My boyfriend has got a HP officejet G55 all in one printer and it has run out of coloured ink - however it will not let him print in black even though that is a brand new cartridge - he rarely uses colour and doesnt really want to fork out the £25 for a new cartridge just so he can use the printer for bog standard black and white printing...

The error message is just "check colour catridge" and won't print, scan or photocopy anything...

Any ideas? Can you get a dummy cartridge at all?

Thanks!

you could try giving the colour cartridge a clean and then reinserting it

failing that, it may need the colour cartridge installed, best option is to go somewhere like cartridge world and get it filled up there, should be less than £25

If it is more, you can buy DIY refill kits which I think are quite cheap too

Hope that helps

when stating the printing preferences on your document to be printed state 'print in black and white' if it has that option(it should do)...i had to do that just today as my colour print cartridge is running low
hope that helps

I can't be 100% on HP's as I don't use them myself but I would guess that you're stuck until you buy a new cartridge.

However don't assume you're stuck with HP's own brand..

You can do a little searching and you should be able to find that somewhere online does generic cartridges that you could use.

Advantage in Selby, North Yorks do mail order so they might be worth a look...

but basically I'm pretty sure it won't let you print unless every ink levels is at least at minimums...

What usually happens with HP printers is that IF you do not remove the run out cartridge out then you can still use the printer (just without that run out ink) IF you remove the cartridge, you're well ... screwed, the printer will not print, even with the remaining cartridge.
