Can somebody please tell me what msn is and what its used for exactly. It seems to be a really popular question for people to say 'do you have msn?'.

Normally, when people ask whether you're on msn, they're asking whether you're on MSN Messenger, which is a program that allows you to type messages in 'real time' to any other person on MSN.

You use your MSN Messenger program to communicate with someone else's program, and then whatever you type in will appear on the other person's screen, and vice-versa.

It will also allow you to communicate via Webcams with each other, or exchange files. People also call 'talking' through MSN 'chatting'.

It's an instant messaging application - you type something, press enter and it appears on other persons screen - there's a fair few around - AIM, Yahoo Pager, Google Talk, ICQ etc. MSN is Microsofts version and is probably the most popular??
