View Full Version : Isn't Meadowhall annoying?

I hate to moan, well actually i dont which why iam on this forum!?, but does anyone else absolutely hate Meadowhall; too many people, an environment that feels like an over sanitized mental asylum and plastic food. Why are we forced (due to the hemorrhaging of shops from the city centre) to reduce ourselves to moronic automatons shoveling low grade instrustrial waste in the oasis (irony intended surely) down our throats to find anything half decent to buy?

I can see your point. The last time I visited meadowhead it wasn't pleasant either. Those shops there are rubbish - I ended up walking a bit further down into woodseats. Much better shops and friendlier people.

I wasn't aware that anyone was being forced to eat and shop at Meadowhall.

Personally I avoid the place like the plague. If I have to go, it's a case of get in and get out.

Fast Food is just that. It's fast and it's usually rubbish.

Enlighten yourself to some of the fine restaurants and eateries in the city centre instead. Mamas and Leonies for example.

But you'll need more than a five pound note.

I think you'll find he said MEADOWHALL, not MEADOWHEAD.

Slight difference, me thinks.

Meadowhall has no drunks, no people with clip boards, no big issue salesmen, no parking fees, no tab ends, no chewing gum, no rubbish blowing around, no beggars.

Just to point out a few of the plus points.

If I'm after a mobile phone or something that costs less than a pound I do go into town though :)

I only realy go into town to eat/drink, shopping is cack.

Sorry, yes i've just noticed we're talking about meadowhall. Well I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago with a Sainsburys voucher from the Guardian newspaper and I couldn't even find it! I looked round for over an hour. Ridiculous.

mr_ploppy

Is there really a difference!??!?!

Whereas we are not physically forced there is more than a little psycological pressure, at one point or another you WILL have to go to the 'hell where unless you go hungry there is a certain necessity to chow down on some slop.
Personally ild be happier if the general level of quality was raised not just settled for by the general populous. WHy should i have to flit between mulitple places just to get a square meal!?!?

Steer clear of Meadowhall!
Plenty of good shops in the City Centre and decent places to eat if you are looking for a shopper's lunch.

Apart from Division Street town is terrible for shops.

BTW I'm not a fan of Meadowhall, but it's either there or Leeds/Manchester/London I'm afraid.

Id like an easier way to find what's on offer at the shops and restaurants in the city centre. Tramping round town isn't much fun.

Do all the shops have websites for example?
This is the future, surely.

I personally like meadowhall, some nice shops in there (that arn't in the city centre), no bad weather to worry about, free parking and the crowds only get bad at christmas!!!

mr_ploppy
27-09-2005, 09:32
To be honnest i think the vast majority of shop owners are too stupid to run websites, so unlucky rubber ducky i havent as yet found a web site that could help you. But i will look and get back to you..

Meadhall is great, its indoor, so its great whatever the weather, there are so many shops (that you wont find in town), places to eat, a cinema, i mean cummon you lot, what more could you ask for? Meadowhall is heaven for most women lol i looooveeee it (only when i have money though!!)

The most annoying thoing to me about Meadowhall is that everything is all the same......you can buy the same clothes in practically every shop....all mainstream clone stuff and nothing exciting or original. I would like to see meadowhall become more archaic or experimental, ie more independant shops like in the Forum, and more new exclusive boutiques and stuff like that, had enough of all the rubbish New Look/Top Man trashy shops..rubbish clothes, rubbish bland and excessively sterile type environment...now I know there are a few market stall type shops down The Lanes, but nothing like I have seen in other shopping centres abroad, where you have a lot of new designer shops and so called experimental boutique type places.....Meadowhall should be more like Division STreet and the Forum than any bland and boring City centre high street....

However, Meadowhall has great food area, I cant stop eating SINGAPORE SAMS chicken curry with egg fried rice.....YUM...compensates for the crappy shops....

I agree completly, they are the same reasons id go to meadowhall to shop instead of the city centre. It does annoy me when people complain about meadowhall tho cos where would we be without it ? if meadowhall shut it would take ages for sheffield coucil to sort out this so called NRQ (new retail quarter) they got planned, we might have to go to leeds to do our shoppin, think how bad it would be then !

what about finding non-crap bargains. I don't like e-bay, as I'd rather use local shops near where i live.

There's got to be some decent offers on for clothing, restaurants, hi-fi equipment etc. Surely sheffield has good quality businesses selling at value for money prices. Doesn't it?

Meadowhall

A) No beggars / big issue / random nutters
B) Free parking

If all you're after is stuff from the big chain stores its a no brainer.

However, its doesnt have the quirky stuff backstreet shops town has so it depends on what you're after i suppose.

I once had to go into Meadhell early in the morning and found I had to sit and wait for a shop to open as Iwas too early.

I had forgotten my watch and so I didn't know the time.

I waited and waited but every shop seemed to open but not the one I wanted.

I looked around for a public clock and couldn't find one anywhere I realised I was in a kind of timeless zone.

I even stopped a security guard to ask him the time and he wasn't wearing a watch but did direct me to a jeweller's shop which sold clocks and watches.

When I got there the window was full of clocks and watches all set at different times.

I reckon some shoppers could be in there for days and not realise how much time they had spent there.

