Hi Patty, welcome to the Forum, your life will never be the same again.

I think you will find quite a lot of Scottish exiles in and around Sheffield, we even have a woman who lives in Lossie that posts on here.:)

My hubbys from Scotland (scottishdude on here) he was born in forfar, but spent most of his life in Edinburgh, but he's been in sheffield about 9 or 10 years, he's starting to lose his accent, but it soon comes back when he speaks to anybody from up north.
I hope you like it here in Sheffield, we are a friendly lot (most of us anyway)
Scotland's a very adictive place though, If I don't go up at least once a year I get withdrawl symptoms, Lucky that my sister in law still lives up there, I get free holidays!!!

I'm from Dundee (not far from Forfar) - although I've lived in South Yorks for 35 years. We have no plans to go back and live there, but love visiting at least once a year. Edinburgh is one of my favourite places - very Scottish, but cosmopolitan at the same time.

Asking if there are any Scots living in Sheffield is like asking if the Pope is a Catholic. I always think that the Celtic nations tend to move about more than the English ever do. In some cases there seem to be more Celts generally than the country of their roots could support. There is an old saying that if all the Irish went back to Ireland the place would just sink.

Awww - I hate to see the Picts and Norse peoples excluded. Scotland's not just made up of the Celtic Scots! :P :)

I believe so. Also, I think the indigenous Irish population originally came from Scotland? :suspect:

*puts hand up*

I'm from a place called *Gorebridge*, about 11 miles outside Edinburgh :) Moved to London in 98, then to Sheffield last year. I love it here, it's close enough to *home* but not TOO close ;)

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I love living in Sheffield - close enough to visit Edinburgh when I feel like it, far away enough the rest of the time!

I am originall from Dundee, and moved when I was 5 to a small town called Kinross, by Loch Leven, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned before she was sent to Sheffield. We moved here over forty years ago, I haven't been back for about 25 years, but don't really have many family left up in Scotland.. I love it here and wouldn't want to move back. You never really lose your accent, I don't really hear mine anymore, but amazingly lots of people ask me if I am from Scotland, so it must still be there. So enjoy your life in Sheffield, it is a great place.

Any Scots in Sheffield ? Cor , I should think so ------millions of 'em .
Playing those bagpipe things , day and night , reekin' the place out with Haggis and the men walkin' around in them skirt things with their sporrans sticking out all over . Show offs , that's all THEY are .
They might have taken over the Government but that's no reason for 'em to take over Sheffield . We've got enough immigrants as it is ------what with all them Welsh milkmen and singers and Irish builders .
O. K. , the Scots may be more intelligent than we are and tougher and have a better sense of humour and they might be less prissy and snobbish than us but we 'ave our good points too, if I could think of some .
That Hadrian geezer had the right idea . They ought to rebuild that wall properly and charge them Scots coming South and give the money towards a Free-Beer festival , every week , in Sheffield .
We need some culture an 'all you know .

Where abouts you from scotia?

I moved down to this city must have been about 7 years ago. Never had any trouble and the night life is cool.

I also lived in the fine district of ayrshire (where the boat leaves to go to Arran) but I am in no rush to move back.

I lived just outside Edinburgh until the mid 80s when I moved here. Have lost the accent now.

I didn't realise you were a fellow Scot, Classic Rock? Sounds like we're taking over the Forum, never mind Sheffield itself!

Whereabouts are you from?

StarSparkle - a Morningside girl, for my sins! :)

I grew up in Cumbernauld - but I've lived in England for a looong time now so the only hints to my true roots are in my pronunciation of certain words. I lived in Slough for about 10 years but still didn't pick up the improper Southern pronunciation of 'grass'. :D

i have a brother who lives in Irvine...just along the coast from your old hometown

we cant remember the name of the Hotel we went to for a Supper dance in your hometown, it was years ago
it was £2 each to get in at the time

there was my brother his wife, hubby and i,the band, the food and no-one else.
it was meant to start at 8:30pm

the band wouldn't start up.
The manager finall came and asked if we wanted our money back, which we took gladly.
then we said, can we have £1 back and take some of the Buffet
he said "Take it all"

there we were walking along the front offering sausage rolls, sandwiches to all that passed
the laughs we got as they were on those large oval silver salver type plates
some lads even Paid us for them
fond memories indeed
But we never went back to Ardrossan again

I was in Lossie (presume we are talking about Lossiemouth by Elgin here?) last weekend as Ms Lalaland is from there and we went up to visit her folkes. It's a tiny place, but I like it.
