With the release of many anime claasics on dvd in the u.k, an interest in the genre has risen again.

The first piece of anime I watched was the premiere of Akira on BBC2 years ago, since then I have always watched it.
But is it just another fad on another format? Ihope not!
Anybody here a fan of anime? What's your favorite show/film?

Fist of the North Star, the series rather than the film. It was on ch4 when I was a student, but for some reason they didnt show the entire run. Very nice to watch when you're off your melon.

I remember late night C4 anime showings, it got me into AD police and Cyber city.

I love anime

Some of my favourites:

Akira (subtitled, not dubbed)
Ninja Scroll
Ghost in the Shell
3x3 Eyes (thoroughly reccomended, despite being hard to come by)

I hope it isn't a fad, it's just the rest of the world becoming more accepting of japanese culture.

I think I've still got Cyber City: OEDO on video from when it was on CH4's "late licence" slot - all three episodes!! Also highly recommend Ninja Scroll, Akira (japanese version - soundtrack's better!), The Guyver (12 episodes) and Wicked City...

If you're watching Appleseed though, I'd read the graphic novels (the originals) - they're much better drawn! Anyone got any other recommendations? S'been ages since I've seen any new ones...

duffman
19-01-2004, 17:18
I have read the appleseed graphic novel and seen the movie, it's just that it was only £7 on dvd. I reccomend Domu it's over 2 graphic novels, very Akira like. I managed to get the Guyver and Cowboy Be-Bop in the states, have some of the original vids but they're wearing out.

By the way Agent Dan what's your avatar? it looks like Septhiroth from Final Fantasy 7.

Agent Dan

:D Sephiroth indeed! Always liked my manga ever since I used o collect Ranma 1/2 when I was a kid! I've graphic novels 1-3 of appleseed still but not the 4th one. I understand that he never finished the 5th due to making other programmes (like ghost in the shell)... Also got one of the old (funnier) dirty pair graphic novels... Not got much on video anymore cos the good stuff (also remember "doomed megalopolis" and "devilman" being on Ch4 ages ago) doesn't seem to be available these days, even in specialist shops like the space centre...

I've been a fan of Manga and Anime for years - ever since I first saw Akira when it was first released over here. I had loads on VHS, but would love to rebuild my collection on DVD. Favourites? Akira (I've also got books 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the original Japanese telephone directory sized Manga comic books, and I've been trying to track down the rest for years! I managed to get hold of some of the original cells used in the Anime too), Laputa, Fist of the North Star (good cheesey fun - although as a general rule, I loathe dubbed films. If it's released with the original Japanese soundtrack on DVD, I'll have to get hold of it), 3x3 Eyes (again, would love to get hold of a version with the original Japanese soundtrack), Vampire Hunter D, Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, Wicked City, Doomed Megalopolis, plus others. There was a load of crap released in the mid 90s too though.

No they were imported Japanese i think. Wasn't it Ulysses 2000? I remeber the theme tunes to most of these!!! Battle of the planets is out on DVD now too, I've seen it for sale in Another World in Derby (upstairs is excellent for manga DVDs)...

Maybe we should do a forum Manga evening!!! Would love to see doomed megalopolis again, quality film(s)!!!

I dunno about Jayce and Wheeled Warriors but I know altho MCoG was Japanese anime it was a French programme which is why you cant get it on DVD here! :( and apparantly they cant repeat it because the BBC have lost the English Translation  Yeah Right!

And I never knew about the uni anime society - sounds interesting but since the request for the addy of the uni society was never answered, then I'm gonna have to search.

and yeah, bluelunar, I heard of .hack xD..personally I thought it sucked but that's just my opinion.

Studio Ghibli films are a particular favourite of mine. Mononoke-Hime in particular, but Whisper of the Heart too was so well-done.

