Can anyone recommend a good mp player. I'm tempted by the ipod shuffle. It can hold up to 120 tracks and costs £53.50

I'd like to know if its possible to transfer vinyl onto one...any ideas?

I have an ipod mini and a shuffle.

The thing about the shuffle is that it is flash memory and does not have a hard drive so if you use it for sport ie jogging as I do then it will not skip however it does not have a lcd screen.

You may want to take a look at the new nano which is the most sleek looking ipod I have everv seen but it is about 140.

Not sure about vinyl transfer but you can easily copy your
own cd's onto itunes and then your ipod

Vinyl to PC = Easy

Two ways that I use are:

1/ Get a phono pre amp from somewhere like Maplins (about £30) and use the output from the preamp to the audio in on your soundcard..Use which ever software you prefer on the pc.

2/ This way is cheating a bit but it works, make a lead that is 3/8th jack to 1/8th jack..that big headphone plug to small headphone plug..again..Maplin do all these bits. Then be carefull as you dont want the volume too high on your HiFi So plug the big plug into your HiFi and the small one in your audio in on your sound card and convert/record to mp3 or whatever you want.

The first way is better but it all depends how much spare cash you have.

Some people think that you blow your sound card with the second way but its not the case. Just dont go over the top with the volume or it will sound terrible. The other thing to remember is there is no need at all to encode an mp3 at 320k to use on a portable mini player..you wont hear the benefits but you will waste valuable space on the memory card.. between 128k and 192k should be fine.

If you decide to go all out and fully restore vinyl you can get software that gets rid of crackle, scratch sounds etc, they are very good but usually come at a price so my advice is to search for the free/cheap ones first and stick with those if they do what you want.

Personally I use Music Match on my desk top Pc and drag and copy on my powerbook.

After installing you driver the ipod comes up as a external hard drive so you can chuck tunes on there whatever way.
