View Full Version : Has Anyone Had a Good Deal on a PC Recently?
mjlacey21 27-09-2005, 08:46 Have read past threads, but they just befuddle me.
Would purely like to know if anyone has bought a PC package (inc monitor, keyboard, maybe printer) they have been impressed with recently. Any price, just don't waste technical knowledge on me it freezes my brain!
All I need it for is excel, word outlook and internet, not very exciting.
Thanks muchly
neeeeeeeeeek 27-09-2005, 08:52 Check out hotukdeals.co.uk and look for Dell discounts. The Dimension 3000 range are great cheap computers, you can normally get a very good deal by changing the warranty to 1 year back to base and selecting a few other things.
chrisssy 27-09-2005, 11:28 I don't use Dell anymore. It seems as if the computers are loss-leaders and they make their money on the extras which are relatively very expensive.
Also, when I've had problems with them in the past, they were rubbish.
Buy local is my advice. Try the Real Computer Shop, Ecclesall Road if you live near:

That's some good backwards logic for you. The likes of Dell, Staples and PC World etc... all do this and hope you buy a PC and printer (at loss to them) but then buy cables and extra crap that they make huge profits on. If you know they do this then there's no reason to not buy anything from them as you can pick up the stuff they do make a loss on and avoid the rip off extras. Works for me.
chrisssy 27-09-2005, 11:44 I just got fed up of:
1) trawling through pages of options ticking the boxes.
2) Terrible customer service
3) All the crap they put on their 'ready to use' new computers.
for someone who has limited computer knowledge imagine getting a PC which is supposedly new but it is filled with tons and tons of useless intrusive advertisements and software.
The last latop I bought from Dell it took me 2 hours getting rid of Norton and all the other crap on it.
Dell must make half their money from companies like Tiscalli and Wanadoo for pre-loading their software.

Which I would take off immediately!
alchresearch 27-09-2005, 12:04 I know someone who buys Dell machines for his business but the last few times he's been seriously let down.
Comet aren't too bad for packages, its usually HP gear as well.
chrisssy 27-09-2005, 12:12 The worst software is AOL.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
neeeeeeeeeek 27-09-2005, 12:18 It's hotdeals.co.uk and they don't seem to have any special offers on at the moment. keep checking tho.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they were fantastic but I recently boutgh 7 Dell Poweredge servers in one go and they couldn't help enough, I had phonecalls, managers and supervisors, everything, couldn't do enough. I've since had maybe 6 desktops off them and they're not all that bothered if I buy anything or not.
I've gone off them now because they keep touting these cheap packages with Celerons in which I will not use for business machines. I've got a customer who has just informed me that 2 new Dell desktops have been ordered, I'd be surprised if they were P4 as it never really sunk in last time I explained it. :(

I agree with Lurch here , you can get a good deal from PCwprld or Currys quite often, just don't buy any of the other high priced c**p they try to sell you, and do not buy their extended warranty

''PC World, Currys'' (DSG) and ''good deal'' are not synonymous - they sell them overpriced with poor components, IMO.

It's taken them the best part of 3 months if not considerably longer to process my request for a quote on a printer and the chap dealing with it keeps on telling me that he cant find what I want at the price I'm looking for when I havent given him a price limit :suspect:
I custom build pc's and although they usually come out about the same price as normal pc's they are in fact FULLY customised to your requirements. When someone asks me for a pc i ask for 2 things
1 What are you going to do with it
2 How much do you WANT to spend
I will then come up with the best specification for that amount based on what they are going to be doing with it.
Main advantage you ONLY get the software YOU need & I Can visit at home (although this is obviously chargeable) or just come and see me here in SHEFFIELD.
I believe it doesnt come any better and i have NEVER had a single complaint >>????.
please send any computer related quotes or questions to custompc@nucad.com
