Hi
I'm thinking about buying our council house as it has just been modernised and am wanting to get on the property ladder.
Can anyone tell me whether the prices of council houses as also gone up at the same rate as private owned houses over the last couple of years and has anyone had experience lately of having their house valued by the council or even bought it and and can tell how much you've got it for.
If you can, what area are you in and what type of house is it? ie. how many bedrooms and terraced/semi etc.

I lived in a 3 bedroom council flat on Stradbroke Road, they offered it to me for about £14K (it had just had new double glazing fitted).
The amount the council charge depends on how long you have been a council tennant.

I bet that was a while ago though wasent it!!!
14k, I'd snap their hand off if I was offered it at that. Been in council houses just over 3 years, this is the 2nd one we've had. Continuous though so I think the full 3 years should count if we get a discount.

That was about 5 years ago, but I had been a council tennant for about 10 years and only got into that flat because I lived in a block on Norfolk Park which they blew-up (which gave me loads of "points")

TBH, a house is a house, who cares if it a council house or not, if you like it buy it.

Right then....
The house will be valued at market value, then you will be given a discount for the number of years you have been in it.
If you have a problem with the councils valuation, you can ask the district valuer to get involved and independently value the property.
good luck!

No so any more I'm affraid. The maximum discount (no matter how many years you have lived there) is £24,0000
I know this because my parents have just bought one.
It used to be a percentage based on the amount of years you have occupied council propertys, with a maximum discount of a whopping sixty percent.
In most other places this still applies, but Sheffield council got greedy!!
