Spray them with something that smells of citrus, or cover them with silver foil - most cats hate both of these.

We used to keep the chairs tilted against the table when not in use - they don't like sitting on a slope either.

You can get cat-repellent sprays but I think they're often very strong...

You also need to get used to the idea that cats operate in 3 dimensions, and like being raised above floor level. It's unrealistic to expect her to stay on the floor so pick your battles carefully and choose where she will be allowed onto raised surfaces. You won't be able to keep her on the floor. I once had a kitten who could jump onto overhead cupboards in the kitchen without touching any other surface above the floor- I had no chance of stopping him, no matter what I did. It would have been daft to try.

I can't remember the source of this saying, but it's very true.

'Dogs you can train not to do something, cats you can only train not to do it while you're looking.'

Your kitten's a baby who has no manners yet, so when she does anything you don't like (climbing, chewing your fingers too hard etc etc) get her used to the words 'no' and 'down' which are said with her name and caringly, as one would tell a child. Be prepared to do this for at least a few months- it will take her that long to learn your rules.

As well as tilting the chairs, you could try leaving things on the chairs so she can't fit on top, but as for deterrent sprays they don't work very well, if they work they must be nasty for the kitten to have to be in the same room, and the money spent on buying them could be spent on toys that stop your kitten getting bored and destructive.

BTW orange based deterrents don't work with cats that like oranges (and I have one of those) and the old trick of painting wires with Tabasco to stop kittens chewing them occasionally produces a kitten addicted to curries (and I had one of those too!). For cables the stuff used to stop people biting their nails works much better.

I wish you good luck and a lovely long life together with her. Do remember to keep the rest of us amused by posting about hr though, won't you.

I agree with the last poster.

Another reason kitten prefer the higher ground is to be safer and out of draughts.

Why not buy a cat tree for your cat, a piece of furniture for your kitten to sleep on and scratch :)

I love their trees....

Try using pepper its cheaper than the repellents you get in the shops and also invest in a water pistol for when it starts clawing your carpet, walls, curtains,Sette corners well anything fabric it will tear your house apart  It will soon learn to stop after a few shots of water.

Hi, did you never learn that rhyme in school ...

Cats sleep anywhere, any table, any chair
Top of piano, window ledge, in the middle on the edge
Anywhere, they don't care, cats sleep anywhere

I rest my case!

Try finding something soft that your kitten likes snuggling into, then leave it on the areas you are happy for her to sit on so she gets used to the 'approved zones' that way rather than trying to show her the 'unnaproved' ones.
