.
The jet black screen with a white line going down the middle.
I was absolutely terrified of this.

And if my screen saver ever goes off and leaves a blank black screen or black screen with coloured writing i still couldnt use the pc. until a coloured one is put on again.

Im ok with a white screen with black on it but not the other way round.

Also if getting in a bath i have to have the deep water transparent, no dark coloured bath stuff .
pretty much ok these days as most stuff is quite colourless.

Also im afraid of the artificial voice aid (electro larynx)
I feel awful about this and know those poor people with throat cancer are suffering but i have a phobia of the microphoned voice that comes out of the aid.
not keen on automated voices either.- esp male.

I'm petrified of escalators too, and I thought this was weird but there's a least 7 others on here who feel the same! I'm not bad at going up, but I simply cannot go down an escalator apart from tiny, small ones with good lighting, because I can't see the steps properly due to my eyesight.

Nasty evil things, I hate them. There's shops I can't go in because they only have escalators and no stairs. I don't use the underground, but I tried to once, planning a route with no escalators which worled until I got to westminster and the lift was broken! It took me three goes before I could get on the thing, and I had to do it or be doomed to stay underground til the lift was fixed. I can also only stand on the left, which doesn't go down well in London!

I remember those ads, wasn't there one with a rag doll getting mangled in an escalator too? There was one about slurry pits which showed a child drowning in the muck, so as a result I'm now petrified of those too.

I also hate polystyrene packaging, other people's vomit and chicken fat. Eyuw.

I've always found it difficult to have such an irrational fear because of the way other people relate to it. Through my phobia I developed obsessive compulsie disorder and was hospitalized. Yet for some reason people find the idea of this phobia humorous.

I got home from work last night and went to open the patio door to go into the garden and there was the biggest slug I've ever seen half way up the door, it was massive, like an eel.

I'm not squeemish usually but this was like something out of a horror film, I had to prise it off the glass with a trowel and catapult it into next doors garden.

It was was huge, with an orange frill round the bottom, I should have taken a photo.

Same here i go in hysterics if I see one, and wont rest until it is removed.

Be it big, small, close or distant it freaks me soooo much.
The spice monster in Dune really freaks me out.
I used to have a bizarre issue with spontaneous combustion as a child but I made myself read about it and decided I'm not scared anymore. I was reminded of it by a previous thread.
I don't think there's a name for my phobia.

Oh my god i have a thing about natural sponges! I thought i was the only one. ha ha
It all stems from a dream i had when my leg was made out of white plastic with loads of small holes and you could see right inside it. It really freaks me out.

Like other posters on here it's the thought of them in my mouth (just had to pull a funny face thinking about it) Also scared to death of balloons, cant stand the squeeky sound they make when you run your fingers down them and i really freak if they burst!

I wouldn't say I'm scared of them per se, but I am a bit wary of Snakes, ever since some idiot put a big Python on my shoulders at School once.

I do remember being scared of a scene from WWF before I found out it was all fake where Jake "The Snake" Roberts set a massive King Cobra on "Macho Man" Randy Savage after their match... :gag:

I realise now that the Cobra had probably been de-venomised prior to the event otherwise it would never have been allowed to bite Randy Savage as it would've no doubt killed him there and then.

3 stupid things that get me, although only the first is a genuine phobia which instills irrational terror (no joke) and the urge to run away screaming:

1. daddy longlegses
2. the feel of wet or damp paper, especially newspaper - makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
3. all other insects (not spiders) - they're fine when they're alive, but when they're dead they make me feel disgusting and sick. A dead lacewing on the attic windowsill can be enough to keep me out of the attic room for weeks.

Not a proper phobia as it's not actually real but sometimes when I'm in the swimming pool I get scared there might be sharks. I'm serious! I know there are no sharks in swimming pools but for some reason when I'm halfway across I start hearing Jaws music in my head and I panic and do that crazy person shark attack swimming style to get to the edge as quickly as possible. 1) Wrists – I don’t like looking at mine or other peoples, People can’t touch mine and I can’t wear watches/bracelets etc.
2) Snakes coming up the toilet and biting me on the bum! This may sound irrational but I know it can happen!!! Especially fear this after watching scary films – even if they have nothing to do with toilets or snakes!

People who dress up as things - this includes mime artists (*shudders*), clowns, those HORRIBLE people who dress up as animals or characters for publicity or 'entertainment' purposes or people dressed as historical figures.
It should be made illegal. It causes me great distress and terror when i see anything like this, which leads to embarassment.

Mime artists are the worst. They go against everything that is natural and safe. There is nothing entertaining about this. It is odd - and VERY scary.

MMmmmmm, maybe I was a little harsh on him!!............ No!....... being scared of foam rubber to a point where you can back him into a corner with a small piece of it is still weirder than mine.

Pffft! You could go a long way with this one!

But I must agree with you.. it's very weird.

Gawd, I'm so lucky, I have no phobias, not even 'normal' ones.

As the unfortunate subject of this thread when it first started (many moons ago!!) I'm delighted to report that there is another in my office who has an odder, more disturbing phobia than my disinclination towards packing foam namely. . . . . . .

Cuppa Soup.

Now, I can understand not liking them, I can even understand hatred for them . . . but running away at the sight ???

I no longer the owner of the weirdest phobia WOOHOO ;p

I'm scared of spiders, although it's common, I think it's odd that I'm not scared by any other bugs at all. Also, large spiders, like taratulas don't bother me. just the small ones in my house.

I've asked around but I don't know anyone else who shares this really strange phobia with me.
If I see a picure of the earth from space it freaks me out and I can't look at it.
This got me thinking...
I can see why our species might have developed phobias for snakes, spiders etc., but why should harmless phobias exist?

sort of phobias i have are

i hate the screeching noise of polystyrene, fingers on blackboard etc
i used to hate the feel of socks on my feet without shoes on, im not too bad now, but i still hate wooly gloves on my hands
when i walk on the grass my feet go all tingley in case i stand in dog****

and im not too tough on puke, i hate being sick, cant remember the last time i was sick, i hold it in no matter what
somebodys sick, thats me, sick

i also cant stand things in my mouth, a hair, finger, bread stuck to the roof of my mouth makes me want to chuck

I dont have any strange ones, but today my mum was on the phone and was trying to organise balloons and banners for someones birthday at work and she was telling her friend who was at work over the phone that she'd put the balloons in a bag in a draw, then i heard "oh i didnt know you had a balloon phobia....yeah i know about (name's) balloon phobia but i didnt know about yours."

I was laughing, i'd never heard of being scared of balloons!

On the subject of fear of heights, does anyone else get the feeling when you're up somehwere high, that you're not scared of simply falling, but you feel a strange force pulling you to the edge, daring you to jump? It's nothing to do with feeling suicidal, just a wierd compulsion that is in itself quite scary. Part of you has to actively stop yourself from doing it. Where on earth does that come from?

I think i kinda know what your on about. when i was about 12 I fell in a reservoir (not high i know) but i was like looking 'into' the water and i felt like i was drawn to the edge and it was strange, only way i could describe it is 'outer body experience' which is abit of a dramatic expression but it was so weird! I like saw it from a different angle and not as it was happening. :loopy: I know! And the first thing i said when i 'shot' back out the water was "that wasn't me!"

An ex colleague used to scream and run off if a banana was near her.

So of course I started throwing banana skins at her as well as secreting them into her bag.
