Now this shows the value of the Forum!!!

I currently work down at Exchange Street so I've been able to ring my office, and be told to put the kettle on for a while as they're not sure what the heck is happening!

Excellent!

Now where's that kettle!

Joe :)

Does anyone have any info on the really strong smell of gas around Victoria Quays - we're trying to contact various sources but it's really worrying!

If the gas leak has reached Walkley then we're in trouble... :)

From Council website:

Traffic Update - Wednesday 28th September

Due to a leaking gas mains on a site bounded by Broad Street, Sheaf Street and Ponds Forge, adjacent to Park Square roundabout, traffic is slow moving on the inner relief road.

Affected roads: Sheaf Street, St Mary's Gate and Upper Hanover Street.

As a result access to Ponds Forge, the Royal Mail depot on Pond Hill, Dixon Lane and the Ibis Hotel is affected.

It is unlikely that repairs to the main will be complete by today, so this situation may carry on until tomorrow morning. Please avoid driving around the area if you can or leave more time for your journey.

BBC Radio Sheffield news :-

Traffic in Sheffield City Centre has been thrown into chaos this morning as workmen in the Park Square Roundabout chopped through a main city centre gas pipe.
South Yorkshire Police state that at the moment the problem is under control and no plans have been made to evacuate the area, but they do advise commuters to avoid the affected area until further notice to avoid further congestion!

for any body who needs to get up broad street for any reason:

Traffic is currently allowed up Pond Hill the wrong way to gain access to Ponds forge, the Ibis and the Post Office depot

just come off sheaf square roundabout towards the station instead, and keep an eye out for the temporary road access signs, and the policeman controlling the traffic at the traffic lights by pond's forge.

Traffic Update - Wednesday 28th September (Updated 13:50)

As a result of earlier damage to a large diameter gas main in the city centre, Transco have implemented an exclusion zone which is being enforced by the police.

Exclusion Zone (pedestrians and vehicles): Traffic is being stopped from going into Broad Street (off Park Square Roundabout) and Shude Hill.

Slow Moving Traffic: Affecting the inner relief road, in particular Sheaf Street, St Mary's Gate and Upper Hanover Street.

It is anticipated that repairs won't be completed until the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Please avoid driving around the area if you can or leave more time for your journey. Supertram is unaffected.

I was working at SYPTE & Sheffield Interchange (Pond Street) Today and the smell of gas was very, very srtong. The SYPTE building on exchange street was inside the exclusion zone but the levels were deemed safe.
