I heard from a reputable source, nudge nudge wink wink say no more, that theres a new type of covert speed camera, possible disguised as a brids nest at or around the broadfield pub. Apparently theyre just prosecuting the frist few speeders now, one of them being an old lady.

I attended a talk given by the local constabulary in August at the cutlers hall, and yes I'm afraid it's true, they using these secret camera things. Although I heard it was on the opposite corner to the Broafield by the bank.

Ive just checked back with my contact, to firstly confirm that there is the speed camera on abbeydale road, but ive also found out that there are going to be some more locations added after this successful trial period. Word is theyll be placed around the moor to reduce the high speed delivery risk thats evidently there now; waggons and milk deliveries (fresly charged first thing in the morning) breaking the limit in town.
Has this country gone mad i ask???
Whats happened to good old fashioned common sense!!!

Thats what they want you to think, but now that everyone knows that and look out for them the revenue is falling. Will the black hole in the budget and public bodies like the NHS and police force with no money the government (local and national) need extra revenue streams from somewhere.

Now here's an interesting point. I am also led to believe that the authorities are installing covert cameras to point at speed cameras, so that they can catch those people that set them on fire. I think they use tyres - not sure how that would work though.

Will they also have to install spy cameras to watch over the covert cameras that are watching the speed cameras? ;)

I think they will just employ extra traffic wardens disguised as street dwellers (get a special brew allowance each month) to look over a zone each.

well exactly. the whole thing is mad. The biggest worry for me is that in the same report i read how once all cars become fitted with gps as standard, our routes and speeds will be recorded!

And, in a crazy effort to make 'society' accept speed cameras, they are planning to connect internet access points to the side of them which will also be able to make phone calls!

what next - selling sandwiches from speed camera points.

This country.

Once saw this on Jeremy Clarkson prog from Holland.

Yes tyre are used, they hang them over the box and fill them with petrol.

Now petrol's a bit costly at the moment but I know where there are some spare tyres!!

The Dutch also stood ahead of mobile cameras with signs to slow down - now that's what you call teamwork!!

those tyres must be big to fit over a speed camera. Is this possible?

Certainly not listed here...

http://www.safetycamera.org/cameras.aspx?CF=Camera

Where ALL fixed and mobile cameras are listed.

From meory I believe the rules are fairly simple. A Safety Camera Partnership (the group that place the cameras and run them - they incldue the police as members) MUST give good notice of all cameras (both on the web and by making the camera visible on the road) or they CANNOT keep the revenue from any speed camera in the force area.

Therefore its highly unlikely there are ANY covert or disguised SPEED cameras in South Yorkshire - though I suppose their might be CCTV style traffic monitoring cameras that the cops can use to watch out for reckless drivers.

So don't panic just yet. I am trying to get hold of someone to confirm this at the mo - and will let you know when I do - or when I don't in which case I shall eat my words!

Why not? As a law abding member of civil society you have nothing to hide, nor fear.

A "flight recorder" in all cars would aid accident investigation enormously.

Civil liberties anyone?

deserve neither liberty nor safety."

will not have, nor do they deserve, either one."

Dear me, why does everyone persist in believing the everything that they are told by the authorities! Of course they dont want you to know about these new cameras, that would defeat the object of the excercise. British citizens are the most monitored in the world, i.e. most CCTV and ref this thread Speed Cameras.

Dont believe the lies!

They are watching you!

Only the most foolish of peolpe would swallow the Soma that is comminucations from the authorities.

Both speaking before the widespread use of cars.

What liberties or freedoms do you give up by having a GPS 'black box' in your car, precisely?

It would be foolish of them to lie. Firstly it ain't hard to find a hidden camera (when people start getting fined for speeding on a stretch of road without a camera for one). Secondly were they to be found out they would a) risk public outcry and ridicule, further undermining a system already unpopular with many and b) likely have the hundreds of thousands of pounds a year revenue currently fed back to the Camera Partnership snatched away from them and diverted to the Tresury. I am no fan of Speed Cameras, but happen to know some people at the Partnership through work. They are not liars.

True but the principle holds true. Its the not-so-thin end of the wedge. Would you really like to have all your movements recorded by strangers. What if you were up to something that, whilst wasn't illegal, was something you wanted to keep secret?

Perhaps you have an embarrassing illness and like to hide your late night pharmacy trips - maybe you are cheating on your partner - none of which are illegal. Would you like records of your activities being kept?

I wouldn't for one.
