View Full Version : Anyone know what happened at the snake?
I was taking my Swedish friend to Manchester airport today and the snake was all closed off.
We assumed an accident had happened, but just wondered if anyone knew anything.
Am about to look on the regional news now, but if anyone knows, please feel free to let me know!
Lottie x
BUMP! Anyone? I'm desperate to know. It's not that I want gossip just that it's annoying me now.
The dizzy cow sent us down another road saying it was a diversion and we ended up in a pub car park! Everyone was turning round in the car park looking at each other as if to say 'WHAT??'

Some folks will do owt to drum up a bit of lunchtime trade!
Wouldn't swear to it, but I think there were signs up last weekend warning of closure, so perhaps it was planned?
Lol - I know that's what we thought 40 Summat!
Thanks Strix - so glad! I thought perhaps there'd been an accident - I could see something have gone on and a crash over the side or something - I hate the Snake Pass!
gemstone2 25-09-2005, 20:07 hey lotti!
yeh there was 2 accidents early this morning - both motorbikes n round bouts in the same place so is prob reason 4 big diversion!
lalaland 27-09-2005, 23:49 There was a motorcycle accident outside the pub just after the right turn for the bridge towards Hathersage (if you carry on towards Strines and Rivelin Valley, before the road gets twisty).
When I got there an ambulance and a police car had the road down to one lane, but not blocked off. There were massive tail backs though (unless you were on two wheels like me).
Looked nasty, a mondeo with a smashed front end and a sports bike in bits. The rider being strapped to a board with the usual bits and bobs from the paramedics and his mates looking on in shock.
Don't know how he got on, but I hope he's pulled through.
That didn't shut the snake, but it certainly slowed traffic down for a good while in the afternoon.
Its often closed for one reason or another. Wouldn't get too excited.
Oh gosh!
I hope they were all ok! I hate the snake - it looks so scary! LOL
I've seen people messing around on there though, overtaking when it's not safe. Accidents are bound to happen!
tgigreeny 28-09-2005, 10:38 Yet another Biker using the Peak District as their personal playground, perchance?. Whilst I am very sorry to see people hurt on the roads; having lived in the Hope Valley my wholw life (until very recently) it does p--s me off the way middle aged, mid-life crisis morons with powerful bikes ride around our roads like they own the place with no regard for the safety of themselves or others, overtaking on blind crests and riding on the wrong side of the road around blind hairpins/
Sorry, rant over - I do genuinely feel bad for anyone who's hurt, and its entirely possible that this chap was hit by a driver who was overtaking - but there are just too many motorbike accidents and something must be done about it for everyone's good.
For future reference, next time you get diverted at Ladybower (the usual point for closing the snake - though in this case I beleive the accident was on the A57 near the Strines turn which is a few miles before the Snake Pass begins) turn left and drive through Bamford (over the bridge). Then when you get to the T-junction with a Texaco garage turn right and head through Hope and Castleton. Turn left onto Winnat's Pass after Castleton and at the juntion at the top take a right onto Rushop Edge.
You will eventually come to a junction with the A6. Turn right onto this (towards Furness Vale) and keep going until you hit the M60 and you're just minutes from Manchester Airport. In the middle of the night and when traffic is light this route can be far faster than the A57.
Note: you can also turn off the M6 in Stockport and cut through to Manchester Airport without hitting the motorway but its easy to get lost - I know from bitter experience.
MuteWitness 29-09-2005, 15:37 on saturday some one pulled out of the ladybower inn on saturday in a car infront of a bike, bike hit it and got thrown under a 4 wheel drive in the car park.

MuteWitness 29-09-2005, 15:46 no heard it from the bar staff at ladybower
there was one on sunday thin khe highsided (not sure) was run over by a mini bus and is apparantly dead.
and monday one more dead in sheffield and 2 on manchester road from hudlesfield when a lorry decided to pull out of a cafe and turn to go the opposite way just after a blind bend both bikes his the lorry.
lalaland 29-09-2005, 15:54 Unfortunately this is quite common. While I don't claim bikers aren't to blame for their accidents, many of them are caused by other drivers not thinking or making that extra check :(
My only serious bike injury was when some ******** turned across the road to make a right turn right in front of me. We were on a straight road and it was very clear visibility etc. I was hospitalised for 2 months, 6 operations and took over a year to get back to 100% health. Luckily I only have a scar on my leg to show from it today, but it could have been worse.
I try to ride safely all the time, but please rememer when making turns, stops or anything pretty much to consider if there's a bike on the road around you.:)

Don't send em through Bamford Tom lad - we get enough bloody traffic speeding through the village as it is!!!

Yes you're quite right. Sorry I got so upset - was just angry that the very same day as this accident I'd been overtaken by six bike doing three figure speeds on a blind crest. But there are enough idiot car drivers out there too who think the Snake is their own personal race track!
Plain Talker 30-09-2005, 09:17 tgi,
Isn't Winnat's Pass closed at the moment, for essential resurfacing work? (or at least the next few weeks?)
I could be wrong, I stand to be corrected if so...?

PT We have someone that comes to Sheffield from Stockport everyday and he says it's now open again.
He also said that while the signs were up stating it's shut, he drove through it anyway and couldn't see any work going ahead and it was fully passable.
Anyway, it appears to be open officially again.
Plain Talker 30-09-2005, 09:28 thanks for that information. :D

Aye - good point. Maybe they should stick with the Woodhead instead!