Happy Days!

i think u r all forgetting how much meadowhall does for this city. sure its busy and that but thats a gud thing cos people arein buying things pumping money into sheffield. a lot of people visit sheff for the sole purpose of going to meadowhall. if we didnt have meadowhall a lot of people partucallry students wud lose their jobs. meadowhall is great if ur a student as u can get an easy job there and its easy money. evrything is under one roof and although i hate shopping we wud be nowhere without meadowhall. a lot of thing wud shut down such as the lovely station that gets u to sheff and a few other places. what about the supertram? without meadowhall the supertram wud not go anywhere near it and it uwd cost millions to put down new lines. so all im saying is that for all its faults meadowhall does a lot of good for sheff and i think people shud be a little more grateful of that fact.

It's true to a point. Meadowhall today is much better than having derelict steel works.

But, I don't really agree with the fact it pumps money into Sheffield. Sure, they pay their rates and staff are employed but I don't think the city centre benefits from this.

If Meadowhall didn't exist, the shops would be forced to be located in the city centre, so there would still be employment.

I think the council is responsible for the decline of the city centre, not Meadowhall, if the rent was less in town I'm sure more shops would open. Once of my favourite shops SUMO was on Division Street for years until they just couldn't afford the rent any more and had to close.

As many people have pointed out Manchester has a much bigger shopping centre but the city centre is till full of lots of small specialist shops as well as the big high street giants.

There used to be a lot more small shops in town, remember the ones down the side of the peace gardens, where Bar Ha Ha is now, or the ones opposite Cole Brothers, where Weatherspoons is now, or the ones on West Street where the bars are now (starting to see a pattern ?)

I've got an idea. Why don't we suggest that each business in meadowhall donates 1% of its yearly profits to people in Sheffield that are needy. Mental health, drug treatment, unemployed.

This way meadowhall could really add value to Sheffield?

i love meadow hell as it is more commonly known, for two reason, it keeps the kids nice and dry when they are wagging school and while ever it is shops etc it isnt a prison, which it would be if it had not succeeded as a shopping centre, although i some times wonder if it became an open prison and no one told us?

morse
27-09-2005, 12:27
Yes, I have to say - I once had the misfortune to watch a tv programme about a really rough housing estate where all the kids had earrings, wore baseball caps, tracksuits, walked and talked like they were of different ethnic origin, and spent most of their time smashing up cars, burglary and hanging out in gangs.

It would seem as if most of these lovely poeple have now been given a custodial sentence at meadowhall.

Has anybody noticed how horrible all the entrances to m'hall have become, since they banned people from smoking inside - all the fagheads congregate as close to the doors as possible creating a stinky crowd which you have to wade through to get through the doors.
The pavements are littered with cigarette butts and the other detritus that these idiots (yes people who choose to smoke despite the risks ARE idiots) create.
Not much gets on my nerves, but if they are going to ban smoking from meadowhall they should ban people from lighting up in the doorways too.
Its going to get even worse when the cold weather comes, those huddled masses indulging in their habit don't like standing in the cold or wet and they will creep through the doors when they think no ones looking!

Someone call the over-reaction police.

Why would they want to do this when they can keep that 1% profit? It's not like they're losing custom through not being socially aware?

There's going to be people that like Meadowhall, and people that don't. But I don't think the majority of shops are losing sleep about it.

I hate Meadowhell.. the one or two times a year I venture there (usually for shoes or something in particular you can't get in town) I usually come home with a headache, in a grump with none of the things I went for swearing never to go again.

I used to like shopping there and in the MetroCentre at Gateshead when i was a teenager but now I can't stand the crowds and the enclosed feeling. I feel like I'm always tripping over people and its waaay too full of chavs and screaming brats.

Its a shame we don't have a city centre like leeds or manchester cos I much prefer to stay away from Malls but sometimes you just have to brave M'hell. :gag:

I agree.

Loads of fresh air in town, especially next to the roads with the cars & busses thundering past.

Town is so very civilised especially when there is a match on.

How exactly is town tempaerature controlled, I seem to remember last time I was in town it rained, and I got wet, not very controled I thought.

I don't even know what queue control is (do people with stun guns patrol the queues in town) ?

Devonsire Green has a lovely atmosphere I agree, so does the Haymarket and Moor areas.

I go to Meadowhall to shop not to drink.

Yeah, every shop in meadowhall is the same, not like town where every pound shop has different "bargains" to be had.

I cant believe so many hate Meadowhall. Granted it's nothing great but the parking is free and i can get almost anything i want from there.

It is clean, it's warm and protected from the elemenst of the weather. Others also state the added bonus is no people with clipboards and no beggars.

But there are chavs in Meadowhall, the difference is that they are controlled chavs. Report any wrong doing to the security or customer service desks and they'll be asked to leave, if there's a major problem police are always at hand. You dont get that in the city centre.

I don't go to Lincoln very much anymore because I have bored of it through going there too much.

But, in Lincolns Defence there are all the Shops at the bottom of the High Street in St Marks which are OK, Debenhams and Adams, TK Maxx, Mothercare etc.

Then at the top of the High Street up the cobbled hill near the Cathedral with all the antiquity shops and some of the smaller non chain clothes shops which are quite good.

There are better cities..... for shopping and I suppose Manchester is closer but Lincoln is only 1hr 20mins away by train and worth a visit if nothing else but to marvel at the Cathedral and have a look at the castle.

Also the Lincoln Christmas Market is well worth a visit, I know most of you have started your Christmas preparations :D . I don't like Christmas but the Lincoln Christmas Market always fills me with festive cheer.
