View Full Version : Cat Owners - is you Puss a Good Mouser? slimsid2000 22-09-2005, 13:04 Is your cat a good mouser? How many mice does it catch in a typical week? beansfeast 22-09-2005, 13:22 Well I've asked my 2 cats this and they both said they're too ill, hungry and badly treated to catch any mice. In fact, apparently the mice jump up and down outside the window laughing at them! They said they might be able to start catching mice if I fed them lots more, didn't go to work and instead stayed in to stroke them when they wanted. Oh, and they told me not to forget that if I also started sleeping on the floor and didn't disturb them on the bed at night, it would improve their mice catching karma too! Owls 22-09-2005, 13:33 My older cat prefers birds, we have had the odd mouse but with the birds she can bring me up to 3 a week. My youngest is only 10 months old and prefers to stay in so I dont get anything from her, although when my eldest leaves birds on the door step my youngest usually brings them in the house. A.B.Yaffle 22-09-2005, 13:34 Our cat prefers moths and spiders. medusa 22-09-2005, 13:57 All of mine at the moment catch small things (spiders wasps- ouch!!- socks etc) but I used to have a cat who I didn't adopt until he was 13. He turned out to be a master hunter- right up until the week before he died at 15. I don't normally let my cats out ovenight but he just wouldn't come in,and if he was out overnight he would usually reach double figures of small furry and feathery things lined up on doorstep for me to eat (yeuch!). His catch would have provided a good analysis of the small wildlife population of our area, if I'd wanted to study something like that. Mice, rats, shrews, voles, bats and birds were his usual catch, and he brought it in for me rather than eating any of it. Apparently my neighbours had to carry their children past my doorstep with their eyes closed on their way to school to prevent nightmares about disembowelled animals. On the other hand, some of mine have shown no interest whatsoever, even in butterfies and spiders that are slow enough to catch. viking 22-09-2005, 14:03 LOOK (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/viking99/forums/drunkcat.jpg) at my cat. He could'nt catch a chuffin cold. emperor_ming 22-09-2005, 14:17 I dont have a cat myself, but usually a couple of times a week i pass a neighbours cat on the way to the bus stop. Its always sat in the same place with a dead mouse at its feet, looking quite proud of itself. It must of had at least 20 mice since i've lived here, plus its pure white so can hardly rely on being camouflaged! pete_jim 22-09-2005, 14:28 Ours brings a couple of offerings a month on average, when she can get her lazy a***e out from under the duvet that is. ickle 22-09-2005, 14:58 My parents cat gets anything that moves! They've had frogs, mice, birds including a pigeon! He even scared off a fox that used to wander round the garden. Never seen it since. slimsid2000 22-09-2005, 15:04 Look at this (http://www.cdaccess.com/jpg/shared/front/large/eatcatmp.jpg) loue 22-09-2005, 15:44 I've had my cat(Keef) for four years now, and I've always wanted him to be a good mouser, but resigned myslef to the fact that he just could not be bothered. The other day I saw him, in a neighbours garden, catch a mouse and wander off with it in his mouth, and thought I bet he's bringing that for me (his mum) no such look, did not see him for another day. I was gutted. The only thing he ever brought me was a spider, its legs were hanging out of his mouth, it was awful, as I am scared of spiders. teebee 22-09-2005, 18:28 out of my two cats Moochie is a mouser, in fact he brought three home yesterday, as i was at work my hubby had to deal with them, apparently he spent 20 minutes chasing moochie round the kitchen table trying to get him to drop one mouse out of his mouth, minnie on the other had is not too bothered about mice, no she likes birds, the bigger the better as far as she is concerned, one morning as i was leaving for work, i heard such a commotion on the street, minnie was chasing a crow up the street, and it was about three times the size of what she is. alchresearch 23-09-2005, 12:22 Mine are mostly moth-ers. Although one once came home with a dirty great magpie in his mouth. He struggled to carry it! bobsyouruncle 26-09-2005, 11:49 our cat is just plain crazy! Never seen her with a mouse, but she has brought frogs home on a couple of occasions, heaven only knows where she gets them from, must be the pond in the park!! also she loves to bring leaves and sweet wrappers in, but thats about it!! Lotti 26-09-2005, 11:57 Smith is a fantastic mouser! She kills 'em and eats 'em. But then she leaves body bits around... My mum picked up a piece of 'pot pourri' one day, as she went to sniff it she made eye contact with a mouse missing a body :gag: I've also found skinned mice from Smitch. but Smudge - NO CHANCE! She's pants! She catches them and then doesn't know what to do with them so she brings them up to my room to play with (Still alive) and then loses them in my bedroom. I then spend hours chasing bloody field mice and a couple of times, birds around my room. Birds are easier, you open your window, make sure to cover up the bit that doesn't open so they don't fly into it and kick the cat out, get on with something and a while later you see a little birdie fly out the window! Mice, they get everywhere and you have to try and get them without squashing them (as my dad did last time). Smudge doesn't bring them regularly but when she gets on a spree, that's it! We can have up to 3 a day. Nice. G_SuperBikes 26-09-2005, 12:28 We've two cats - twin sisters - four years old. The first, Suzi, is a real softie. The other, Tiger, is a 'fighter' in the cat-world, but actually softer than Suzi around humans. Well we thought they both couldn't catch ANYTHING. But, Suzi got run over last year by a car and she was in such a bad way (cost £500 for the operation to mend her) that when we brought her home from the vets she was helpless and couldn't do much. Tiger took it upon herself to bring Suzi dead mince. 7 on the doorstep one morning! Then birds, then frogs. Bless... as soon as SUzi was better, the mice et al stepped. Tiger has now taken to stalking anything she can, but she's nowhere near as effective - maybe the local wildlife have 'wised up' to her? God love cats. Craig7777 26-09-2005, 15:09 My cat caught a chav once even ate him too still had a bit of his burberry cap in his teeth Sal22 26-09-2005, 19:52 My cat is 15 and has no teeth so isn't very effective as a hunter. In the time we have had her (about 4 months) she has only managed to catch 1 bird and she couldn't kill it just made it soggy. Howver she is an expert at pretending she hasn't been fed and waking me up in order to feed her. :help: medusa 26-09-2005, 23:38 We had a letter in to the Shelter recently (I edit the newsletter so it ended up with me) telling us all about the exploits of a Shelter kitten, whise favourite prey is a species of car washing sponge. In a couple of months he apparently brought in 20 of the things, all obviously stolen from neighbours' sheds and garages. I bet they put up a serious struggle. |
