A friend has come to me with a problem. Their somputer has suddenly slowed down massively.

I've checked for all the usual suspects especially as system restore won't load up.

Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that it is their copy of Norton Anti Virus which is causing the problem.

It has corrputed and doesn't fully function but I can't seem to get it off the bloody computer.

I've closed everythig connected down and tried to remove and started in safe mode for the uninstall but it won't go.

The only other thing I could try is re-installing and then un-installing but I don't have the disk.

Does anyone have any tips for getting rid of Norton?

This could be a number of things.

1. Virus

2. Adware

System restore can be dangerous.

I would do this.

1. Disable System restore.

2. Check all microsoft updates are loaded.

3. Go here :

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Follow the instructions.

If this doesn't work you will need some adware removal programs and a another called hijack this.

I would say adware is the probable cause of your problem TBH.

Hiya chrissy :)

I believe you will be needing the Symantec Norton Antivirus Removal Tool (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606).

Hope this helps :)

Vidster - thanks. I'll have a go tomorrow with the removal tool

Donky7 - not possible to format and re-install - the computer has some software on from a specialist copmpanywho will only install the software themselves for a price. If I'd known about it I wouldn't have let them get involved in a company like that but...when they have you over a barrel...PS, if anyone ever asks me, I swear by AVG - it's the hammerite of the antivirus world and it's free.

Yanzui - this is what I meant by the usual suspects. I get a call that says: system retore disabled, norton disabled, computer slow - I think coolWWWsearch. pretty rare these days but still there. I've looked for the footprints but there not there. If I disable system retore, I loose all the previous system restore points, which I don't want to do.
