View Full Version : Bob Dylan documentary
Tubthump 27-09-2005, 13:13 Watched the first part of the excellent Martin Scorsese documentary last night which featured footage of the 1966 gig at the Sheffield City Hall. There were a few disgruntled fans shown bemoaning his change from acoustic to electric. Any elder forummers admit to being one of them?

That was the 1966 concert
dishwasher 30-09-2005, 00:10 No, I was much too young to see him in 66.
But I saw him in 1978 (Earl's Court) and was in a queue to buy tickets at Wilson Pecks. Queued up all night. It was freezing cold.
Were any other Forum members in that queue?

Oh the wonders of the edit button. Mistakes just vanish as if they were never made.
carcrash 30-09-2005, 13:16 You play the harmonica and guitar at the same time, like Bob Dylan or Neil Young - the world considers you a genius, visionary and spokesman for a generation. Go that extra mile, and strap a drum to your back, and see what happens
Is it me, but is Bob Dylan in the Top 3 Most Overrated Musicians Ever ?
I just don't get his appeal. I was obviously born too young. Either that or I hate vain protest songs ;)

Yes it's just you. Dylan is probably the world's greatest living songwriter.
With a couple of later exceptions, he hasn't written a protest song since 1964 (vain, or otherwise :loopy: )
dishwasher 30-09-2005, 23:25 Carcrash.
I'm sorry to say this, but it sounds like you've never really listened to any Dylan at all.
If you had have done you would not have posted what you did.
carcrash 01-10-2005, 14:42 It was a joke you miserable sod. I'm a big fan of Dylans and thought the documentry was one of the best things I've seen for a while.
Martin Scorsese has done a couple of things on TV recently. The Blues series was stunning TV but this was better. I hope he carries on doing TV.
dishwasher 01-10-2005, 14:54 Well, the punchline certainly had me creased up in stitches!
Masked and Anonymous is on BBC2 tonight but in certain quarters of the media it's had a right slating.
It is one to watch, or one to avoid?

Don't bother. I'm a huge Dylan fan, but this is not what you'd call one of his masterpieces.
Dylan wrote the script and frankly it's dire. His acting is not too hot either.
Overall, it's hard to work out what's going on, the storyline is so, er, "enigmatic".
dishwasher 01-10-2005, 23:15 I think enigmatic is the key word.
some of the music was quite good though.

The soundtrack CD is a killer. There's a Japanese version of My Back Pages (!), a rap version of Like A Rolling Stone in Spanish which actually samples Bob's original single and many more weird and wonderful Dylan covers.
There are also 4 new Dylan songs unavailable elsewhere