Series-wise, hmm, hard to say favourites - perhaps Saikano or Witch Hunter Robin...and currently Chrno Crusade is another Gonzo great

oh and anime fans might like the link on my www button -_^

Yeah I went all last year and part of the term before Xmas but then got bogged under with work etc and haven't been since! It costs £1 to get in on a Thursday and they show usualy 6 different shows and it's from 7-10. Good fun, and there's a real mix on offer. When I first went I was told they were in the top 5 in the UK but that was 18 months ago now! On www.shef.ac.uk go to societies and there should be the anime contact details.

I came back from America last week and I was expecting to be coming back with loads of anime dvd's but to my dissapointment most of the anime sections in the shops consisted of Yu-gi-oh, drangonball-Z and Pokemon. I do like those shows but when that's all you can get it was a bit annoying, although I did get the New Dominion tank police dvd set, my videos had just about had it.

Really? Who are you?

I'm the treasurer, though I hardly ever turn up anymore :P

Anyway, anime we show are mostly fansubs, though we do our best to buy series on DVD using the soc money for our showings because the quality of the translations tend to be better...

However, we have released a fansub of our own, of the Berserk series, I believe, which is pretty damned good, if I do say so myself....

Anway, what's all this about "japanese japanese anime"? Surely anime by definiton is Japanese?

Anyway.... we're the second biggest soc in the country, second ever soc in the country too, I believe. Losing out on both counts to the London anime soc... damn londoners... (¬___¬)

However, London only meet once a month or something, and do their showings on a tiny TV screen or something... we show anime on a huge cinema-style screen.... but London anime is more of a social thing than an anime screening thing....

Oh yes, first ever anime convention in the UK was held in Sheffield, by the way. :P

Dragon Half is one of my favourites... unfortunately what happened was that only two anime eps were ever made, I'm afraid... However, it all started off as a Manga anyway, so you can try and get hold of that, there are quite a lot of volumes out... It's pretty old, so it's probably quite difficult to get hold of, it was coming out when I last went to HK (and bought a couple of volume, hoho)... and I think I must have been about 14 at the time... so eh... longer than I care to remember, really...

Manga is much better than anime anyway... :P

Last showing of this academic year has been and gone... don't expect things to start up until October when Uni life gets cranking again....

Oh yes. Hallam have started up a soc now... I believe that they will be taking over our extra showing, that is, we'll be dropping our extra showing, and they'll be taking over... but in Hallam... Mainly because we don't want to run in competition with them, but instead choose to run in partnership...

However, from what I hear, the lineup for Hallam Anime will be "popular stuff that's dubbed". Which is a fair bit different from Sheff Uni... since the way we do things is, to show what we consider as "quality" anime with a good mix of genres and not pandering to any one particular taste or the majoity vote. However, I sense Hallam Anime being in general a friendlier more social kind of society....

Finally, Sheffield Anime will most probably be providing a "Give it a go" showing during Fresher's week next year. We had one at the beginning of this year too, which was a Miyazaki film, but I forget which one, "Spirited away", most probably... anyway, what "Give it a go" is, is a university society opportunity thing where you get to have a go at society activities without having to register with them. So for this, Sheffield Anime will be having a one-off showing of some good quality anime movie in the Auditorium (with big cinema-style screen.). I suspect that it may be another Miyazaki film... cost of entry will still be £1 to cover the costs of hiring out the auditorium. I'd say it's well worth it to see a Miyazaki film on the big screen.

Anata wa otaku desu?

and..popular stuff that's dubbed?? Aaargh. Dubbing ruins it, ruins I tell you!

But I'll keep an eye out after the Summer for that "Give it a go" show. It'll be a change to watch something on a big screen, even if I already saw it.
It's just a shame Howl's Moving Castle won't be out by then, that would have been great to show. But there's more to Ghibli than Miyazaki, although Nausicaa might be a nice choice (or Mononoke-Hime although more people may have already seen that even if they're not anime fans normally). Whisper of the Heart is good as is Neko no Ongaeshi/The Cat Returns - or Grave of the Fireflies
