I've done two hats recently, that I'd like to give away to charity. I could drop them off at a Charity Shop I suppose, but the thought of them being stuffed under a shelf somewhere, makes it all a little sad :( I made them with the intention of donating them specifically to someone who would appreciate them and wear them, you know, like knitting premature baby clothes for hospitals. Who would want my hats though? Who am I to say they're good enough to wear? I don't want to upset anyone or myself by offering a hat that just isn't wanted :help: I've looked on line at Charity Knitting, but there just isn't one that says "We want Wheezy to knit us hats and lots of them, no matter how bad they look" Does anyone have any ideas

Hi Wheezy. The Mission to Seafarers take donated hats to give to sailors (I remembered seeing an article in an old Simply Knitting - I wouldn't inflct my knitting on the poor people!).

What a kind gesture, a lot of effort must have gone into it so I agree with not giving them to a charity shop

You could give them to homeless people, they would be grateful of clothes to keep them warm no matter what they look like, I'm sure your hats are fine, why don't you post a photo so we can see them to

Thanks Krissyc, I saw that too. Considering it as an option. Not sure how up to date it is though, and if they still want hats. May look into it. :D

Wheezy, I bet the Cathedral Breakfast-Archer Project, at the Sheffield Anglican cathedral would be grateful of them, to distribute to the homeless people who use the service.

The Seafarers thing is an ongoing project. Another one that is always looking for hats is Operation Christmas Child, more commonly known as the shoebox appeal.

Thought of the shoebox appeal too, but that's a bit like giving to the charity shop. I knitted with the intention of wanting to know roughly/vaguely who it was going to. So, if I sent them to the Cathedral, I think I may have done a bit of good for the local area or the Seafarers, it asking for hats specifically, makes me think they'll be most welcome. I agree the shoebox appeal is a good cause and we have donated them before, but I want to be more specific with these donations. Does that make sense? :suspect:

A couple of years ago I gave kilos of hats away to the British and International Sailor's Society but there's nothing on their website now to indicate that they are still taking them. Closer to Christmas there are usually boxes at Crystal Peaks for donations for the homeless and that would be another option. Failing that tuck them away in a drawer somewhere, you never know when you might need a present at short notice.

Kilos of hats? Is that the collective term for lots of hats then?:hihi:

Good idea W4B I will just continue to knit them as a stop gap to other things then they're always there to be had when the time is right.

A good idea. It's pretty warm at the moment though isn't it? What about HARC who do the Christmas meals service for the homeless, I met some people recently involved, and they are magnificent. If they like to give gifts, (which I think they do) along with the meals and christmas entertainment they provide, I think your hats would be brilliant there.
