I have recently re installed windows in my pc and also all other programs. the trouble is a large amount of the programs seemed to have pinned them self to start up when I first turn my PC on, I spend the first 5 mins shutting them all down.
I'm sure I have got rid of this problem before, but being older and having children I seem to have lost some of my brain cells and can't for the life of me remember how to do it!
I have tried to fudge my way through this for the last three nights now.
Can any one tell me how................Please

First place to check is START..PROGRAMS..STARTUP
Then run MSCONFIG and click the STARTUP tab. This isn't as easy to 'prune' as the one above. There may be some odd looking names which could be controllers for your graphics card, or antivirus programs.
If in doubt, do a Google search for the name.
Finally, look at www.tweakxp.com for tips in speeding up.

If you download something like 'Spybot - Search and Destroy', then you can stop unwanted programs starting up :)
Do the msconfig thing mentioned above but remove everything except your antivirus software and firewall software from the list. Reboot and check that everything is working fine. If something isn't starting that you need, go back to msconfig and re-check it.
Sometimes it can take a bit of checking>rebooting>unchecking>rebooting etc etc....
Now go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. On the left you will see 'Add/Remove Windows Components'. Click on this and scroll down to Windows Messenger. Uncheck it and select OK.
This should stop Windows Messenger, one of the easiest ways of gaining access to your computer and the biggest popup problem I've ever known
