Hi all, I have a new mum and her three babies that were born on Sunday night. One of the babies has started to lose weight and is suddenly noticeably smaller than his brothers. He just isn't latching on to his mum at all, and is becoming less responsive.

I wondered if anyone has any lactol I can pick up tonight.

I tried calling Peak vets at Abbeydale as I thought it was open all night, but apparently not. I'm in Hillsborough. Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for your quick responses everyone. I've been and fetched some from Binga - thank you Binga!!

The little guy is reluctant to drink so i'm squirting bits in his mouth. He has got a little bit more energetic and is hunting for nipples on his mum, but when he finds one he doesn't even put it in his mouth, he just goes to sleep!

I'll stay up through the night and keep trying it, and will let you know how he gets on. I'm praying he doesn't give up as I have been fostering for years and this is the first time I've had any real problems. I'll be a sobbing mess by tomorrow,

No probs hun and I hope all goes well. The Royal Canin stuff is far better than Lactol so lets hope it does the trick. Also it wont hurt the dam to have some aswell.....keep me posted chick. xx

Well I just had a partial success - I tried a different size teat on the bottle and he started lapping. He drank for a couple of minutes, and that's more than I could have hoped for an hour ago! He's asleep now with his mum, so I'll try again in an hour.

Thanks for your help everyone, night night x

Just an update - unfortunately he died about 7.30 this morning. He took some milk during the night but when I tried at 6.30 he couldn't even swallow, the milk was just running out of his mouth. He was totally unresponsive, so I wrapped him in a blanket and cuddled him until he went.

I'm a total blubbering mess at the moment, but at least I feel as though I tried my best for him, poor little thing.

Thanks so much Binga for your words of advice last night - I think I needed someone to be realistic about his chances so that I could prepare myself!

Poor little one, sometimes this happens and can't be prevented. Don't beat yourself up about it you did do your very best to help this kit. Try not to feel sad and I hope the other two kittens are doing well.

Awwwww.

It's just nature taking it's course. It's horrible to see but that's life unfortunately :(

Atleast you know you tried your best for him and you could do no more.

I hope mummy and the other kits are ok.

R.I.P little one xxx

Oh bless - nite nite little one - at least you were cuddled whilst you were here and someone loved you.
Thanks for nursing the little ones and the mum - and hopefully from now on - the rest will just grow. Will you be ok to get the mum done when she's ready.

Thanks all.

RR she will be sorted - these are foster cats from the RSPCA so they will neuter/spay them all once the kits are weaned.

I've spoken to the RSPCA and they have said similar things to the above - some babies just die for no reason. It's still hard not to keep thinking what-ifs though!

Oh so sad for you hun, RIP little one. You did all you possibly could for the little mite and it will have gone knowing it was cared for and loved.

What a shame about the little one....you really did try your best but when you said what weight he had lost I knew that it was unlikely he would make it. These poor cats and kittens might not have the best start in life but its people like you that make all the difference and you shouldn`t beat yourself up. I`m so glad that I could help in a tiny way and the way you came racing up to mine last night knowing that he had a slight chance and prepared to try and feed every hour is dedication at its best. There should be more people like you!!!! xxx

Bless you Joey for trying, there must have been a reason that he could not hang on to life and it was probably better for him in the long term, it must have been so upsetting for you xx
R.I.P now little one x

Thanks for the kind words. I've not been on the forum for a couple of months and you've all reminded me why I used to love it here so much. Mum and remaining kits are really well and will be getting extra cuddles, as will my own cats!!
