In my hospital ante-natal group 2 of the mums-to-be already had names for their luckless offspring - Savannah and Toyota. I've also kept a clipping from the Star from a couple of years ago (yes, I know this means I am a sad person) as it featured sisters with the names Porsche and Carrera - class!

Porsche and Mercedes are old names .
In a Shakespere play can`t remember which one though.
I am sure someone else will :D
Would rather have a surname ,compared to one of those stupid made up names that certain members of parenthood choose for their little darlings:loopy:

my sons name joseph must be one of the oldest christian names, yet this also is a surname,so perhaps it works both ways.

I personally prefer short, old, cute names myself but I think it's great that parents dream up new names too. Keeps things interesting.

I always wished that I'd been given a more exotic, unusual name. It may sound daft but I somehow think it may have inspired me to greater things somehow?

That would be Portia, from the Merchant of Venice.

Mercedes is an old spanish name.

Nordic names have a certain resonance with me.

My neices are called Faime and Kalyca (kaleeka) and my nephews Remi and Neo... The boys are a bit young to realise their names are a bit unusual but the girls love their names... they are both all singing and dancing kids though... a simple name wouldn't live up to their antics!

My little lad is sooooo lucky

You see Im a sad Inspector Morse fan. The book in which we finaly found out his christian name was brought out after he was born, or else he would have been called Endevour.

My ex wanted, as a girls name Lauren. Again lucky escape as my surname is Hardy. (this is 100% true, and it took her a week to work out the significance)

I once worked with a woman who gave her three girls really odd sounding names, each of which began with the letter Q. When she had a boy, she just called him Donald.

I was aware of parents who called their seventh child Tia Maria.

My friends have called their two boys (now aged 5 & 3) Cody and Lucas.

Loved the account by hj dary of how his ex almost called her girl Lauren Hardy :hihi: Reminds me of my school days when I knew a Robin Wood :heyhey:

I used to share a house with a lad whose sister had a lovely little girl called Emma. The problem was that she hadn't considered that she had married a bloke with the surname Roydes. Not an urban myth- I just don't think they'd thank me for naming them fully.

I'm named after an Australian tennis player, and would have been called the same name if I was a boy or a girl.

In the Peace Gardens recently I heard a young mother shouting for her son - "Come 'ere our Tinsley!"

A few minutes later it transpired that Tinsley had a sister - "Diamond"

It sounds stupid but its true.

Not long before he was born she was sitting thinking of names for a girl just incase and thats what she came up with.

One of our friends added,"have you thought of a middle name......what about Anne"

She still didnt get it. Then after about a week she was watching TV one night and just fell about laughing. The penny had dropped and that was the end of the name Lauren.

Mind you it was a good thing for more than one reason. He's now eleven almost as tall as me, and Im 6'3 and hes built like a brick outhouse.

It'd be a bit daft having a bloke looking like that and called Lauren.

... i know two sisters called porsche and carrera, they also have a brother called buick.. their surname is also that of a car... random!

i was thinking about names the other day, by the time my daughter is in school it will be unusual to have a 'normal' name.. wish i had thought of that earlier now!

At least he wasn't called Robin Banks! :o

Parents today - I don't know  - I regard some of these names as being not far from deliberate child cruelty :o

PS Now Portia is a lovely name - but any poor child called it today would be constantly having to say 'Not Porsche - Portia' :gag:

I've told this tale on here before but its worth repeating.
Its not about kids names but....well you'll see..

A customer of mine who works at a school in Rotherham, once had a small child in her office who was feeling unwell and she had to find the childs contact details.

On the form they had the mothers name and number, but she wasn't answering her phone.

Under the section marked second contact was a work phone number for the childs dad but no other name.

The child was asked "what do you call your daddy?"

With a incredulous look she replied "daddy of course"

"No love whats his first name?"

"daddy"

A change in plan was needed!

"What does your mummy call him though?"

The child replied..."Fruity"
