Hey,
A friend of mine has XP and is finding that just after it POSTs, the XP screen appears, the green squares green squares going back and forth and then it's not moving onwards... ...I thought that a jumper may have come out of place, but surely it would screw up when it is detecting the boot order of the drives etc, as opposed to this late in the game...
Any ideas?
Cheers
He could try booting to the boot menu by tapping f8 repeatedly while starting the computer. From the boot screen he can choose either Safe Mode or the one i would try first, 'Last Known Good Configuration'
Hope this helps :)

Yup try what Vidster said about F8. If that doesn't work then try removing any peripherals and boot up i.e. just leave monitor and keyboard in and boot. Had it in the past where printers etc. have stopped it booting.

Cheers, we've tried Safe Mode-ing it, and LKG - it kept happening on odd occasions and stuff, but now it happens continually - I may have to suggest he gets the XP CD and reformats - but as he only has one drive, I'll have to get that one to be a slave on mine do the work comes off...
If you manage to get it boot in any mode you can run sfc /scannow from the Run box and/or perform a system restore.
Did you try Safe Mode With Command Prompt?
OK..here's my thoughts for what it's worth
is most pryobably a device/driver error.. If I were you I'd try the following:
1) ask your friend the last device he/she installed or updated and remove or rollback the driver if possible
2) Boot to safe mode and check the event log and see if that gives any clues
3) try running msconfig in safe mode and disable all but the microsoft services
I don't think it will need formatting, sounds fixeable to me

A format would be the last thing you would attempt kentboy119.
If all else fails, try performing a Repair Install (http://dhost.info/vidster/HTML/repair_install.htm). Remember...... It's the second repair option

I'll get him to follow m3ckon's and Vidster's advice.
