View Full Version : Creating a website
miaowwoof 26-07-2010, 20:33 Are websites free?
I want just a basic website (not a forum-a website) for me to show my dolls on but I cant afford to pay.
Can anyone help if they know if they are free and who does them? many thanks
Bloomdido 26-07-2010, 20:37 Do you have a domain?
miaowwoof 26-07-2010, 20:43 A what? Im not technical lol
edhardie 26-07-2010, 20:58 There are loads of companies that offer free websites you can build yourself. A quick google search for "Free Website Builder" gives you loads of companies. I guess you'll have to have a look and see which companies you like the look of. I don't quite know what the purpose of your website is, but if you're just looking to show some friends some photos of your dolls I recommend making a Flickr account (www.flickr.com) where you can create photo albums and share them with friends online.
miaowwoof 26-07-2010, 21:02 No it will be to advertise my dolls as well.
I would rather work 1 to 1 with someone. Im sure ive seen people offer on here to voluntarily do them before :/
jasonfranci 26-07-2010, 21:06 Hi,
By domain, Bloomdido means an internet address that you own, where you can put your website? If you don't have this, you can purchase one for a small amount. Alternatively, you could get a free site (well actually a blog, which seems likely to fit what you are after) at Wordpress - you can search for this on google, but I am unable to add a link as it's one of my first posts. You can sign up for free.
Hope this helps - feel free to pm me if you want more help.
Thanks
Jason
Bloomdido 26-07-2010, 21:14 The voluntary offer may be for charities or not for profits. Have you looked to see if you can access business start-up advice or training? Wordpress is a good place to start. There are courses around, many of which are free and I think Indizine on here does free web hosting.

Hi
its not for a business. Its more just to show off your collection and your work, hardly anyone makes a profit at reborning. I thought it would be easy for someone to set up a website with just a few pages, nothing massive. Here is examples of a reborners website:

We'll I've got a small company I run in my spare time. (www.FastForwardWebDesign.co.uk). We offer 1 to 1 service but cannot offer it for free (prices are online), however as I've said there are plenty of free services out there!
megalithic 26-07-2010, 21:28 I use Weebly for my website, the one in my signature, totally free and they don't place advertisements on your site unlike some others, it's all drag and drop too so not that complicated to build.
Not sure if it's the type of site your looking for though.

That type of site would be fine, but Im not nearly technical enough even to drag n drop. I need someone to make my banner (header) and stuff :/
jasonfranci 26-07-2010, 21:54 Hi,
Is there literally no budget for this project? If so, there might be some sort of funding available where you could get some money towards what you are trying to achieve. Are you an individual or a small private company?
thanks
Jason

Would you ask for a free mechanic or a free nail technician? What is it that leads people to think they will get something for nothing because it is in cyberspace?
megalithic 26-07-2010, 22:34 Best i can recommend is setting up a weebly site and having a play around with it, when you've got your bearings make another in the way you want it to look.
It'll cost you nothing and learn you a lot, eg if someone builds it for you and you have no knowledge of how to edit the site your tied to peoples good will forever, it's really not that hard believe me, i taught someone how to use weebly via e-mail. !
I'd love to commit to help you personally but at the minute i don't have the time to spare but i'd be happy to give you pointers if you get stuck with anything.
Initially have a play around and see how you go.

Bit harsh Bd, people in this section have offered their services for free in the past.
Bloody good bunch here. :)

I'm not expecting I'm just asking. People have done so before. If no one can it's fine. I'm only asking, I don't know whether doing a basic webpage takes 1hr or weeks, I've no idea.

Thank you I might try it :)
megalithic 26-07-2010, 23:17 Please do, you have nothing to lose and you could learn a hell of a lot.
As i said, make a "throw away" site first then move on to your "real" site when you've learned the basics.
If you get stuck at all post your questions in this thread and i'll be happy to answer you when i can.
1 year ago i could never have imagined making the Pecsaetan site and look at that now, some of the sites are top on a Google search.
i recomend mr site for a basic-ish web site very good and very easy check my website (in my sig) to get a view on what you can do with little work and for only £25 a year
i have a full sealed boxed retail copy for sale £20 if your interested
Angilaruk 27-07-2010, 00:35 www.webs.com is REALLY easy to use, and free too :) Very basic, create something similar first to have a "play" before committing to the real website you want. It's all about using common sense that's all. Go on, you know you can do it really :)

Have a look at the weebly link that was posted earlier - it cost nothing and its really easy.
If you can type, and use a mouse, you can make a site with that.
You can have it up and running in minutes - adding the content will take as long as you want.
Weazel2006 27-07-2010, 19:27 They may want someone to focus on that site itself while she focuses on her hobby/business.
Asking for freebies is ok as long as there is no expectation of it being realized, there is always someone starting up and willing to help within reason.
From what i have read it isnt a huge project and they are not asking the earth either, while there are cheeky people who want owt for nowt from web designers i don't think this person is one of them.
Simply someone wanting a basic website that cant/doesnt want to do it.
Great chance for portfolio builders.
detheridge02 31-07-2010, 10:45 There are a lot of web designers on here, myself included, that can help if you get stuck. I'm afraid very few will create a totally free site. We all have business bills to pay (server costs, staff etc) and the old saying of time is money is all too true these days.
I could build you a site with image gallery etc but in return I would ask that you host the site with my company (from only £2.99 per month) and that I could use your site in my advertising as an example of our work.
As I say, if you get stuck fire a question up on here and we'll help you out.
